Two separate bomb blasts have hit Shia Muslim shrines in Afghanistan as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate the festival of Ashura, causing at least 34 casualties, according to Afghan police and media reports.
A security official speaking on condition of anonymity told the AFP news agency that a suicide bomber had detonated explosives at the gate of the shrine in Kabul on Tuesday morning, killing at least 30.
"A suicide bomber detonated his explosives in the Abu-Ul Fazil shrine," Kabul police said in a statement.
Four people were killed in a separate bombing on Tuesday, in the city of Mazar-i-Sharif.
A district police official said the dead there included at least one district police official. The bomb, which was carried on a bicycle, exploded near a mosque.
It was not immediately clear whether Shia were targeted in that attack.
"It was an explosion not a suicide bombing. It was some explosives hidden in a bicycle," Lal Mohammad Ahmadzai, a police spokesperson for northern Afghanistan, said, adding that four other people had also been injured.

Ashura is an auspicious day in the Muslim calendar that marks a number of significant events throughtout its history.

The blasts occurred as Shias gathered to carry out religious rituals to mark the day, a public holiday in Afghanistan.
Shia were banned from marking Ashura in public under the Taliban. This year, there are more Ashura monuments around the city than usual including black shrines and flags.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility for either of the blasts from the Taliban or other insurgent groups operating in Afghanistan.

The attacks came shortly after a major conference on Afghanistan's future, held in the German city of Bonn, 10 years after talks there which put in place an interim government after US-led troops ousted the Taliban.

However, Pakistan and the Taliban - both seen as pivotal to any end to the bloody strife in Afghanistan - decided to stay away from the talks, undermining already modest hopes for real progress.

Rare Attacks on Shiites Kill Scores in Afghanistan

Bryan Denton for The New York Times
A young Shiite boy waited outside the police cordon at the site of an attack in Kabul on Tuesday.

KABUL, Afghanistan — At least 58 people were killed and scores wounded after bombers struck Shiite religious observances on Tuesday in three cities, detonating explosives amid crowds of worshipers in the first such sectarian attacks in a decade of war in Afghanistan.

Two of the attacks — in Kabul, where dozens died, and in the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, where four were killed — were carried out by suicide bombers on foot. A third attack, in the southern city of Kandahar, used a bomb hidden on a parked motorcycle, but no one was killed.
Ghulam Sakhi Kargar, the spokesman for the Afghan Public Health Ministry, said 54 people were killed in the Kabul bombing and 164 wounded and admitted to hospitals. Gen. Abdul Zahair, the head of the criminal investigation division of the Kabul Police Department, put the death toll at 56 in Kabul, with similar numbers of wounded. Both officials said that many of the wounded were in very critical condition so the death toll may rise.
Shirjan Durani, the spokesman for the police chief in Mazar-i-Sharif, said that the attack there killed at least four civilians and wounded 20 others, although he said that attacker failed to disrupt the Ashura holiday celebrations there because of heavy security.
The Kandahar attack targeted a Shiite procession but missed it, wounding two policemen and three passersby, according to Kandahar Police Chief Abdul Razaq.
An e-mail message to news organizations from the spokesman for the Taliban, Zabiullah Mujahid, denied responsibility. “We strongly condemn this wild and inhuman act by our enemies, who are trying to blame us and trying to divide Afghans by doing such attacks on Muslims.”
All past suicide attacks in Afghanistan have been attributed to the Taliban insurgents or allied groups like the Haqqani network and al Qaeda. There have been no known suicide attacks by other parties to the conflict.
While Afghanistan’s Shiite minority community, mostly ethnic Hazaras, were savagely discriminated against during the years of Taliban rule, they had not been singled out for attack during the current insurgency. Unlike neighboring Pakistan, where sectarian violence is rampant between Shiite and Sunni groups, there had been little such conflict in Afghanistan.
Ashura is the day on which Shiite Muslims honor the death of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the Prophet Muhammad. Although it has long been a public holiday in Afghanistan, ceremonies were more visible this year than in the past.
In Kabul, the suicide bomber was apparently among a procession of worshipers outside one of the main Shiite mosques, the Abul Fazal Abbas shrine in the Murad Khani neighborhood, close to the finance and defense ministries, when he detonated an explosive vest. The mosque was damaged by the blast.
The worshipers were beating their chests to show their sorrow at Imam Hussein’s martyrdom, with some of them also flagellating themselves, using barbed chains to beat themselves on the back.
“The explosion took place inside the crowd,” said a wounded man, Said Zaki, 18, whose face and clothes were covered in blood. “We didn’t see who this person was but he was definitely on foot. We saw 30 or 40 people on the ground missing arms and limbs.”
The deadly attacks followed an international conference on Afghanistan in Bonn, Germany, on Monday that had been viewed as a milestone that would cement progress in ending the war, both politically and militarily. But the conference fell considerably short of the objectives that officials had envisioned, underscoring the multiple challenges facing a government undermined by corruption and threatened by a tenacious insurgency.
Sangar Rahimi contributed reporting from Kabul, and Taimoor Shah from Kandahar.

