'Pakistan isolated in corridors of power in US'

    Last Updated: Saturday, May 26, 2012, 15:12

Washington: The Obama administration has joined lawmakers in condemning the conviction of Pakistani doctor Shakil Afridi, who helped the CIA trace Osama bin Laden, leaving Pakistan isolated in the corridors of power in the US capital.

America's top two "Pakistan friendly" foreign policy makers - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and Senator John Kerry - have also denounced a tribal court's decision to jail Dr Shakil Afridi for 33 years, reports The Dawn.

Hillary called the judgment "unjust and unwarranted" and Senator Kerry said even though he believed in "the importance of the US-Pakistan strategic relationship, realities like these make that effort more difficult".

"We regret both the fact that he was convicted and the severity of his sentence. We are raising his case and we will continue to do so because we think that his treatment is unjust and unwarranted," Hillary said.

She pointed out that Dr Afridi "was instrumental in taking down one of the world's most wanted murderers. That was clearly in Pakistan's interest, as well as ours and the rest of the world's".

Senator Kerry said, "The irony is, the only person being punished is the person who helped the United States achieve justice for the murder of thousands of Americans."

A senate panel has deducted USD 33 million from a proposed assistance to Pakistan – USD 1 million for each year Dr Afridi will spend in jail.

A senior Pakistani diplomat who spent a day in the Congress House noted that wherever he went, he confronted a "bipartisan anger at Pakistan from very angry congressmen and women".

The US lawmakers, he pointed out, "are not interested in our arguments, even though we tried to argue that no country allows foreign governments, even if friendly, to engage spies".

Other diplomats also noted that no friends in the House were willing to speak for Pakistan.

"Isolate Pakistan seems to be the new plan. US-Pakistan relationship is entering a very bad phase," said one of them.

Jailing informer costs Pakistan $33million in U.S. aid

    By Mail Today Reporter
    PUBLISHED: 23:52 GMT, 25 May 2012 | UPDATED: 23:52 GMT, 25 May 2012

Outraged over the conviction of a Pakistani doctor who helped the CIA track Osama bin Laden, two U.S. Senate panels have voted overwhelmingly to cut aid to Islamabad by $33million - one million for every year of the physician's 33-year sentence for high treason.

The Republicans and Democrats closed ranks to unanimously vote that the Senate appropriations committee should cut $1million for every year Dr Shakil Afridi spends in jail, reflecting the growing Congressional anger towards Pakistan over its lack of cooperation in combating terrorism.

The punitive action by the lawmakers came close on the heels of deep cuts announced in the key Senate panels in aid to Pakistan.

The appropriations committee approved the amendment to cut the aid on a 30-0 vote on Thursday.

The same day, the Senate armed services committee limited the availability of the $1.75 billion Coalition Support Fund (CSF) unless the defence secretary certified Afridi hadn't been imprisoned.

The criteria for the availability of the CSF to Pakistan also includes not supporting or providing safe havens to insurgents attacking U.S., Afghan and coalition forces in Afghanistan.

The provision also makes clear that no CSF payments may be made to reimburse Pakistan for claims relating to the period when the lines of supply through Pakistan to Afghanistan remain closed, the panel said.

The U.S. has insisted there is no basis to imprison Afridi on treason charges.

'We regret both the fact that he was convicted and the severity of his sentence," secretary of state Hillary Clinton said on Friday.

'We are raising it (his case) and we will continue to do so because we think his treatment is unjust and unwarranted.'
But Pakistan Peoples' Party (PPP) chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari justified Afridi's prosecution, telling the CNN: 'It is against the law in any country to cooperate with foreign intelligence… We have an independent judiciary which the PPP restored. I have no control over their outcome.'

The latest decision by the key Senate panel represents about four per cent of the $800million set aside for Pakistan for 2013.

Another House committee had made similar recommendations early this week. During the markup, Senators Patrick Leahy and Lindsey Graham called Pakistan 'a schizophrenic ally, which has suffered the worst losses at the hands of militants while at the same time harbouring the Haqqani network and other groups'.

'If this is cooperation, I would hate like heck to see opposition,' Leahy said.

Influential Democrat Senator Dianne Feinstein pointed out that Pakistan has suffered at the hands of terrorists, yet misconstrued what is treason in convicting Afridi.

She also insisted Afridi wasn't a spy. 'I don't know which side of the war Pakistan is on. This makes me seriously question our financial support to Pakistan,' she said.

The substantial reduction in House and Senate panels comes despite warning from the White House that such a move could be counter-productive in getting Pakistan's cooperation in the war against terror

Dont worry buddy, without the Pakistan slaves support for the NATO war/Karza regime, it will end in no time, and peace will be there.

You are an idiot repeating the blackmailing rhetoric of your idiotic policy makers in the ISI. Your BS about Pakistan being on the occupiers side, and assisting NATO/USA with supply routes etc. will not render you any good from the idiot Talibs as the have come to know your game too good and will settle for anything independent of any Paki manipulations and nor will it have any buying in the U.S. In reality you are the one who is blackmailed on all sides. Fool.

                      Speak with sense buddy,

The NATO war in Afghanistan that began in 2001 started from Pakistan airbases, and was supported by Pakistan supply routes at Torkham and Chaman. Musharraf sold Afghanistan out and sold Pashtun bloodshed on both sides.

No other country fell in line with the NATO. Even India refused to go along with it.

As of right now, despite the ground supply routes being closed, Pakistan gives the air supply routes, called the Air Lines of Communication. This is the only way NATO has been getting lethal supplies.

Uzbekistan and Russia and the rest of the Northern Distribution Network only allow non-lethal supplies.

                      So there you have it.

You want to know about Karzai, that joke. He flew on a chopper from Islamabad to Kabul aboard American aircraft.

Dont think Kayani did not want to open the supply routes. he was 100% backing it, and wanted to let the civilian government take the fall.

You want to know why the ground supply routes are not open? DPC and PTI.

The public in Pakistan has never been supportive of the NATO war and Pakistan support for it. They want it to end. You can respect their decision, can you not?

                          Fact.

Lethal supplies for NATO come via Pakistan air supply routes. It is the ONLY country that is supplying NATO with lethal supply routes. They have shut down the Ground supply routes, called the Ground Lines of Communication, but the air supply routes are still open, called the Air Lines of Communication.

Every lethal supply used by NATO in Afghanistan comes VIA Pakistan air supply routes. Has always, and still is.

Those bullets responsible for the Panjwai murders comes via Pakistan air supply routes.

You are a fool dilly dallying in a past politic which has nothing to do with what is going on right now.

Without Pakistan, the NATO war was never possible.

Paki people do not matter. Most of them are fools and being made fools of by all Paki parties and politicians who are no more than a pimp like you. What are your ISI associates and relatives up to these days? Why don't share your great ideas with them where it could mean the most with an actual impact. Have you not consulted them yet?

The U.S. is paying you enough for your service. Stop blackmailing.

This is a matter of fact, not opinion

Lethal nato supplies come via Pakistan air supply routes. This has been ongoing since 2001, from the start of the war.

The Northern Distribution Network only supplies non-lethal supplies

You dont want to accept the fact, then fantasize that Delhi is giving NATO supplies.

The issue at hand though is this, you seem to be very content with Pakistan supporting the NATO war with NATO supply routes?

Why? Dont you consider this Pakistani interference?
