  • Delivering on promises: PTI forms committee to assist provincial govt

PESHAWAR: The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) has formed a provincial coordination committee to facilitate the implementation of its election manifesto, The Express Tribune learnt on Saturday.

The committee will probe means to enable the implementation of plans developed to improve education, health, local government, planning and development, energy and power sectors.

The committee will be headed by PTI chief Imran Khan and will consist of handpicked members including Asad Umar, Jahangir Tarren, Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Javed Hashmi, Asad Qaiser, Pervaiz Khattak and Atif Khan.
It was further learnt former Higher Education Commission (HEC) Chairperson Attaur Rehman and PTI Senior Vice President Ishaq Khan Khakwani may also be included in the group.

“The committee is supposed to work as a liaison body. It will coordinate with the provincial government and administration, giving advice on various development plans to be executed according to the party’s manifesto,” said someone familiar with the matter.

The members will have more powers as compared to elected MPAs as far as planning and initiating developmental projects are concerned, he informed, adding the members would also play a key role in suggesting reforms in various provincial government departments.

When contacted, PTI Peshawar President Atif Khan, a member of the said committee, confirmed the formation of the body. Atif stated the committee had been constituted in order to fully ensure the implementation of PTI’s development plans for the province, as previously pledged to the people.

In response to a question, the district president said PTI’s decision making was not centric as suggestions from party members were always welcomed.

Earlier, Awami National Party Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P) President Afrasiab Khattak had criticised the PTI’s central leadership for its involvement in provincial matters, alleging important decisions regarding K-P would now be imposed from PTI’s leadership sitting in Punjab.

However, when contacted, K-P PTI Secretary Information Aqeel Razzaq said in response that people would judge the party by its performance as opposed to who made decisions when it went to the polls again in five years.

“PTI has competent people in every field, and it is our right to utilise their experience in the interest of the province,” Razzaq maintained.

He further added it was the party’s utmost priority to deliver what it pledged to the people. “We cannot take any risks. If the PTI fails to deliver in K-P, there will be no justification in asking people to vote for us in five years.”

Asad Umar is one of the best industrialist brains in Pakistan. Expect KPK to become self-sufficient in electricity production and a hub for gas and energy companies under his guidance.

Well theoretically, that would be a good thing. But what if they took away instead of giving something to KP? I really distrust people from Lahore-not very firm people.

You mean natural resources? they are already directed towards Punjab.
My cousin was thinking about opening marble business and sought information about it. He told me that 90 percent of marble in Pakistan is extracted from KPK while 80% of its factories are in Punjab. Same would be the case with other resources........

And lets go back to 2005 when karak gas was discovered, punjabis were quick in gettings hands on it but khattaks are not illiterate, Nazims demand gas royalty, warn of agitation -DAWN - National; 28 April 2005

KOHAT, April 27: Nazims of three districts have threatened to jointly launched an agitation if the royalty of gas discovered in Kohat and Karak was not provided to local governments and warned of dire consequences if the federal minister for petroleum and natural resources failed this time to formally announce provision of facility to the southern areas of the NWFP as promised.

The Nazims said at a press conference here on Wednesday that the Karak district government had given a deadline of April 28 for the supply of gas to the area but the date was extended after the federal minister for petroleum and natural resources assured them that their demand would be met by May 9.

The nazims of Kohat, Hangu and Karak regretted that gas reserves found in Gurguri were more than that of Sui and were enough to be exported to neighbouring countries after meeting the local demand but even areas in close proximity had been denied the facility.

They said that the government by constantly refusing to provide gas, especially to Karak and Hangu and southern districts, was doing a great injustice with the people of these areas, which would not be tolerated at any cost.

Malik Asad, Kohat district nazim, in his speech said that earlier Kohat was being provided gas from Jand in Attock district of the Punjab but now after the discovery of gas in Shakardarra the Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited through a strange arrangement started supplying gas to Punjab via the same pipeline through which Kohat was being fed.

