  • Many young Afghans suffering mental illness from non stop war

Afghan soldiers have shot and killed at least 135 of the American servicemen who were training them over the past five years, including three more on Saturday.
But the United States Agency for International Development interviewed large numbers of Afghan young people last year and found them generally to be “disenfranchised, unskilled, uneducated, neglected.” These people, it adds, “are most susceptible to joining the insurgency.”

Actually, however, multiple medical studies over the past nine years indicate that these disaffected young people are less likely to volunteer for the insurgency than they are to join the tens of millions of Afghans who suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder, clinical depression, perpetual deep anxiety and other debilitating trauma-related mental illnesses that are rife in the country. And these mental illnesses can lead to irrational, violent acts — like killing your trainers.
By some measures Afghans may be the most traumatized people in the world — a development that is thoroughly undercutting the strategies the United States and its allies are using in Afghanistan, even as Western forces are leaving. But to this day, the American military and policymaking community does not seem even to be aware of the problem, and so they’re doing little, if anything, to compensate for it.
Afghans have been at war nearly nonstop for almost 35 years, since the Soviet invasion in 1979. One result of that: The country stands at the very top of the Political Terror Scale, meaning “terror has expanded to the whole population,” the State Department and Amnesty International said in their most recent, joint terror-scale report. And Afghanistan is three spaces shy of top placement on the State Fragility Index, published by the Center for Systemic Peace.
A Journal of the American Medical Association study of nations where wars or insurgencies are under way noted that PTSD results from “an ongoing threat of insecurity” and/or “political terror.” Numerous academic and professional studies note that it’s worse when warfare is ongoing. The studies call this “perpetual war.” That, of course, is Afghanistan.
“What has struck me many times is how few people there can actually remember a time of peace at all,” said Seth Jones, a Rand Corp. associate director who spent years working in Afghanistan for the Defense Department. “There’s a significant number of village leaders who have to deal with depression among village constituents.”
While stationed in Afghanistan, Air Force Col. Erik Goepner said he learned that these environmental factors can lead to severe mental illness — even though to this day, American servicemen receive no training on psychological issues before leaving for Afghanistan. But these mental factors help explain why the war has for so long seemed to be faring so poorly.
“As an American military commander, you want to win,” Goepner noted in an interview. To him, it was clear that even after a decade of warfare, there was to be no “decisive win. And so you look back and ask: Why isn’t it going the way I want it to?”
In part to help find the answer, Goepner began working “with a lot of Afghans” and came away with “the idea that something was going on in the mental head space.”
Psychology was certainly not among his areas of expertise, but over time, he read a number of psychology studies and learned that more than half of Afghans suffer from clinical PTSD. And in some studies, the number afflicted with severe anxiety and clinical depression exceeded 70 percent.
That shouldn’t be surprising given the large number of American soldiers who come home with PTSD after serving there for a year or less. Some experts have likened the 132 so-called green on blue killings to the road rage that some PTSD-stricken American soldiers exhibit, though Jones and others believe Taliban infiltrators are responsible for most of those attacks.
The American Psychiatric Association notes that PTSD and related depression are strongly correlated with situations “where the person experienced, witnessed or was confronted with an event where there was the threat of or actual death or serious injury.” That, too, is Afghanistan.
But American political and military leaders never talk about this as a part of the challenges they face in Afghanistan. In fact, said Paul Pillar, who was the CIA’s national intelligence officer for the Near East and South Asia for several years, “I do not have any recollection of that; I do not recall seeing any reports on that.”
Since it wasn’t on the Pentagon or CIA agenda — or that of most anyone else in government, for that matter — Goepner said he decided to begin researching it. Why does widespread mental illness undercut America’s goals? American counterinsurgency strategy positively demands that Western forces win the hearts and minds of the Afghan people.

I can remeber that a similar artical was posted here. But this is not really surprsing, 35 years of war had a real bad efect on peopel. I would be more surprised if Afghans weren't traumatised by all this blood.

