US-Pakistan may go to war in 2012

    Source: Dailybhaskar.com | Last Updated 15:04(10/12/11)

New Delhi: In 2012, the United States could face a major military conflict with Pakistan, an influential think-tank said on Friday.
According to the think-tank, the US-Pakistan war is likely to be triggered by a terror attack or due to U.S. counter-terror operations.
The Council on Foreign Relation’s Center for Preventive Action anonymously questioned government officials and experts and compiled a list of contingencies that could possibly occur in 2012.
The armed conflict with Pakistan is under Tier 1 category. This category lists contingencies that directly threaten the US, and which are likely to trigger U.S. military involvement.
US-Pakistan ties have hit an all-time low after an air strike by NATO killed 24 Pakistani soldiers last month.
The relationship between the two countries entered a testy phase after CIA operative Raymond Davis gunned down two armed men in Lahore, Pakistan in January this year.
The US raid on Abbottabad compound in May, in which fugitive al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden was killed, further soured relations as Pakistan was kept in the dark about the secret operation being carried out on its soil.
US has also accused Pakistan's spy agency ISI of having with the Haqqani network and other militant groups.
Washington has steadfastly maintained that Pakistan continues to coddle these terrorist groups, which are responsible for carrying out deadly strikes in the Afghanistan region.
Pakistan's intelligence agency has also been accused of providing strategic support to the Haqqani network, which for the recent attack on the US embassy in Afghanistan.
In retaliation to the NATO air strikes, Pakistan immediately closed down NATO supply lines and ordered US to vacate the Shamsi air base, reportedly used by CIA-operated drones, by December 11.
Pakistan Army chief Gen Ashfaq Parvez Kayani also gave his troops "full liberty" to respond to any further cross-border attacks by NATO forces in Afghanistan.
While, US has condoled the death of the soldiers, it has said it will continue its war on terrorism.
The fact that Pakistan has done little to allay US fears on ISI’s relationship with militants lends weight to the survey’s prediction.
The survey also predicts a civil-military crisis in Pakistan or terror attacks, which will lead to instability in Pakistan.

'Increasing risk of direct US-Pak confrontation'

'Increasing risk of direct US-Pak confrontation' - The Times of India

      PTI | Dec 10, 2011, 08.16PM IST

WASHINGTON: As US-Pak relations hit an all time low amidst Islamabad strengthening its air defence system, there is increasing risk of a direct military confrontation between the United States and Pakistan in the year 2012, while that of India-Pak decreases, an influential American think tank has said.

Preventive Priorities Survey (PPS) of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) lists instability in Pakistan and Saudi Arabia, an Iranian nuclear crisis, and an intensification of the European sovereign debt crisis among the most important international contingencies relative to US national interests.

Indeed this year US-Pakistani military confrontation replaces a Pakistani-Indo clash as a top ten contingency on the Preventive Priorities Survey.

"Survey respondents believed that the potential of an Indo-Pakistani conflict resulting from a replay of the 2008 Lashkar-e-Taiba Mumbai attack is increasingly unlikely.

"Correspondingly, relations between the United States and Pakistan have further deteriorated, and tens of thousands of US troops are stationed near the Afghan border with Pakistan," said CFR expert Micah Zenko said.

Zenko said despite providing over USD 22 billion in assistance since the attacks of September 11, 2001, the ability of the US to understand, much less improve, the internal situation in Pakistan is poor.

"Recognising the inherent limitations, the United States should continue to increase efforts to build counterterrorism capacity among civilian law enforcement and intelligence agencies in Pakistan, restructure financial assistance, and pursue cooperative efforts that emphasize mutual security threats and goals," he said.

America has always invaded militarily weak nations like vietnam, afghanistan and iraq. Except few thousands republican gaurds, rest of iraqi army was untrained. I dont think that US would directly confront one of the world's most professional army...They will just strike with air force and cruise misiles , pakistan would definately suffer....what will china do about attack on its israel?
Those westren afghans/pashtuns who are very happy with prospect of attack on pakistan, are forgetting that more than 3 million pashtuns live in pakistan. If they are giving excuse that with US attack pakistan would disintegrate and pashtun lands will be freed...then let me tell them that opposite will happen, i live among my people and i see them very angry against US. In case of attack most probably jihad will be declared and in war times sentiments of islam are at peak. Punjabi, pashtuns , sindhis and urduspeakers would forget their differences and will think as muslims and pakistanis...i am not trying to be zaid hamid, this happened in 1965 and 1971 war, many areas in khyber pakhtunkhwa were bombarded by indian air force, no one was out of his mind to love india at that times or hate punjabis during war times....US bombs and misiles wont distinguish between punjabi or pashtun, they wont recognize levanay zalmay's support for US against pakistan when his karachi will be under attack.

