They were actually appreciating it more becuase the project gave the men of their village some work, otherwise they were unemployed.

This village appears to be in Katawaz, Sharan or other northern parts of Paktika near Ghazni, because of their accent.
The whole province is a remote and forgotten area when it comes to development and aid.

Becuase similar to this in Khost in my mothers village Gemans had build similar canals some 40 years ago, and it looked like this. Thats way its in my eyes low quality, if somebody new to that era would saw those for the first time, they would never tought that those are new. I don't want to bitch but just look at it, 2 years later it would be totaly erroded away.

You are probably right, they use cheap materials and half-hearted labour.

Not to mention a lack of experience/training amongst the Afghans of Paktika.

Herat and Mazar and Kabul, etc. all get reconstruction, but Paktia is always left out.
