Who is behind renewed blasts?
INCIDENTS of bomb blasts have once again started taking place in Khyber Pakhtoonkhwa in general and in FATA in particular taking heavy toll of lives. A deadliest blast in Landi Kotal in Khyber Agency on Saturday claimed 26 lives and later in the nearby district of Kohat, a bomb hidden in a handcart killed seven people, among them some police officers.
Usually, such blasts are the handiwork of banned TTP, but its spokesman denied its involvement in the Landi Kotal blast. The question arises if not TTP, then who is behind the wave of renewed blasts? The Pakistani army has carried out several operations to flush out militants in the Afghan border regions. Landi Kotal is near one of the two crossings for Nato supplies heading across the border into Afghanistan, but Islamabad closed the route last year to protest US airstrikes in November that hit Pakistani troops at a security checkpost in Salala. The Landi Kotal blast was well planned as the explosive laden passenger vehicle was parked at Zakha Khel bus stand which went off with a big bang at rush hours before noon causing heavy casualties. Now that TTP has denied its involvement, it is clear that the blast was carried out by inimical forces who want to create further instability in the area to force the government to launch an all out operation in North Waziristan against the hideouts of militants. The US has long been pressing Pakistan for an operation in NWA but Pakistan army is already overstretched in FATA and cannot go all out in the agency except for targeted operations. Several people in the area also blamed elements from across the Durand Line for the blast in Landi Kotal. Therefore we would impress upon the government and the law enforcement agencies to step up the intelligence gathering activities with the assistance of locals to ward off such blasts in the future that are taking innocent lives.