Pakistani based millitant group Lashkar e Jhangavi took responsibility for it.
I am not anti pakistani but when these sort of things happen, i can sympathize with those who hate pakistan.

just condemn the killings and pray for the dead. is that too much to ask? or are you happy some rafidis got killed?

close to the city of Kandahar as i got it,

And brother Badmaskhel...lets open your mind

first are there any proofs that suggest ,that it was a suicide attack?

second i do not have seen across the islamic forums any one claiming responsibility.

i may against shias but i disagree with such crimes.

and therefore the islamic emirate of Afghanistan condemned this attack.

my suggesting is going more to those elements controlling it,the ANA and US Contractors could be behind this, but they forget that there are less than 10 % shia in afghanistan,in case of sectarian violence , it will take the sunnis to eat the shias in less than one week all alive without cooking them.

No Muslim group was behind this.

It is obvious who did this. black water is known for these types of remote controlled operations.

Secondly, these bomb attacks happened in Iraq and Pakistan too

Its valid to oppose Pakistan for supporting the US war , but blaming ever other thing on Pakistan, it's getting stupid . The intention of these attacks appear to have been to divide Afghans. This will not happen, and it may already be realized which foreigners are behind this

They have unfortunately been most common in Iraq. It has been proven that the invadors (americans) and zionist and iranians agents were behind many of the bombs. In fact they started it. Now it is an evil cyclus.

The same is happening in Afghanistan and Pakistan. We should be aware of those evil forces who want to harm the Ummah.

Lashkar e janghvi has been defunct for a while

Another made up group is the Datta Khel TTP and their made up commander Asif Afridi

In June, there was a market blast in Peshawar. Pakistan Taliban denied responsibility, and after that this unknown "faction" under the so called leadership of someone called Asif Afridi claimed responsibility.

                      Asif Afridi does not exist

                      black water was behind that

And is behind this attack today

Exactly they attached in some cases bombs to mental ill people who were retard and they were placed in markets, mosques and where many civilians were present to ruin the name of the islamic resistance.

and in some cases they placed carbombs and other tactics...as we have witnessed from the enemies in pakistan,
where Blackwater used remote controlled mines, car bombs, even some of their members were observing it.

One of the Blackwater members was killed by a taliban sniper who was observing such attacks.

KABUL, Dec 6 (Reuters) - The Taliban condemned bomb attacks in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-i-Sharif, that killed at least 52 people on Tuesday, as the brutal work of "enemies", a spokesman for the insurgent group said.
"Very sadly we heard that there were explosions in Kabul and Mazar-i-Sharif, where people were killed by the enemy's un-Islamic and inhuman activity," Zabihullah Mujahid said in an emailed statement
"The Islamic Emirate strongly condemns such a cruel, indiscriminate and un-Islamic attack," the statement added, using the name by which insurgent group refers to itself.

If you didnt know, the Taliban massacred many Shias in the Hazara communities in Afghanistan. Not only did the Taliban kill many innocent Shia's, they took Hazara women as prize war booty.

Everyone knows this fact. Taliban with the Punjabi SSP have wreck havoc across Pakhtunkhwa by attacking innocent Shias in DI Khan and Kurram agency.

This attack has the hallmark of the Taliban or maybe the Punjabi Taliban.

Its nothing new or a suprise.
