Whatever the truth about the motives that led to her death, and may Allah grant mercy on all of us, the woman had a deep hand in the mess that Pakistan and Afghanistan have since had to face. And, this from a woman who like her father Bhutto Senior, used the banner of democracy when it suited and Islam when it suited.
It's all very deja vu especially considering that the baton of 'western educated, glamour politician with a youth following' is now being passed on to Imran Khan.
I don't think recognizing the Taliban as the government of Afghanistan as nurturing. In that regard, both Saudi Arabia and the UAE recognized the Taliban.
On the same token, Western nations are in fact imposing and propping up an illegal government in Kabul. They are doing this very openly.
Benazir had no choice but to recognize the inevitable government which came to power as a response to the crimes and infighting that plagued Afghanistan both during and after the war ended, a war which was brought about by militant communist activity.
However, as she returned, she promised a heavy handed war that would have further effected primarily Pashtuns. She also promised more cooperation with the West which was the reason why they supported and pushed forward her candidacy.
Many civilians have died as a result of these policies.
I can only imagine the intensity of her focus on FATA
And what it would have entailed. It would have been worse for Pashtuns than even now
I must admit, she was quite intelligent and well spoken as a teenager. I suppose this had a lot to do with her upbringing. Her interview battles with Zia at the time and the ensuing spat that occured were the equivalent of two heavy-weights in the ring and she held her footing quite well in that battle, even though she lost. So heaps of praise for her on that front.
She somewhat fell on her own sword by marrying Zardari who really moulded her and her government into an extortion racket. She didn't help herself when she became a bitter hag and pandered to the west in the vain hope that they might back her. They did, but she didn't get to feel her puppet strings pulled as it was too late.
She has a younger niece Fatima who has a kind of the antipathy for her dead aunt. You decide if it is a good/bad thing that she looks almost exactly like Benazir. The niece in fact was born in Kabul and has a maternal family that are Afghan political royalty.
She also frequently travels to Iran for her pilgrimage to Shiite shrines there.
I have nothing against Shiites, but this family takes Shiism to an occultist level.
The majority of the Zardari Administration is Shiite.
It's not that they actually care about the martyrdom of Sayyidina Hussein (ra) or what one can learn from it, they just want to differentiate themselves.
Three days before Benazir died, she had Ali written on her hand?
Now I can get into a whole new debate about this. Neither Ali(ra) or Hussein( ra ) were Shiites. The first set of Shiites actually arose from those who abandoned Sayyidina Hussein(ra) at Karbala, so the whole concept of their self flagellation is principally due to their own actions of abandoning him.
Benazir took open flaunting of "her" Shiite faith quite seriously.
I'm sure there is a reason that heavy weights in the Zardari Admin including Hussain Haqqani and Gilani are Shiite
I can never really figure it out because it's not like they are religious or something
