Pakistan rejects US demand for NWA military operation

ISLAMABAD - Pakistan has firmly turned down renewed US demands for a full-scale military operation in North Waziristan Agency (NWA) against the Haqqani network allegedly based there, and blamed by Washington for recent coordinated attacks in Kabul and other parts of Afghanistan.
The Obama administration resumed pressure on Islamabad for military action in North Waziristan. The demand was first made by US Ambassador to Pakistan Cameron Munter during his meeting with Foreign Minister Hina Rabbani Khar which took place after the Kabul attacks, followed by a telephone call from US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to her Pakistani counterpart. Besides, official sources say that the US also conveyed the demand to the Pakistan Army leadership through military channels. However, Pakistan has once again refused to budge to US pressure for launching a military offensive in North Waziristan, where the Obama administration believes that senior Taliban leader Siraj Haqqani is hiding, along with his fighters.
US Ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan C Crocker also blamed the Haqqani network on Thursday for conducting coordinated attacks in Kabul and other cities. Talking to reporters in Kabul, he demanded Pakistan to crack down on what he called “Haqqani safe havens” in Pakistan. “There is no question in our minds that the Haqqanis were responsible for these attacks. We know where their leadership lives and we know where these plans are made in Pakistan,” he said. A Pakistani diplomat seeking anonymity, however, rejected US allegations, saying that everything that happens in Kabul is not planned in Pakistan’s tribal belt.
“There might be Taliban fighters present in North Waziristan and other tribal areas, but blaming those people for every bad thing that happens in Afghanistan seems to have become the Americans’ habit now,” he said, while ruling out the possibility of a new military offensive in North Waziristan. A security official, who also sought anonymity, confirmed that the US was exerting increasing pressure on Pakistan for a new military offensive. However, he too rejected the likelihood of any such offensive, saying that would put too much burden on Pakistani security forces already overstretched due to ongoing operations in areas such Khyber and Orakzai agencies.

so why have they toned down their "several thousand warnings and last chances" rhetoric? Dont they need to say now that Pakistan is behind every single thing from Occupy Wall Street to the Arab Spring? What happened all of the sudden?

OH, its the supply lines that they think the Pakistani Military/civilian government can miraculously open against the will of the people.

    Stupid me!!!!

BTW to all you PRO-WAR people, those transit routes will not be opened at all

so when is imran or any other religious party going to bring up the topic of american bases on paki soil?

pakistan is playing the cat and mouse game with america because it can. pakistan will not go after the haqqanis or anyone else that are not a direct threat to its government unless there is a reason for them to do so. america, besides rhetoric has not intention of cutting off aid to the country so the status quo remains. pakistan figures they are still making money so whats the point in spoiling a good thing with the haqqanis.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Well, I think you are missing the point.

Last time, they said Pakistan needs to take actions against the so called Haqqani network. They even said they would take unilateral action. Well, 7 months have passed. What happened?

They spent maybe 5-6 weeks issuing warnings and "last warnings"

My question is why arent they doing the same now?

        What happened all the sudden?

Wheres is all the usual "Pakistan is behind every single insurgency in the world" story line?

you are missing the point of my post. pakistan will hold out for as long as it has to as long as the money is coming in. there is no threat to the influx of money so why would pakistan do anything?

as for pakistan being behind every insurgency claim, of course you are exaggerating to make a point but lets not forget that america and pakistan both denied backing the mujahadin in the 80s when the russians accused them of doing so. insurgencies need bases to operate, this is a fact of life. this was true in the 80s and its true now.

Dont know what Imran has to do with this, but anyways, he has a lot of support, and is slated to be the next PM.

How is this different then any other country? Did American go after the Ku Klux Klan when it was attacking black people? Pakistan has already caused a mid-tier civil war in the tribal areas due to their operations there which are actually illegal since the tribal areas have autonomy.

Well, if Imran Khan sticks to his constant refrain, he is going to reject US aid. His said it about a billion times. It is doubtful he is making crap up now. Kharzai said he will sign the tissue paper pact, and he has signed it. There is a limit to saying things to get elected.

On the contrary, it is very costly internally for Pakistan or any other country for that matter to just start another war within their own country. Its not as simple as you make it. Pakistan already lost over 5000 soldiers in Waziristan and also got defeated in Waziristan.

actually, they already froze like $800 million, and will freeze more if the transit routes are not opened. Anyways, like I said, Imran claims he will reject the aid (a novel idea and unheard of) so we will see what happens when he takes charge.

the fact is FATA is disputed territory ever since the British made the Durrand line.

The exact reverse of what you are saying is true. Without Pakistan support, the NATO war/Kharzai regime cant go on, and will gradually come to an end. This is a fact of life.

The Syrian insurgency enjoys safe havens in Turkey. I was not disputing the account of what is termed safe havens.

What I am saying is everything that happens in Afghanistan is not due to some man farting and thinking things up in GHQ. This Saleh infused narrative/Awami National Party narrative is a simple one to justify supporting a war that exclusively focuses on Pashtuns on both sides.

pakistan is ALL ABOUT $$$$, its why a country with a horrible economy is a nuclear power. money, power, and bitches. these people don't think long term and have no grasp on how to run an economy which is why india has left it in the dust. also, is there any proof that that 800 million in aid is still suspended?

again, i question your hope in imran khan when its the isi and army that control the country. a few years ago it was people cheering zadari who thought he would bring change, but like all civilian elected governments, its simply powerless.

I never said I have hope in Imran Khan, nor did I ever say I could get into his mind. calm down.

The dude is clean and he is not a Zardari or a Kharzai. There is no comparison at all. His personal life is of no consequence. This guy has no financial corruption on him at all. On the contrary, the dude has a pretty good record with humanitarian work and charity (his hosptial too)

you cant have the cake and eat it too.

I mean Imran Khan cant be this hyped up somebody who supposedly will make Afghanistan Pakistan's 5th province, and also be at the same time some powerless individual who wont accomplish anything at all. Which narrative is it?

He has said he will end Pakistan support for the US/NATO war and Kharzai regime, something that the people want, and quite frankly, thats all I care about in regards to foreign policy.
