I believe in niyat and respect with kalaam, whether it is bismillah or any ayat. I noted that his humouring bismillah is indication how much reverence he attached to uttering bismillah. If it is trivial then his value of these words is trivial.

Plus, one should make an effort to utter the words correctly to best of ones education.