It's time to look ahead and leave the mess that is Afghanistan behind. We live in new countries, new environments; we should embrace them and let Afghanistan just become a lost piece of history

So was natzi-germany, so was communist regimes under soviet unions rule, so was every nation in western world under monarchy.
Now tell me did any of their people abandon their homeland?
Did any of their people erased their identity?
If you look at their countries today, you wont even be able to imagine what they are gone through. Do you know how countries emerge to have a world scale influence? It by loving it country, and have pride and honor for what they are.
This is the problem in Pashtun people now days, they have no pride and honor. When they face a bit of difficulty, they are ready to delete their identity, they are ready to abandon their country, they are ready to abandon their people.
Do you think if Germany or any other country in western world, would be standing with us today with world scale influence, if they did what you are doing now?
It is an obligation for the people to defend its country. Today Afghanistan is facing hardship and it is every Pashtuns obligation to protect Afghanistan from harm and act for Afghanistan's best.

                  There is a famous saying
Don't ask what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

Are you gone mad? You act as if you are the only person who lived amongst afghans... I know you are stupid based on your comments you've made, but even someone in your level should have noticed, that this is a Pashtunforum. I am pretty sure every one of them have and still lives amongst afghans. Now that we have cleared this part, I will comment the rest of your useless post.

You obviously missed my point when I mention all these countries/regimes, but it isn't a surprise anymore, judging by your lack of intelligence. My point in mentioning those countries and regime was to tell you, that every nation will face a time hardship. And as long the people dont forget their identity and proudly identify themselves by it, the country will raise to greatness.

Pashtuns are a proud ethnicity with great and honorable history, and they will build their nation Afghanistan to greatness again.

Also when I said ''Pashtun people nowadays, they have no pride and honor. When they face a bit of difficulty, they are ready to delete their identity, they are ready to abandon their country, they are ready to abandon their people'' I wasn't referring to all Pashtuns, I was referring to people like you. Which you yourself had proven by this comment.

To be honest I dont even think you are Pashtun. You probably:
                      A) a farsiwan who try to defame Pashtuns
                      B) a punjabi who try to defame Pashtuns
                      C) a westerner who try to defame pashtuns

That being said, what are you even doing in Pashtunforum? You don't contribute with something relevant and certainly cant speak civilized. You don't like our ethnicity, then don't talk with us or about us.
Don't quote me or speak to me if you hate Afghanistan, you be ignored.

No I am acting as if everything you're saying is utter garbage. If you want to talk about going mad, Almost every aspect of Pashtun culture is pure idiotic insanity.

You're lying to yourself and live in denial and your only way to cope with your idiotic feelings of inferiority is by fabricating some self deception that everyone who speaks the truth is secretly a Punjabi , Farsiwan or Westerner. If anything is evidence of a lack of intelligence is people who use excuses like that.

That's just pathetic and only proves Pashtuns as a people ...regardless of inflated claims of glory are just simpletons and cowards who can't face themselves for who they are. NOTHING in Pashtun history has been honorable. except Mirwais Khan Hoiak, but he wasn't really Pashtun, but a descendant of Turks

What prove do you have to back up your statements. I even doubt what you are saying can even be classified as statements. All you do is insult a entire ethnicity and its culture and history.

It is more pathetic how you try to defame Pashtuns with nothing more then insults. At least if you going to talk badly about them, then at least back it up with historical evidence. The fact is there is nothing to insult about Pashtuns and that why you try to avoid facts and continue with baseless statements.

Apparently you have no knowledge about Pashtun and know nothing about their history. Just so you know Pashtuns have created many empires, and no Mirwais Hottak wasn't a Turky or turkish(whatever you call them), he was a pure Pashtun. I recommend that you start making research instead of defame an ethnicity based on your fiction stories. Once you know facts about Pashtun, then come back and talk.
