PTI may cut Nato supply line through Khyber

ISLAMABAD - The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf stated on Friday the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may cut NATO supply line passing through its jurisdiction.
“The party may cut NATO supply line passing through Khyber where it has formed government,” Dr Shireen Mazari, PTI secretary information, said, adding Imran Khan had been aiming to move an anti-drones resolution in Lower House of Parliament.
"We have already made it clear to other political groups that drone attacks inside Pakistani territory were unacceptable; we need to stop them," added Mazari, a formidable critic of US policies.
She said when “certain quarters told us that striking a drone down was beyond the mandate of the provincial government”, the PTI started considering any possibility of cutting NATO supply route through Khyber into Afghanistan.
Undoubtedly, this anti-drones approach of PTI may prove disastrous for the US and allied forces if the provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sticks to it.
Pakistan suspended Nato supply line in November 2011, angrily denouncing violation of its sovereignty after a drone strike on an army outpost killed at least 25 soldiers.
The suspension was not dropped until Obama administration made an unconditional apology to Pakistan in 2012.
Reports say the US had to incur losses of millions of dollars on air transportation of supplies to Nato forces stationed in Afghanistan.
Insiders told The Nation on Friday the Khyer Pakhtunkhwa government was seriously mulling a cut on NATO supply line if the US did not stop violating Pakistan’s sovereignty by firing drones into the Tribal Areas.
Sources added Imran Khan-led Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf was in the middle of drawing up a petition to move international human rights watchdogs against inhumane drone strikes that trampled human rights.

I doubt. If they would have been in the Federal Govt. Might be possible but here I don't think so.

Why is it not possible? if Imran can arrange a long March and gather people to sit on the road to Jamrud to halt NATO supply in the PPP-ANP led coalition government, what will prevent him and his party which is now in govt. too from doing that again?

His coalition partners in KPK government, the independent MPAs and QWP which form a sizeable chunk will be against this step. Second thing is they might be cutting a route through balochistan since it is a PML-N favoured government there.

All this talk of cutting NATO supply line is just media gossip, KPK relies on millions of dollars of US aid and foreign banks they cant just up and ignore that.

This is not accurate. The Pakistan Army received and receives billions of dollars in payment for the NATO supply lines and the drone attacks too (generally supporting the NATO war/intervention in Afghanistan). The permitting of NATO supply lines was and has been previously made by the Pakistan Army.

Secondly, this now is a provincial decision, and Pervaiz Khattak has said it will be a resolution voted on. The general consensus in KP is that NATO supply lines in KP has caused instability and it goes against the political ideology of PTI (which is in charge of KP).

This was bound to happen and should come as no suprise.

Shahi-Kotray (), that was just Imran Khan's political rhetoric. Don't get exited by unlikely prospect of any such thing.

PTI is leading the govt in KP and has pro-Taleban allies like JI, so I think it wouldn't find it difficult to block NATO supply at Khyber if it wants to. But the anti-NATO rhetoric was aimed at political mileage.

Thats the thing it might not be provincial jurisdiction, defence comes under federation and you forget that PMLN and JUI-F together have a big enough chunk in KPK assembly to make life difficult for Khan's PTI.

Don't think there will be any blocking of supplies especially when the whole damn reason for operations in Tirah maidan etc is to secure this supply route

Mr. Talal Khan, PML-N, JI, and JUI all are pro-Taleban so much so that they designated these parties as the guarantors for any peace dialogue with the govt. As for QWP, that is a small player and cannot afford to let go of its stakes in the provincial govt. Sherpao even cannot even utter a word against Taleban or say anything pro-NATO.

Kindly, don't just shoot your Goro Nanaki aqal from your hips like your bearded brethern across Wahga. Talk on the basis of some logic.

haha you do make me laugh I gotta write that one down.

But no in all seriousness I dont think they will stop the supply line, I'd be very surprised if they do. I was watching Khattak's interview and he said that whatever policy they come up with in federation essentially we'll support it if its benefit to KPK. So its all a bit vague and how can a provincial government take on the army when the federation cant ?
