  • Taliban did not kill Afghan president's brother: NATO

(Reuters) - The man who killed the influential half brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai three months ago carried out the attack for personal reasons and was not a Taliban fighter, a senior NATO official said Saturday.

Investigations following the death of Ahmad Wali Karzai at his Kandahar home in July showed that the employee who killed him had learned he would be disciplined for misconduct and shot Karzai to avoid being publicly shamed, the official said.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the killing, as part of a string of high-profile assassinations in recent months that underlined their reach even as a surge of foreign troops made gains in their southern heartlands.

Other victims have included former president and government peace envoy Burhanuddin Rabbani, a top police commander for the north, and the governor of Kunduz province. The NATO official did not question the Taliban's role in these other killings.

"It was a murder, not an assassination," the NATO official said of Karzai's killing, in a briefing to unveil NATO statistics showing a fall in Taliban attacks. "It wasn't politically motivated and it wasn't an insurgent masterstroke."

The NATO official said the killer, a guard force commander who ran checkpoints in the Kandahar area, had been reported to Karzai for his alleged mistreatment of local people.

    INFILTRATION CLAIMS QUESTIONED

The official also played down Taliban claims that insurgent fighters and sympathizers were behind attacks by Afghan police or soldiers on foreign troops mentoring or working with them, that have killed dozens in recent years.

"This is a gun culture, we've studied infiltrations and in the majority of cases there are no Taliban ties ... insurgents will always claim every attack," the official said.

In the majority of "rogue" attacks, the gunmen were suffering from stress due to personal problems and had no connection with the Taliban.

Some insurgents acquired police or army uniforms to evade security when targeting Afghans and foreigners, but were not actually members of the security forces, he added.

Over the first nine months of the year, insurgent attacks using improvised explosive devices (IEDs) rose 6 percent compared with the same period of 2010, but the overall number of attacks by insurgents fell around 8 percent over the same period, the official said.

ISAF intelligence suggested they had switched to using roadside bombs to avoid losses on the battlefield and were fully aware that more civilian casualties would be incurred.

Many insurgents were unable to pull off most of the attacks their leaders had called for, the official added.

"There's a disconnect between what they said they wanted to do and what they were actually able to do," he said. He conceded however that the Taliban was a "adaptable and resilient" and gains made by coalition forces could easily be undone.

"This is progress, it's real progress, but I still classify it as fragile," he said. "If we don't continue the pressure, it will be reversible and durability will be in question."

Data compiled by the United Nations, however, showed a sharp rise in security incidents and higher numbers of civilian casualties over the first eight months of the year.

But then why did Taliban claim responsibility? If they are always claiming responsibility for everything, then what does it say about them? It shows how desperate they are, and how lying is second nature for them.

Perhaps you are confusing the Rabbani killing with the killing of Ahmad Wali Karzai.

i am pretty sure the bomb in turban story comes from associates of rabbani who were on the scene.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

well he kind of was the superman/power broker of kandahar.

if the taliban can kill such a head honcho like him, then why not his successor?

if the taliban can down a helicopter, which was actually legit, why cant they keep doing the same thing even after claiming they have new weaponry to do it?

Because Taliban say anything - and their desperate supporters will try to spin that in any direction that suits their needs.

Someone needs to update George Orwell's 1984 or Animal Farm to parody the Taliban.

sherzai has carved out his own kingdom in nangarhar. his reputation is much higher there than in kandahar where there are bad memories of him. i am guessing he would rather stay in nangarhar where he has more new friends than in kandahar where he has the same amount of old enemies.

as for who the head honcho in kandahar was, it was karzai, who treated kandahar like steve jobs treated apple, except with torture and corruption.

not that i care about this karzai, i actually prefer him meeting his maker by the hands of one of his own corrupt guards than that of a taliban bomb.

the bulldozer is really hot ^^ sherzai spent his youth in the cinemas his father was the pashah of sagbazi in khandahar in the 50s and 60s .

but he is very capable and smart !!! what you can not say about the rest , the reason why karzai sent him to jalalabad is that he became too popular in khandahar and karzai feared that he will be finally replace him and his brothers familiy in khandahar .

he took alot of people into his services which were in the past civil servants , i mean real ones educated ones not the ones who can barely read and write .

and they are protected by him , otherwise som idiots would just kill them in the name of being communists etc. ,so his success rellies on people who survived the war and have atleast som degree of knowledge and a profession

and he steals not soo much like the others .

i could bet that will he be president , if they want to dispose karzai ,or finally arrange a peace deal .