I think at this stage, Pakistans support for the US war is over

In the event that there is a US war with Pakistan or Iran or both for that matter, the US will fail due to both those nations offensive and defensive capabilities. At this stage, with a Pakistan readily wanting to have peace talks with TTP, the outcome for the US war in Afghanistan becomes more unfavorable

There are two scenarios, and both have the same result which is a US defeat in Afghanistan and the rest of the region.

If Iran is attacked, they will most certainly respond in Afghanistan and throughout the region

Work war 3 is not hysteria, but the end result of it will be the emergence of a new order that will belong to most Muslim nations

US decline as a world power is a fact

Not an opinion, and at this stage there is nothing that appears to be able to reverse it

one of the world's most professional army.

            Sahih International
O you who have believed, do not take the Jews and the Christians as allies. They are [in fact] allies of one another. And whoever is an ally to them among you - then indeed, he is [one] of them. Indeed, Allah guides not the wrongdoing people.

Pakistan – United States relations refers to the bilateral relationship between the Pakistan and the United States. The United States first established diplomatic relations with Pakistan on 20 October 1947. The relationship since then was based primarily on U.S. economic and military assistance to Pakistan.[1] Pakistan is a Major non-NATO ally of the United States. The United States is the second-largest supplier of military equipment to Pakistan after China and largest economic aid contributor as well

Pakistan is a major non-NATO ally as part of the War on Terrorism, and a leading recipient of U.S. aid
After the September 11 attacks in 2001 in the United States, Pakistan became a key ally in the war on terror with the United States. In 2001, U.S. President George W. Bush strongly encouraged Pakistan government to join the U.S. war on terror, as a result Pakistan joined the U.S. war. Pervez Musharraf acknowledges the payments received for captured terrorists in his book:
We've captured 689 and handed over 369 to the United States. We've earned bounties totaling millions of dollars
—Former President of Pakistan Pervez Musharraf
In 2003, the U.S. officially forgave US$1 billion in Pakistani debt in a ceremony in Pakistan as one of the rewards for Pakistan joining the U.S. war on terror
Pakistan is a major non-NATO ally as part of the War on Terrorism and provides key intelligence and logistical support for the United States .A leading recipient of U.S. military assistance, Pakistan expects to receive approximately $20 billion since 2001 a combination of reimbursement to Pakistan and training programs for the Pakistan counter terrorism units

Where is the jahad against the ones who sided with the enemies of the afghan people ? where is the uprising where is the anger , where is the islamic brotherhood

if pakistan is attacked if kufrabad is bombed and shattered into ashes , than its allahs will for their treason .

but i will tell you what will happen , very soon napakis will commit again treason as they did for decades , declare haqqani as an enemie and together with americans , start bombing pakthunkwa , like they did in the last 10 years .

for standing up there are no bones of people like luffy let alone the darkskinned daaleaters , they are slaves and as such they are known to do as their masters wish .

Its paradoxical, for all those supposed anti-Pakistan people, they actually support Pakistan's support for the US war and occupation of Afghanistan. Isn't that ironic?

They supported the Pakistan war against Swat and Waziristan, something Imran Khan was opposed to, and then they have the nerve to term Imran Khan an ISI stooge. He has been opposed to the US war and occupation of Afghanistan, as well as Pakistan's support for it for the last 7 years, even denying to be a part of Musharraf's government as a PM. Thats called principles.

Some favor another Pak operation on the tribal areas at the US request to secure an unreachable US victory in Afghanistan.

Its never ever going to happen.

There are two types of perspectives opposed to Pakistan. One perspective is opposed to Pakistan for Pakistan's continued support for the US war and occupation of Afghanistan. This perspective is based on both moral and logical grounds.

The second perspective which conflicts with the first is opposed to Pakistan for not doing enough to support the US war and occupation of Afghanistan. This would be the immoral and illogical one assumed by secular types who live in the West. Their perspective has no ground with Afghanistan and the entire region. They have no voice in the Arab spring, or more accurately the Islamic spring because lets be honest, the Muslim region is going to now have a bunch of Sharia governments.

They attempt to deny Afghans right to self-determination and independence by terming the Afghan insurgency as "terrorism." They use code words such as "paki" which really equates Afghan resistance and opposition to occupation and war.

However, despite all their alleged anti-Pakistan rhetoric, they are still in favor and content of Pakistan's current support for the US war and occupation with the supply routes and such. This is the only reason why they fear and oppose Imran Khan's escalating candidacy simply because he will/has ended it, and seeks to end the US presence in the region- a cornerstone of his foreign policy. This is why they favor such corrupt people like Zardari to stay in power.

They are opposed to the Pakistani Army for not being enough of a slave to the US.

              Isn't it ironic?

i dont think USA is stupid to attack pakistan.. USA may isolate pakistan in world arena and go for economic blockade along with its allies. USA may attack iran during 2012 and pakistan will remain neutral during iran war due to Saudi Pressure
