Taliban denies killing member of Afghan peace council

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) -- The Taliban is denying responsibility for the assassination of a top member of the Afghan peace council and a senator in Parliament, although they have publicly threatened to target peace negotiators and others working with the government.
Arsala Rahmani, a former high-ranking Taliban official working to end the war in Afghanistan, was shot to death Sunday.
Police say an assassin with a silencer-equipped pistol shot Rahmani, who was in his 70s, as he was riding in his car in one of the capital's most secure areas, near Kabul University. Police say the gunman fired from a car that pulled up alongside Rahmani's vehicle at an intersection.
The killing was another setback to U.S.-backed efforts to negotiate a political resolution to the war. Last September, a former Afghan president, who was head of the peace council, was assassinated in his Kabul home by a suicide bomber.

He was against the occupation, and Karzai did not like him just as Karzai did not like Zaeef for the same reasons.

Which people are pro-war/pro-occupation and against peace?

Who wants the war to continue?

karzai didn't like him? i am pretty sure he was one of karzais advisors and was appointed by karzai to the peace council.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

this is terrible. peace negotiarors being assassinated by obviously professional assassins.
i may be wrong but i doubt the taliban are going to use silencer-equipped pistols.

americans had no reason to kill a go between personality like him that was pro reconciliation, nor do moderate talibs who seek peace. but it is the taliban who have publicly said that they would kill government officials and members of the peace council. so lets not pretend that pointing the finger at the taliban is outrageous here.

Do you know whether he was pro-occupation or against the occupation?

the biggest losers to a peaceful afghanistan is the ISI, considering how professional this was done, I have to point my fingers at them. The taliban would use a suicide bomber or a hail of machinegun fire.

the guy in this scenerio used one bullet and a silencer.

I agree on that but it could also be a Blackwater- my hunch is that Rahman had made a breakthrough- meaning a peace that would see a full withdrawal by NATO- something that would accommodate the Taliban's main interest. Seeing as he was a Talib, I doubt he would ever favor an occupation.

There are many people who would be against such a peace.

for the Karzai regime, peace has never been a priority but sustaining the status quo has been his only priority and objective.

shooting someone and driving away is not exactly difficult.

The moderates in the taliban want to be recognized as a legitimate political party that would like to have a say in Afghanistans future. If they are recognized by the afghan governmnet and NATO, then they would depend less on the ISI. these moderates want the killing and the suffering to stop.
