They must be using Hadoop, or some sort of data compression algorithm, but I can argue that to claim everything is 'permanently recorded' is simply not possible. You being an EE, I'm sure you can understand that we don't yet have such hardware which can store information permanently, nor have computer scientists pioneered algorithms that can store everything at such an unparalleled penetration rate. Can they record specific people? Of course. Can they record the entire world? No. That requires a lot more than speculation.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

        Hi Admin, Salamoona

I was a hardware design engineer and eventually focused on biomedical applications for device design with basic knowledge of programming languages. When I trained as engineer we were still back in the basic and C++ days and I am probably well below your level of understanding at this juncture so I can only conjecture. I am a circuit board guy but not a software guy.

From what I understand Assange is CS and was known to be a rather precocious hacker leading him down the path that he is still walking.

All I can recall is that there were published reports that they were able to access all deleted reports from that "particular guy" that they got in that "particular place" on his harddrives from nearly 8 years ago.

        http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn...012001799.html

Here is a piece buttressing what Assange said at least about googles capabilities.

He is alleging that when you take that ability of theirs, which the post is detailing regarding their most recent venture, it is happening on the data crossing international fiber optic cables.

Toward the tail end of the interview he appears to say he will release stuff via his organization that exposes these endeavors in the actual written record.

Also, what do you estimate is the lag time between various advances in science that occur behind closed doors for military purposes making its way out to the public?

For instance, the navy's ability to focus ultrasound and potentially utilize it for malignant purposes was noted well before engineers taking that technology and using it to burn tumors non invasively.

I can only assume that they have some of the brightest minds in the world doing some things with algorithms and hardware that under their control for now.

What are the implications for the passionate amongst us? surely members on this site amongst others, are under scrutiny too. Some of us blurt out many words, perhaps in bravado or lack of forethought that may invite unwelcome rapelling visitors dressed in black.

BA, you are right. Seeing how aggressively DoD and NSF recruits on our campus, one can image what they have under their sleeves.

This is true, but with regards to the US efforts to keep up their technological advancement- this in fact is not longer true. As of this year, it is now reported that many international companies no longer see the US as the leader of innovation, but China and Japan (who have a lot of money). There was a report on atimes about this.

Also, satellite connections (many nations put satellites into space) can not really be effectively monitored (you can also buy satellite internet). I dont think Assange touched up on that.

Furthermore, the West does not equal the world- there is a larger and now more successful world out there- If the West becomes a police state, it doesnt matter to the world anymore. The formation of a police state is symbolic of paranoia and also of a bleak economic future that will never improve (Russia did this after the Soviet union collapsed -which was also due to the the Soviet defeat in Afghanistan -ironic)
