* Scuffle erupted when IJT asked students not to hold reception for fellows
* Jamiat says ‘only’ it can arrange such functions

LAHORE: The peaceful environment at Punjab University (PU) was disturbed with a scuffle between Pashtun and Baloch students and Islami Jamiat Talaba (IJT) activists on Wednesday night.
A number of violent incidents have taken place in PU hostels in the last few months. An IJT activist was also killed in one such incident.
The latest skirmish was reported when Pashtun and Baloch students organised a tea party on Wednesday to welcome newcomers from their areas. Jamiat activists asked the organisers not to hold any such ceremony on the premises of PU without permission of IJT, saying that “only” IJT could arrange such functions.
“They [IJT activists] said that only IJT has the right to hold such ceremonies on PU premises,” a Pashtun student told Daily Times. However, PU Hall Council Chairman Dr Muhammad Akhtar and acting Chief Security Office Zaheer stepped in and settled the dispute between the two groups. But at around 1am on Thursday, some IJT activists entered hostel rooms and injured several Pashtun and Baloch students. Pashtun and Baloch students attacked the room of IJT Nazim Haq Nawaz in retaliation and injured an IJT activist who was illegally residing in PU hostels.
IJT activists also injured PU State Officer Zubair Butt and damaged his car when he reached the spot to settle the dispute. Pashtun and Baloch students also staged a demonstration on Canal Road on Thursday and blocked traffic to protest against the IJT’s attack.
Punjab University Academic Staff Association (PUASA) also issued a statement, condemning the attack on the university’s state officer. PUASA acting President Dr Ehsan Sharif said that IJT activists “consider PU their own property and disturb the peaceful environment of the university”. He condemned the brutal torture on the PU official and demanded the Punjab chief minister take strict action against IJT activists and take steps to “clear PU from political elements”.
However, IJT also issued a statement and denied its activists had attacked Pashtun and Baloch students. It accused the PU vice chancellor and administration of organising the attack “to conspire against IJT”.
