Older, powerful men boosted their social status by keeping boys as sexual playthings and the practice was celebrated in song and dance, a military study claimed.

British officers in Helmand requested the study to help them understand the sexual behaviour of locals and Afghan comrades after young soldiers became uneasy they were being propositioned.

American social scientists employed to help troops understand the local culture reported that homosexual sex was widespread among the Pashtun ethnic group in southern Afghanistan.

Strict separation of men and women, coupled with poverty and the significant expense of getting married, contributed to young men turning to each other for sexual companionship.

"To dismiss the existence of this dynamic out of desire to avoid western discomfort is to risk failing to comprehend an essential social force underlying Pashtun culture," the report said.

The study, called 'Pashtun Sexuality', said that as well as willing sex between young men, "boys are appreciated for physical beauty and apprenticed to older men for their sexual initiation".

The practice of 'bache bazi' or boy play, is known throughout Afghanistan, but is particularly renowned in the city of Kandahar next to Helmand, where prepubescent boys are widely admired.

Western soldiers often report feeling unease at the attentions of their Afghan comrades, who are affectionate with each other and sometimes wear make-up.

British troops have also talked of their disgust at police or militias keeping young boys as hangers on.

Anna Maria Cardinalli, author of the report, said British officers requested the research in the summer of 2009 when she worked with them in Lashkar Gah.

She said: "They were having young men who were beginning to feel uncomfortable because they felt they were being approached." She said the study gave no advice about what action troops should take if they confronted paedophilia.

A spokesman for the Ministry of Defence said: “Afghanistan is a sovereign nation with its own law under which the sexual abuse of children is illegal.
“British forces working as part the wider [coalition] force continue to work with and assist the Afghan National Security Forces, including the Afghan National Army and Afghan Police, to ensure that the rule of law in Afghanistan is adhered to and upheld.”

    • parents are not as enthusiastic about the birth of their female child because someday she will get married and leave them?? do all men born to pashtun parents spend the rest of their lives with their parents?? because she moves out of their house at some point in her life, it's okay for them to prefer the male child over a female?? a good parent cares for his/her child regardless of how far away or close by they are to them physically. their love for their child doesn't increase or decrease depending on where they live.

That article has to be the most biased, disgusting and backward thing i have ever read about Pashtuns. It is written by a british newspaper and the Brits hate Pashtuns with a passion ever since the suffering defeat of the 3 Anglo wars at their hand. This is just to make Afghans look bad and make our culture look backward.

        • well there is documented evidence that this practice happens among pashtuns, now instead of trying to deny it and trying to sweep it under the rug for the sake of ghairat, we should be calling for the the execution of the enablers. its like the church and its gay pedo priest problem, the denial doesn't change the fact that the sickness persists and it only enables the problem.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

          • The word Bacha Bazi is a Dari one, first of all. Further, in that famous documentary about it which made it so well-known and which ironically served to further malign Pashtuns in the eyes of the world, everyone happens to be Tajik, Uzbek, and Dari zuban in the documentary and no one is Pashtun. Even in the video RevolutionThroughReason has posted, it is a group of Tajiks listening to Panjshiri Qataghani music. If you called the old Panjshiri man a spingeray mashar, LOL, then I don't think you're that familiar with Afghanistan. No offense to you.

I am not saying that there is no such thing as a thief, murderer, homosexual, or whatever else, among a population of 50 million Pashtuns. But in large part, it is very unfair to associate this practice with Pashtuns when it is not common and harshly looked down upon by the vast majority. If you hear any news coming from untrustworthy sources, it is a must to verify it first before spreading it. Have any of you visited Pashtun villages and seen the way people live? Those with some familiarity with the country and society other than gossip online would not be engaged in repeating these calumnies over and over.

At the very root of this propaganda are none other than the former Northern Alliance and people like Harun Amin who corresponded with NYT in an article soon after the invasion of Afghanistan accusing Pashtuns of what happens in their society instead. If that were not the case, they wouldn't be so limited of evidence that they have to use videos of Tajiks engaged in the custom in order to prove themselves. Lol..

That's just an excuse Kushan; the article refers to a study. Declaring a "bias" when the article is just a reference to a STUDY which was OBSERVED by SOCIOLOGISTS is an expression of denial.

Written by a British newspaper? So what, the article is about an American Study.

British hate Pashtuns with a passion? Then why are there thousands of Pashtun in Britain like Manzareh who collect British welfare? Wouldn't the "Hateful" British reject these people and turn them away?

You make very weak excuses , easy to debunk though

Yeah some modern Pashto singers sing Dari songs or have a song dedicated to Qataghani to appease their Tajik audiences and for the sake of pluralism, that does not mean that people in rural Afghanistan sit around listening and dancing to it because it is confined to Panjshir and the Shamal.

It's amazing you cop out saying Panjshiris look white and not tan, therefore it's not them. Was Ahmad Shah Masood not a Panjshiri because he didn't look white? Not all Panjshiris are white--many are quite tan. In any case, the gathering in your video is a Tajik one. Let's ask the members of this forum with the most experience living in Afghanistan who the people in your video are. They are not Pashtuns. If you were familiar with Afghanistan, your eyes would be trained enough to see that.

They want to appease their Tajik audiences by singing in Pashto,, these are PASHTO Qataghani, not Dari Qataghani? Niggah what? you can't possibly be this stupid. ....oh wait you are.

Ahmad Shah Massoud doesn't look white? Could have fooled me

The fact you think singing in PASHTO would appease Tajiks audiences pretty much debunks any claim you have for fronting familiarity with Afghanistan. So that card of yours has been shattered for ever now. o
