Can anyone tell me about Abdul Rashid Dostum?

  • #2
Known for his reputed brutality, his pragmatic willingness to change sides and his support among fellow ethnic Uzbeks, he has been a charismatic player in Afghan politics for two decades.

The whisky-drinking former communist general had worked as a plumber before joining the army of Afghanistan's Soviet-backed regime in the late 1970s.

During the Russian occupation he led a 20,000-strong Uzbek militia force against the CIA-backed Mujahideen and was decorated by Moscow.

He continued to fight against the Mujahideen after Russian troops withdrew and it was his eventual defection from President Najibullah which triggered the collapse of the remnants of the Russian-backed regime.

He ruled six northern provinces centred in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif as Afghanistan fractured into warring fiefdoms controlled by former Mujahideen commanders.

During the years of chaotic civil war he repeatedly made and broke alliances with rival commanders. He also became known for holding public executions and reportedly told one journalist he crushed thieving soldiers by tying them to tanks tracks and driving around.
He fled to Turkey as the Taliban swept across the country in 1998, then returned to join the Northern Alliance which toppled the Taliban with US support after the September 11 attacks in 2001.
Some 2,000 Taliban prisoners who surrendered to his fighters were suffocated after being packed into steel shipping containers in the northern desert of Dasht-i-Laili.
Gen Dostum unsuccessfully ran for the Afghan presidency in 2004 and then held the post of military chief-of-staff.
He has been in unofficial exile since he allegedly kidnapped, beat and tortured a political rival last year, but now he has returned at the behest of President Hamid Karzai, who needs the votes of his Uzbek supporters to bolster his chances in Thursday's election.

Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

He's essentially the Uzbek version of Mullah Omar.

^hahahaha not really..Mullah Omar is fighting for an ideology (however wrong it may be)..but Dostum is fighting for greed of power + money.
By blood, we are immersed in love of you.
The youth lose their heads for your sake.
I come to you and my heart finds rest.
Away from you, grief clings to my heart like a snake.
I forget the throne of Delhi
when I remember the mountain tops of my Afghan land.
If I must choose between the world and you,
I shall not hesitate to claim your barren deserts as my own.

Dostum along with ismail khan, masoud, rabani, khalili etc brought destruction to afghanistan. They played the ethnic card and afghanistan still suffering from these criminals
On the other side pakistani sponsored Talibs brought extremism to afghanistan.
              Both sides are guilty.
This is what happen when a country fall into the hands of outsiders and criminals.
