Opposition parties vow to ensure Nato supplies blockade

Opposition parties on Tuesday warned the government against reopening of Nato supply route and vowed to strongly resist the expected move, as the government is all set to allow non-lethal cargo transit through Pakistan to Afghanistan.

The major opposition party, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), in its reaction said that the supplies to the Nato forces should not be resumed unless implementation on the unanimous resolutions of the parliament.
Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that his party was ready to approach others including Pakistan Tehreek-e-Inasf (PTI), Jamaat-e-Islam, Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam-Fazal (JUI-F) and other political parties against the reopening of Nato supply route."The party, which is already on the streets, would strongly resist, if the government once again threw the unanimous resolutions of the parliament into the dustbin," PML-N central secretary information Senator Mushahidullah Khan told Business Recorder, adding that his party was of the view that the parliamentary resolutions should be implemented in letter and spirits before reopening of the Nato supply route. He said that the parliament has called for seeking an apology from the US for the last year Salala attack and to stop the drone strikes inside the country.

"No apology has come from Washington so far and the drone strikes are still going on...but our rulers are reopening the Nato supplies," he regretted."We have already made it clear that...we are not recognising this government.

So, how can we accept its decisions," Mushidullah said while referring to his party's stance following Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani's conviction by the apex court.

JUI-F Senator Haji Ghulam Ali said his party leadership would soon convene meeting to chalk out strategy against the expected move to resume Nato supplies.

JUI-F chief Maulana Fazal-ur-Rehman had warned to 'physically' block if the government decided to reopen the Nato supplies."Nato supply route should not be re-opened unless the US gives an assurance to respect Pakistan sovereignty and integrity," Haji Ghulam Ali came up with some flexible reaction.

He, however, said that the nation would not allow reopening of Nato supply route.

He said that his party's stance was very clear that the re-opening of Nato supply route could be a decision of PPP and its allies and not of the nation.

"We are against the re-opening of Nato supply route and our party would soon meet to chalk out future course of action in this regard," he maintained. He, however, said that the JU-F was not against Pak-US relations but it should be based on mutual respect and equality.

PTI central secretary information Shafqat Mehmood said that PTI from the day one was against Pakistan involvement in the US 'so-called' war on terror.

He said that Pakistan has already suffered heavy losses to its economy, adding "we have lost more than 35,000 people including security forces men in this war imposed on us".

He further said that his party would announce future strategy against the expected resumption of Nato supplies in a public meeting to be addressed by party's chief Imran Khan at Liaqat Bagh in Rawalpindi on May 27.
