  • Determining sources of racism---a hypothetical scenario.

The events like what happened to Sikhs in Wisconsin today leaves me insecure and scared ---and makes me wonder what might be the reasons/sources. Would we ultimately be able to build a world based on cosmopolitanism and humanism or would we withdraw into our respective cultural/ideological and civilizational niche? Such a world would be very painful to live in.

Imagine an equal number of kids of all races white, brown, yellow, black, etc. raised in an ideal environment insulated from cultural and ideological biases of their respective societies, would they still develop xenophobia and racist tendencies?

that is an impossible scenario, i imagine but i was raised in an atheist household and i have friends from all different races and have enjoyed my travels and living, in about 28 different countries.
i believe we are all equal but have different challenges for this life.

I was born, educated and raised in an environment like this, and lived in them when I was in the US. For many the answer is yes. That's a complicated question but a good one, I'll think it over and get back to you with an answer as concise as I can make it. Do you live in a cosmopolitan city? Did you grow up in a multicultural / multiracial area?

I assume you suggest racial separatism or segregation with different races living in their own niche and preserving their racial heritage but still treating each other at a level of equality and allowing a degree of interaction. I think faye is also suggesting something like that.

I think that would be a realistic solution to the inter-racial harmony issue but the problem is some races try to dominate others ---

But I was proposing a scenario where kids were raised insulated from their cultural values and raised based on a universal humanistic ideology instead of socially transmitted influences of their respective societies.

Toramana, the solution to this problem is education. When ignorance is prevalent at such high levels, one must not be surprised to see such tragedies.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Admin Khan, the problem seems to be more complicated linked with sense of identity, cultural and racial heritage and legacy, etc.

Not too complicated. It is latent animal behavior. Territorial nature, pack mentality. Survival of one group by sole access resources.

i don't think the answer is education as there are many educated racists.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.
