Immunity without compromising Afghan sovereignty :Karzai | Pajhwok Afghan News

Washington (PAN): Afghanistan will favorably look into the US demand of immunity to its soldier post 2014 without compromising its sovereignty, the President, Hamid Karzai, said Friday, even as his US counterpart, Barack Obama, insisted it would be difficult for him to have troops stationed in the country without some short of immunity for them.
“I can go to the Afghan people and argue for immunity for US troops in Afghanistan in a way that Afghan sovereignty will not be compromised, in a way that Afghan law will not be compromised, in a way that the provisions that we arrive at through our talks will give the United States the satisfaction of what it seeks and will also provide the Afghan people the benefits that they are seeking through this partnership and the subsequent agreement,” Karzai told reporters at a joint White House news conference.
With negotiations on Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) currently under way, Karzai, in response to a question from an American journalist noted that he understands that the issue of immunity is of very specific importance of the United States, as was, for Afghanistan, the issue of sovereignty and detentions and the continued presence of international forces in Afghan villages and the very conduct of the war itself. Now those issues have been addressed, he observed.
Obama in response to the same question insisted that the US would not keep its troops in Afghanistan post 2014, without the kind of immunity arrangement the United States has with other countries across the world.
“I've said to President Karzai that we have arrangements like this with countries all around the world. And nowhere do we have any kind of security agreement with a country without immunity for our troops. You know, that's how I, as commander in chief, can make sure that our folks are protected in carrying out very difficult missions. And so I think President Karzai understands that,” he said.
“I don't want to get ahead of ourselves in terms of the negotiations that are still remaining on the Bilateral Security Agreement. But I think it's fair to say that from my perspective, at least, it will not be possible for us to have any kind of U.S. troop presence post-2014 without assurances that our men and women who are operating there are in some way subject to the jurisdiction of another country,” Obama said.
Responding to another question, Obama said no decision has been made on the number of US troops in Afghanistan or the pace of drawdown of troops. He is awaiting for recommendations in this regard from the commanders on the ground, Obama said. Karzai said it is for the US to decide on the number of troops it will have in Afghanistan post 2014.
The two leaders addressed the joint press conference after holding a series of meetings at the White House since Friday morning including a one-o-one in the Oval Office, one with the two delegations and then the lunch. The two leaders also issued a joint statement, detailing the achievements in Afghanistan in recent years and the way forward.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

karzai accepting immunity for foreign troops in the land he rules and that don't take orders from him. not that its really his choice, but come on now. i can't wait till this pos is gone in 2014 and although his successor will still be a puppet, there is at least a breath of fresh air and some hope. i am reading that khalilzad is trying to run for the presidency in 2014, ANYONE would be better than him. ill take abdullah x2, dostum, massouds hell spawn child, anyone but khalilzad.

i got hopeful yesterday when i heard there was talk of obama taking out ALL troops from the country after 2014, but it seems unlikely.

      Zalmay Khalilzad?
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

yes, it is info from an article i read recently which i am trying to find now. apparently khalilzad has set up shop in kabul and has people doing his dirty work, making connections, and meeting with powerful figures in anticipation of his presidential run. if karzai goes with someone else, then he will be remembered as a puppet and nothing more, but if he endorses khalilzad, he might deserve the najib treatment.

I don't think a US national can become the president.

they made the laws and they can amend them, or he simply drops his citizenship and picks it back up with it suits him.

I think a foreign passport is just a document of convenience for expats. If you have the means to keep your next generations comfortable and safe then relinquishing a passport is no big loss for a picture in the Former Afghan President Hall of Fame (for those craving for power).

I feel Zalmay lacks the credibilty and appeal for this job. He should go home and listen to his mama sayin, zma da zRgai sar, zma da stargo tor (aah), or zma hoshiar zwoi!!!!

Or as they Say in German, milch boobie.

Zalmay is a Yankee shill and a sell out, he can barely speak in his mother tongue any more, sellouts like him can enjoy their American wives and bugger off.

I watched Kharzai's speech at Georgetown, this man is deluded, he honestly thinks the AFG security forces will stifle the insurgency. lol gtfo

I really hoope the next precident will be an educated man from Afghanistan, one that have lived there and knows what Afghans really need, but also have enough brains to bring Afghanistan forward instead of isolating it and bringing it back to the dark ages.

And this Zalmay looks like the other Farsiban, who are only by name Pakhtun but in reality are more Farsiban and in his case American.

Zalmay won't be able to make it. The only stronger contender that I see, who appears politically correct, is Dr.Abdullah. He can visit Kandahar and say, "Hey, I am Qandahari just like you guys", and visit the Tazeks and say, "I also have Tajik blood in me". He is a hybrid, who has a strategic advantage.

I don't think that the rest of Afghanistan are so found of him especialy Pashtun of the east, and by the way he is the wrong men to do this job, if he will be elected I bet Afghanistan will become totaly persianised and Pashtu will be pooshed in to a corner, and all the money will be invested in the north.

I remember when the draft of the constitution was being discussed years ago, some Pashtun politicians were pushing for Pashto to be protected in the constitution by making it obligatory for all politicians to read, write and speak Pashto.

Pashto needs to be shoved down their throats, the way they shove their language down ours.
