  • The CIA's Intervention in Afghanistan

    Interview with Zbigniew Brzezinski,
President Jimmy Carter's National Security Adviser

Le Nouvel Observateur, Paris, 15-21 January 1998
    Posted at globalresearch.ca 15 October 2001

Question: The former director of the CIA, Robert Gates, stated in his memoirs ["From the Shadows"], that American intelligence services began to aid the Mujahadeen in Afghanistan 6 months before the Soviet intervention. In this period you were the national security adviser to President Carter. You therefore played a role in this affair. Is that correct?

Brzezinski: Yes. According to the official version of history, CIA aid to the Mujahadeen began during 1980, that is to say, after the Soviet army invaded Afghanistan, 24 Dec 1979. But the reality, secretly guarded until now, is completely otherwise Indeed, it was July 3, 1979 that President Carter signed the first directive for secret aid to the opponents of the pro-Soviet regime in Kabul. And that very day, I wrote a note to the president in which I explained to him that in my opinion this aid was going to induce a Soviet military intervention.

Q: Despite this risk, you were an advocate of this covert action. But perhaps you yourself desired this Soviet entry into war and looked to provoke it?

B: It isn't quite that. We didn't push the Russians to intervene, but we knowingly increased the probability that they would.

Q: When the Soviets justified their intervention by asserting that they intended to fight against a secret involvement of the United States in Afghanistan, people didn't believe them. However, there was a basis of truth. You don't regret anything today?

B: Regret what? That secret operation was an excellent idea. It had the effect of drawing the Russians into the Afghan trap and you want me to regret it? The day that the Soviets officially crossed the border, I wrote to President Carter. We now have the opportunity of giving to the USSR its Vietnam war. Indeed, for almost 10 years, Moscow had to carry on a war unsupportable by the government, a conflict that brought about the demoralization and finally the breakup of the Soviet empire.

Q: And neither do you regret having supported the Islamic fundamentalism, having given arms and advice to future terrorists?

B: What is most important to the history of the world? The Taliban or the collapse of the Soviet empire? Some stirred-up Moslems or the liberation of Central Europe and the end of the cold war?

Q: Some stirred-up Moslems? But it has been said and repeated Islamic fundamentalism represents a world menace today.

B: Nonsense! It is said that the West had a global policy in regard to Islam. That is stupid. There isn't a global Islam. Look at Islam in a rational manner and without demagoguery or emotion. It is the leading religion of the world with 1.5 billion followers. But what is there in common among Saudi Arabian fundamentalism, moderate Morocco, Pakistan militarism, Egyptian pro-Western or Central Asian secularism? Nothing more than what unites the Christian countries.

You just quoted my post. So from one side of your mouth, you ask me to provide evidence while refusing to provide your own, and then from the other side of your mouth you quote my own postings, because you are too lazy to do any of your own work. Good job, man.

And so in quoting my post, you're basically giving tacit recognition of my point to Khushal that some people are foolish enough to allow their community to be used - like those who allow themselves to be used by Pakistan.

          eh

just goes to show u that afghans should be fighting for their own interests instead of americas, pakistans, indias, irans, or any others. there will always be strings directing this 30 yr civil war unless afghans can get their heads out their hairy asses.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Yeah, but he's got his head buried so deep, he can't get out of his denial.

I think this guy is just a loyal Pakistani fundamentalist who couldn't care less about being honest with himself or anyone else. I think he knows what's really going on, but he's just too crooked to care. For him, everything's just an exercise in dodging and weaving.

He doesn't care about reality - he just cares about his imaginary world. Moral, ethnical or practical concerns are meaningless to him.

Firstly, i cannot be a Pakistani because both of my parents are Pashtun from Kandahar.
Secondly, you seem incapable of providing genuine evidence to back up your claims, and always attack me as a diversion.
Thirdly, this interview i posted is a genuine and authentic.
Fourthly, please avoid the personal attacks and critique my posts.
Lastly, I am not a loyal Pakistani agent.

you clearly missed the whole point of the posts in that thread. Please stay in one thread and debate me there rather than follow me around and make accusations without even providing a link for others to read.

I wish we could have a whole thread devoted to this man.

Brzezinski is not one man by himself. He has a large following.

But he has attracted the scorn of many Americans too, because immediately after 9-11 attacks he began defending Taliban, and said that perhaps another similar attack could be staged on US soil again in the future - by the US govt! When he said that, many Americans felt betrayed, and they wondered which side this man was on.

The answer is that he is of course on his own side - the side of his true motherland, where he was born. He simply used the US to serve his agenda.

Even before the 9-11 attacks, Brzezinski wrote a book called The Grand Chessboard, in which he describes in detail the need to manipulate the entire Eurasian continent, using Afghanistan in particular as a fulcrum.

Just because the evidence you provide is weak, doesn't mean i'm looking for an alibi to excuse the taliban.

                            and Shame?

You are the one who makes accusations after accusations and yet provide no proof..to back your accusations. You are being very dishonest and unislamic.
