Afghanistan is moving in the right direction. What we need to do for now is to support and strengthen the Kabul Govt and develop state institutions. The foriegn policy of the Afghan Govt is in exactly the right place. All the regional threats to Afghanistan are on its last legs. The major powers in the region, India, China, the Central Asian Republics now have a stake in the stability and development of Afghanistan.

^ What "right" direction name one thing that is happening "right" in Afghanistan ?

Anyways to become a developed nation we have to become a develping country first.

The Silk Road study tries to visualize the kind of Afghanistan that might exist after US troops begin coming home starting in July 2011. Instead of being a lawless frontier, this post-conflict Afghanistan would be a transit route for Eurasia, providing trade corridors north and south, east and west.

To make this transport-led strategy work, Afghanistan would need to build more roads, railways and pipelines. A hypothetical railway map shows routes that connect Iran with India, Russia with Pakistan, China with the Arabian Gulf. It knits together the rising powers of this region and makes Afghanistan a hub, rather than a barrier.

I first heard discussion of this modern Silk Road idea from Ashraf Ghani, a former Afghan finance minister. He made a powerful analogy to America’s own development: What secured the lawless American Wild West frontier was the transcontinental railroad in 1869. With trade and economic growth came stability.
Asian nations understand the benefits they could gain from transit links across Afghanistan. Take the ring road that links Afghanistan’s biggest cities; the US has pumped $1.8 billion into this and other road projects since 2002, but neighboring Iran has also put up a hefty $220 million. China has built roads connecting its western Xinjiang province with Afghanistan, by way of Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan, and the Chinese are now building a $50 million roadway in Wardak Province

^ That 'new' found wealth was found back when the russians came, these discoveries didnt happen now..when the russians came they knew exactly what they were coming for..Herat is in Iran's hands, i just finished reading a BBC review on a UN report on Afghanistan and the violcence is up 94% since last year

These discoveries aren't meant for Afghanistan, rather it was a publicity stunt by the US to get more "private" contractors to back their operations in Afghanistan. US economy is tatters and they cannot support new operations in Afghanistan without putting more pressure on the economy. So what do they do ? they publicize these geological suverys which have been around for twenty years to rope in mining companies ..These companies are US companies, not only will they be getting ridiculous deals to mine the hell out of all these reserves but they will also be paying US forces to provide cover for these operations..and thats in addition to all the revenue they will be gathering up for the US

And above is not even the prime goal of all this, the main reason for publicizing all this was to turn the American public opinion regarding this war, as long as the American public knows there is something they can drill or mine out of Afghanistan they will keep supporting these operations. US might withdraw from Afghanistan, but it will never leave these reserves alone..just look at what they did to Africa

Would you like to pin point whatexactly is happening wrong in Afghanistan? Your general comment is of no practical importance otherwise.

What needs to be done to become a developing country?

The second part of your comment is ambiguous too.

Do you think the world is out there to safeguard Afghan resources?

Here hope this proves to be "pratically" important, since these people are pracically dying everyday and the stuation within the country is "practically" detereorating..so "practically" it would be impractical for foreign investors to invest in rebuilding the economy.

These are all published in the BBC report, which is inferred from the UN report on Afghanistan

-Violence in Afghanistan has increased dramatically in the first four months of this year, the UN says.

-In a quarterly report to the UN Security Council, it said roadside bomb attacks rose by 94%, compared with the same period in 2009.

-On average, there were three suicide bombings a week, half of them in the country's volatile south.

-Afghanistan's overall security situation "has not improved" since the UN's last report in March.

-Assassinations have risen 45%, with the Taliban and others increasingly successful at killing Afghan officials.

-Sophisticated suicide bombings had doubled from last year to roughly two per month.

-The shift to more complex suicide attacks demonstrates a growing capability of the local terrorist networks linked to al-Qaeda

-The alarming trend of increased improvised explosive device incidents and the occurrence of complex suicide attacks persisted.

its not about tapping the resources, it about the contracts you assign..what matters is what kind of deals you make. What these companies will do is give kickbacks to the corrupt goons and then whisk of all the stuff..Normally countries would negotiate stuff like %Share in the profits, Transfer of Technology, building refineries in the country where mining is being done, chosing routes to optimize benefits..and all that, with the kind of deals that are likely to go through the common people will be getting zero benefit..the only people benefitting would be the warlords and their lords

Either way you put it, Afghans have a win-win situation in this.

look at the chinese deal we inked. They are even building a mosque for us.

^ China treats ISI like a favorite nephew, they got that deal through them..and what are the contents of the deal ? nobody knows, just getting a deal is nothing..they could easily be ripping us off and we are happy cuz we gotta deal ?