He explained that 20 per cent of the gas from Shakardarra was being supplied to Kohat whereas 80 per cent was passed on to the Chanda oilfields, Jand, from where it was distributed to many parts of Punjab.

He said that the gas reservoirs discovered from Gurguri and Shakardarra were equivalent of the gas so far discovered in the whole country.

Giving details about the initial production from these two gas-producing sites out of a total of 13 where gas had been found, he said that from Shakardarra and Gurguri worth Rs10 million and Rs70 million gas respectively was being supplied to Punjab daily. This was in addition to production of thousands of barrels of oil daily. But it was unfortunate that the local people had been refused to benefit from the facility.

He vowed to resist the usurping of the rights of the local people by the federal government as it had done in Sui and go to any extent to get due share of the districts and the province.

The Karak nazim, Mohammad Sharif Khattak, said that they had been appealing to the federal government for the last one and a half years to provide gas from the local fields to their area first. But all requests had fallen on deaf ears.

He said that the management of private drilling companies had been constantly refusing to employ local skilled and non-skilled people in violation of the agreement reached with them early last year which had further enraged the people who could now go to any extent to get their rights.

He said that the SNGPL did not care for the orders of the chief executive of the province who during his recent visit had ordered that a complete survey be carried out for supplying gas to Karak and a job quota be fixed for the local people.

Mr Khattak said that the NWFP government had demanded Rs5 billion from the federal government for supplying gas to the six districts of the southern areas.

He said that the Punjab bureaucracy was trying to create a situation like 1971 by denying the smaller provinces their own share.

He expressed astonishment that the prime minister of the country was not aware of the huge discoveries made in the area and wondered as to how the people of the NWFP could expect the federal government sanctioning funds for the provision of facility.

The district nazim Hangu, Pir Haider Ali Shah, in his brief speech said that the people in his area and adjoining tribal areas used wood for cooking and heating purposes and if gas was provided to them then precious forests could be saved from further devastation.

I was listening to him on a show the other day and this is what he was proposing, he said that the topography of KPK is such that this land is most suitable for micro-hidel projects. These are turn-of-the-river energy generating projects that are very easy to implement and provide lots of jobs in remote areas. Second thing he said when he was with OGDCL in one year they took up the number of gas wells from 20 to 43 something. He said there is huge potential for direct foreign investment in gas exploration in KPK and he's the right man to work on it. Remember this is guy who in just two years turned ENGRO which was operating in net loss to one the most profitable industrial organizations in the country, in addition to diversifying its portfolio.

PTI currently has achieved 44 of the required 51 seats, so the coalition they form wont be on too many crutches. JI despite its right wing agenda is a clean party, there is absolutely no corruption there. Luffy you should give this party a chance I think they have a lot of potential.

do u kp pashtuns think that kp is better off today, current conditions and potential-wise, than say under the the mma some time back, despite the ttp threat?
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

MMA is the reason all this TTP BS is happening, there time saw the most right wing radicalization of pashtuns in the history of this province.

PTI will try very hard to perform best in KPK, to set it as an example of their achievements for other provinces....if it is benefiting my province then why i shouldnt appreciate it? Even though i am not a fan or voter of PTI but i admit that imran khan is not corrupt and greedy person, his project of cancer hospital in peshawer was appreciated by every one....he is naive and simple-minded on some other matters and that irritates me....

MMA was useless but i dont agree with talal that they are solely responsible for TTP and radicalization....u-turn on taliban in Afghanistan, military operations in FATA for American dollars and lal masjid incident sparked taliban phenomena in KPK and FATA...The mullah of our masjid is member of JUI-F and he has links with taliban, he recruits guys for them. Whenever they are in trouble e.g caught by police as talibans carrying weapons and explosives, they are rescued by ISI.....

From 13:15 Asad Umer starts talking about KPK a bit. This show was over all really good to get an idea of where the government is headed and what are the problems facing Pakistan's economy.
