  • Taliban praise India for resisting Afghan entanglement

KABUL: India has done well to resist US calls for greater involvement in Afghanistan, the Taliban said in a rare direct comment about one of the strongest opponents of the hardline militant group that was ousted from power in 2001.

The Taliban also said they won’t let Afghanistan be used as a base against another country, addressing fears in New Delhi that Pakistan-based anti-India militants may become more emboldened if the Taliban return to power.

The Afghan Taliban have longstanding ties to Pakistan and striking a softer tone towards its arch rival India could be a sign of a more independent course.

Direct talks with the United States – which have since been suspended – and an agreement to open a Taliban office in Qatar to conduct formal peace talks have been seen as signs of a more assertive stance.

US Defense Secretary Leon Panetta this month encouraged India to take a more active role in Afghanistan as most foreign combat troops leave in 2014. The Taliban said Panetta had failed.

“He spent three days in India to transfer the heavy burden to their shoulders, to find an exit, and to flee from Afghanistan,” the group said on its English website.

“Some reliable media sources said that the Indian authorities did not pay heed to (US) demands and showed their reservations, because the Indians know or they should know that the Americans are grinding their own axe.”

There had been no assurance for the Americans, Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid told Reuters on Sunday.

“It shows that India understands the facts,” he said.

India is one of the biggest donors in Afghanistan, spending about $2 billion on projects ranging from the construction of highways to the building of the Afghan parliament. It has also won an iron ore concession in a $11 billion investment.

But New Delhi has avoided involvement in bolstering Afghan security, except for running courses for small groups of Afghan army officers at military institutions in India.

“No doubt that India is a significant country in the region, but is also worth mentioning that they have full information about Afghanistan because they know each other very well in the long history,” the Taliban said.

“They are aware of the Afghan aspirations, creeds and love for freedom. It is totally illogical they should plunge their nation into a calamity just for the American pleasure.”

India backed the Northern Alliance during the civil war and was frozen out of Afghanistan once the Taliban took over in 1996 until their ouster by US forces. It has since developed close ties with Kabul, prompting Pakistani fears of encirclement.

Pakistan has strong traditional links with the Afghan Taliban and other militant groups. Islamabad denies that it uses them as proxies to gain leverage in Afghanistan ahead of any settlement to the war, or in case civil war breaks out after foreign troops leave.

Vikram Sood, a former chief of India’s intelligence agency, said the Taliban statement held an implicit warning for India.

“It’s more a gentle reminder asking India not to mess around in Afghanistan after the Americans leave,” he told Reuters.

Taliban hails India’s cool response towards US

        June 17, 2012 | Filed under: Latest,National,Top News,Top Story | Posted by: admin

        By NVONews.Com Correspondent,
Perhaps for the first time since they came to power in Afghanistan in Sep 1996 till now the Taliban––subsequently ousted by US and allied forces in November 2001––on Sunday praised India for resisting the US pressure for greater involvement in Afghanistan.
Reacting to the US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta’s appeal to India to take a more active role in Afghanistan, the Taliban said that as the United States had failed it now wants to seek India’s help to have some say in the country.
According to the English website of Taliban Panetta spent three days in India “to transfer the heavy burden to their shoulders, to find an exit, and to flee from Afghanistan.”
The website said that “some reliable media sources said that the Indian authorities did not pay heed to (US) demands and showed their reservations, because the Indians know or they should know that the Americans are grinding their own axe.”
It needs to be recalled that in May 20-21 meet of 28 NATO countries in Chicago it was decided to withdraw all the 1,30,000 foreign forces from that war-ravaged Central Asian country by Dec 31, 2014. About 90,000 of these forces are from the United States, which certainly want India to play a more positive role.
India, on its part, is providing more than two billion US dollar in assistance to projects in Afghanistan. It is constructing highways and building Afghan Parliament. But India has refrained from intervening too much in the Afghan affairs for obvious historical and geographical reasons.
Even Taliban concedes that “India is a significant country in the region” and has “full information about Afghanistan because they know each other very well in the long history.”
The Taliban statement said that “they (India) are aware of the Afghan aspirations, creeds and love for freedom. It is totally illogical they should plunge their nation into a calamity just for the American pleasure.”
Afghan-watchers are of the view that India has a very good relationship with President Hamid Karzai, who had spent quite a few years in Shimla during his students days. Even if Taliban gains power after the withdrawal of the NATO forces––as is being feared in many circles––they may adopt a different policy. They know how Saudi Arabia, UAE and Pakistan betrayed them in the hour of crisis.
Both Hamid Karzai and any future Taliban government in Kabul may now look towards Pakistan with suspicion. True, they will have to rely on its ports because Afghanistan is a landlocked country, yet in future they will surely adopt a different policy.
The Sunday’s statement of Taliban is a significant departure from the past and drops enough hint about new relationship with India.

India might have done something inhumane, I suppose.

Could you elaborate on your thoughts a little bit more?

Why and how should India collapse if the get involved in Afghanistan?

By the way, they are involved by building schools and hospitals.
                The only constant is change.

Pakistan is breaking apart, and for all practical purposes is trying to get out of the path of destruction that Musharraf put it on by supporting the NATO war in Afghanistan. Due to this, there is a growing FATA insurgency.

Do you think India wants to follow Pakistan's path of destruction, especially, considering they have over 200 million Muslims.

The Kashmir issue would reignite from the dormant state it is in.

India has thought very wisely in refraining from being the West's new poodle. They see what has happened right across the border in Pakistan.

Do you think they want a new Muslims state within India of 100 million or so created?

Some more proof that Pakistan has always leaned on the Pashtun while India has supported other ethnic groups. But hey still Pakistan must be the enemy of Pashtuns... even if a Pashtun named Imran Khan wins elections and rules the country.