Suggestions of the Islamic Emirate to the Rulers of the Kabul Administration on the occasion of Assassination of Ahmad Wali Karzai
                        Tuesday, 19 July 2011 15:11 -

In the Name of Allah, the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful

The other day, Ahmad Wali Karzai, half brother of the Head of the Kabul surrogate Regime was killed by martyr Sardar Mohammad who was in contact with the Muahideen. A. Wali Karzai was leader of the Provincial Council and worked as kingpin of the regime in south Afghanistan. He was the most trusted person close to the invading forces in south Afghanistan. Cooperating with the Americans, Canadians and Britons for the control of the south-west zone, he played key role in spreading the net of intelligence of the Western invaders and boosting their sway in south-west Afghanistan. Even now, he received high salary from CIA.

During his reign in the past few years, Kandahar and adjacent areas, like any other part of the country, born the brunt of atrocities of the foreign invading troops, in assistance with the domestic Afghan hireling forces. During this period, a great number of people were martyred, detained or forced to leave their homes and hertz on charges of being opposed to the presence of the invaders. Even many villages and orchards were destroyed and government/private properties usurped in Kandahar. No doubt, in all these crimes, Ahmand Wali Karzai was complicit as a first person responsible in the province. But the miserable and broken situation of the oppressed people readily came to a culmination that the Almighty Allah took an exemplary revenge on the oppressor. Now, Ahmad Wali Karzai has received his punishment.

Those Afghans who cooperate with the invading forces in Afghanistan in contravention of their religion, country and indigenous values, should take a lesson from the incident that happened the other day. They should reconsider their demeanor and actions and should know these people (Afghans) are religious and patriotic. No one of them is ready to tolerate cooperation with and presence of the foreign infidel invaders on this soil. If these subservients maintain to protect themselves from open offensives of Mujahideen by dent of barbed wires, cemented walls, sand sacks and foreign forces, they will never protect themselves from the said revenge of the believing people. Sooner or later, each of them will meet the fate.

The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan calls on those Afghans who work in the ranks of the invaders of Afghanistan, particularly, this call is directed at those influential, educated and experienced Afghans to rethink and abandon their subservience to the non-believing invaders. Stand with your people and support the Mujahideen. If you are not able to do this, then at least leave the support of the non-believers and start ordinary life. With all these, if you are intent on continuing your submissive work, then every one of you will meet the same like general Doud and Ahmad Wali Karzai, with the help of Allah, the All-powerful. You will face loss in this world and in the world to come.

                        Ponder, o men of understanding!

                        The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan

So-called "muslim" - your Taliban claim responsibility for everything. By deliberately mixing religion into their politics (that is their whole formula) they are only bringing down their religion.

You claim to have shot down a Chinook, but the people who shot it down were soon killed. So they didn't live to brag about their action.

You only know how to measure victories by people killed - but how many victories have you scored by saving people from starvation, or giving them jobs, or healing the sick? What record do you have to brag about there?

As a result of the Afghan War, everybody around the world was liberated from communism. So everybody in the world got liberation except the Afghans themselves.
Your Pakistani masters are laughing all the way to the bank. Meanwhile, so many Afghans/Pashtuns are living in deprivation. So what victory are you bragging of?

When so many countries around the world are graduating large numbers of youth from college, to enter the workforce and build up their countries, Afghanistan is torn by civil war and suffering. What victory can you brag about in comparison to this?

Why are you pretending to be smug and boastful? What do you have to boast about?

I have a university degree, I have a decent job, I'm able to take care of myself and my family. What are you able to do? What do you find worth bragging about?

Why don't you stop acting like a juvenile delinquent and grow up? Why are you incapable of understanding the important things in life, and instead only living vicariously through a bunch of bearded illiterates who can't even read? (I'm sorry if using big words like 'vicariously' makes it hard for you to understand what I'm saying.)

Instead of praising illiterate fools who can't make a living except by smuggling drugs, why don't you find something better to do with your time, and figure out how to make a better living for yourself and your family?

Other people are living life - and meanwhile you are letting life pass you by. And then you're sitting behind a keyboard thinking how great and godly you are. Real God-fearing people earn for their families. Only overgrown idiots run around the countryside playing hide-and-seek, and think themselves great for it.

This whole article does not make sense. Why would he kill Wali Karzai, whose death would bring his own life to an end and also his family's and kins life into danger just because he did not want to be disciplined. It does not make sense.

they are all confused on what happened and they bring us this lame excuse.
