ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari had a mild attack of stroke causing internal bleeding in the brain and facial palsy (also known as facial paralysis), sources claim.
They, however, said all reports were so far completely clear and the president was stable and out of danger as the stroke and internal bleeding of the brain were not life threatening. However, he would require some treatment, including speech therapy, to resume his normal life.
According to one source, President Zardari is likely to be flown to London for detailed treatment. The source said that because of the stroke, Zardari had collapsed in the Presidency on Tuesday. The source claimed this despite official denials.
The government though did not precisely announce as to what had really happened to the president and instead continued issuing conflicting statements; The News has learnt from two different sources that President Zardari had a mild stroke that led to internal bleeding in the brain and facial palsy.
One of these sources quoted a presidential aide while the other claimed to have got this information from one of the doctors who attended and examined the president. President Zardari is a hypertensive (high blood pressure patient) and takes blood thinners. Such patients at times do experience a stroke, which in the case of the president was mild. In certain cases, it becomes fatal.
PML-N leader Javed Hashmi too had undergone a similar experience. His stroke was much more severe than the president, the sources said. It is unclear at this stage for how many days the president would remain hospitalised. Zardari had a stroke in the Presidency from where he preferred to fly to Dubai to get treatment at the American Hospital.
Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani has said he and Bilawal Bhutto Zardari had forced the president to fly to Dubai for treatment. After his meeting with Bilawal, the Prime Minister’s media team issued a press release stating that the president went to Dubai following symptoms related to his pre-existing heart condition.
The release did not explain what precisely happened to the president but said that after the initial medical tests in Dubai, doctors found him to be in stable condition. It, however, admitted that Zardari went to Dubai at the insistence of his children. It added that he will remain under observation and return to resume his normal functions as advised by the doctors.
President Zardari’s spokesman Farhatullah Babar, however, said on Wednesday that the president was in a Dubai hospital for routine medical tests and check-up.
His friend and his former physician Dr Asim and Zardari’s incumbent personal physician Col Salman, however, stated on Thursday that the proposed medical tests are of routine nature and are linked to a previously diagnosed cardiovascular condition.
Gilani’s cabinet member Mustafa Khokhar, however, had stated on Thursday that Zardari had a mild stroke but he simply disappeared after the statement and was not available on any television channel to offer further explanation.
