  • Kalash valleys will be lost if not included in Unesco World Heritage

PESHAWAR, July 23: The Kalash Environmental Protection Society has demanded of the government to submit a bid to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco) to include the Kalash valleys’ culture in the World Heritage List for preservation.

In a press release issued here on Monday, the society said that the Kalash valleys were changing fast. Unauthorised construction, destruction of forests and smuggling of timber were the external factors that were affecting the Kalash community while increasing pressure of acculturation and resources were influencing the community from within, it added.

The release said that the final date in the current year for the government to submit a bid of inscription to the World Heritage List was September 30. Otherwise Kalash valleys would have to wait for another year and who knew how much of what could be saved would be lost by that time, it added.

The release said that no discussion about diversity of Pakistani culture and cultural heritage was complete without mentioning Kalash valleys. However, in official record Kalash valleys were not different from hundreds of other valleys in Pakistan, it added.

Pakistan has six properties inscribed on Unesco World Heritage List. These include Moenjodaro, Taxila, ruins of Takht Bhai, Monuments in Makli, Rohtas Fort and Shahi Qilla and Shalamar Gardens in Lahore.

According to the statement there were 18 Pakistani sites on Unesco Tentative List, one biosphere reserve and 14 national parks with the total of more than 150 internationally recognised protected sites, but, unfortunately, Kalash valleys are not included in any of these categories.

It recalled that during a workshop held on February 29, 2012 in the Heritage Library at Lok Virsa the then federal secretary for national heritage and integration Faridullah Khan had said that keeping in view the heritage of the Kalash valleys and the threats posed to it, the ministry was keen to come up with a comprehensive plan for safeguarding it.

It was decided that the draft proposal to enroll Kalash on the World Heritage List would be prepared within 45 days, special development package for Kalash valleys would be announced and the government would take steps for preservation and documentation of Kalasha culture. “However, the people of the valleys have no information about the status of the draft proposal,” the press release said.

I have seen Kalash valley. Its a paradise on earth.

Another issue is the forceful conversion of the so called kafirs to Islam by extremists and the subtle activities of Tableeghi jumaat to convert them.

Pakistan don't deserve all these beautiful places like FATA, Pakhtunkhwa and Baluchistan.

The forceful conversion by EXTREMISTS like Wahabis, Ahle hadith, Salafis, Taliban, Deobandis and the subtle conversion by the Tableeghis who pursuade then with their apparently soft but lethal words not by swords of the extremists. Although many times Tableeghis are more dangerous than the extremists as they do their work with diplomacy and trick. Tableeghis are after all an off shoot of Deobandis and very similar in beliefs to Salafis or Wahabis.

Well we don't need a kafir to tell us who is good and who is bad.

I have visited the place. Kafirs/Kalash are really treated by Pak administration as caged rabbits for experiment in sociology, ethnology, etc. It is really criminal to prevent this people from joining the mainstream of national life. They are barred from enjoying the fruits of civilization.

1.They are barred by administrative measures. Employment, education, healthcare and participation in public life are areas where they are kept somewhat absent. Well meaning citizens or NGOs are prevented from coming to the aid of these people. It is officially a fact that some sociological studies are carried out on them.

                      2. India does the same thing, but in a more exposed manner in Andaman - Nicobar Islands.

True, but I think the problem is both of those people are so unique, that is why governments dont want them too assimilate them in to main stream cultures and ways

i read that the natives of nicobar/andamans suffered from catching diseases from other people entering their areas, so outsiders were or are banned from the protected native lands.

No need to use such language. If you read Islam, forceful conversion is in fact not allowed. An individual has the right to practice whatever he believes in as long as it doesn't hinder anyone else's rights. The Kalash people should choose for themselves freely what they want to believe in, and forcing them to convert is inhuman. How would it feel if I pressured you into converting to another religion, such as Hinduism (using as an example)? And by the way, saying "how much pork do you consume per day?" in a mocking fashion is quite disrespectful. I'm not pointing my fingers towards you, as I've seen many fellow users with similar mannerisms.

The words you use while discussing anything with another user, reveals your personality. Don't be so hot-headed, discuss anything you want in an intelligent manner as it reveals your maturity and wisdom. If you're such a fighter for Islam, then you should know that no prophet in Islam or Sahaba has disrespected another's beliefs or has put down another. If someone doesn't agree with you, either move on, discuss more intelligently or agree on disagreeing. Don't take everything so personally.

True wisdom comes to each of us when we realize how little we understand about life, ourselves, and the world around us. - Socrates
