  • American base attacked in Panjshir Afghanistan

15 October 2011 Last updated at 05:49 GMT Afghanistan militants attack US base in Panjshir

Militants have launched a suicide attack on a US base in eastern Afghanistan but failed to breach the outside gate.
The four militants were all killed in the attack on the base in the Rakha district of the Panjshir region, officials said.
There are unconfirmed reports two Afghan drivers were also killed.
The compound serves as the base for a provincial reconstruction team - a mix of military and civilian personnel.
The Taliban said they carried out the attack.
The militants struck the gate of the base with rocket-propelled grenades and detonated a vehicle containing explosives.
    Two security guards were wounded.
Provincial police chief Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh told Agence France-Presse that two drivers bringing fuel to the base had been killed.
Nato confirmed the attack but said there were no US deaths or injuries.
"There was a complex attack attempted, but it was repelled," spokeswoman Capt Ebony Calhoun said.
Foreign troops are scheduled to leave Afghanistan by 2014, handing over control of security to Afghan forces.
Separately, a US drone strike along the Afghan border area late on Friday killed four militants in Baghar, 40km (25 miles) west of Wana, the main town of Pakistan's South Waziristan region, Pakistani officials said.

Two drivers bringing fuel to a US base in northern Panjshir province were killed on Saturday during an attack on the base, Afghan officials said.

Four militants attacked the US-led Provincial Reconstruction Team facility, which accommodates a mix of military and civilian personnel. Three of the attackers approached on foot while shooting weapons, while a fourth detonated his explosives-laden vehicle outside the gate in Rakha district of Panjshir, provincial Governor Karamudin Karim said.

Two security guards were also injured in the attack, Mr Karim added.

The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack.

Nato confirmed the incident, saying there were no US deaths or injuries.

The attack in the normally peaceful province of Panjshir comes a day after a suicide bombing in southern Afghanistan that killed three Afghan border policemen and wounded a child. The bomber blew up his explosives-packed car on Friday evening as it was being inspected at a checkpoint.

Afghan, U.S. forces repel Taliban raid on NATO base

By Sayed Salahuddin, Saturday, October 15, 9:06 AM

KABUL — Afghan and U.S. troops foiled a complex attack by Taliban insurgents against a NATO-led base Saturday in Panjshir Valley in eastern Afghanistan, one of the few secure regions that so far has remained free of militants’ strikes.
Armed with hand grenades, anti-tank rockets and assault rifles, a group of five attackers including at least two suicide bombers launched the pre-dawn raid on the base, perched in the foot of a hill near the only main road in the twisting valley.

There were no casualties among U.S. military troops and American civil personnel running the base in Rakha district of Panjshir province, but two Afghan drivers supplying fuel for the base were killed in the clash, provincial authorities and a spokesman for the NATO-led troops said.
“There was a complex attack attempted, but it was repelled,” NATO spokeswoman Capt. Ebony Calhoun told the Associated Press. She said the guards’ wounds were not life-threatening but they had been evacuated to a larger U.S. base for treatment.
The AP reported that the Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack in a text message.
Two Afghans guarding the base were wounded and its main entrance was damaged by a massive car bomb used in the initial round of the attack by a suicide bomber.
Four other assailants, dressed as athletes, hurled hand grenades and rockets at a tower of the base, sparking a clash that lasted for nearly half an hour. NATO-led forces had to use air power to repel the attack, an official said.
While insurgents in the past have unleashed a number of similar attacks against foreign troops and Afghan government in various parts of the country, Saturday’s raid was rare in its kind in Panjshir, the only few secure areas of Afghanistan.
The valley served as the main “unconquerable” stronghold of the anti-Taliban alliance that helped the U.S. troops drive out the Taliban from power in 2001.
The attack came as a surprise to Afghans and foreign forces with Panjshir’s governor saying an investigation was launched to determine how the attackers were able to penetrate into the valley.
“A team has come from Kabul for assessing this incident. We are trying to establish how the attackers came here and were able to conduct such a raid,” Gov. Keramuddin Keram said by phone.
Though a former stronghold of the anti-Taliban Islamists, Panjshir is largely conservative and some of its people have regularly voiced anger about the 10-year-long presence of foreign troops and Western policies in Afghanistan.

Militants have attacked a US base in Afghanistan's northeastern province of Panjshir, killing two Afghan drivers and injuring two Afghan security forces, Press TV reports.

On Saturday, militants hit a security tower using a rocket-propelled grenade and detonated an explosives-laden vehicle outside the base located in the district of Rakha, provincial Police Chief General Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh said.

The Afghan police commander said that there was some damage to the base.

The Afghan drivers who were killed in the incidnet were reportedly taking fuel supplies to the base when they came under attack.

The Taliban have accepted responsibility for the attack, and their spokesman Zabihulla Mojahid claimed that many US forces were killed in the incident.

All the four attackers, one driving the vehicle and three on foot, were killed while two Afghan security guards sustained injuries.

NATO Spokeswoman Capt. Ebony Calhoun confirmed the incident, adding no US forces were killed or injured in the assault.

US base in eastern Afghanistan attacked
Four attackers killed and two guards wounded in assault on US base in normally peaceful eastern province, officials say.

    Last Modified: 15 Oct 2011 07:22

The attack was the first time since the US invasion that a suicide bomber had struck in Panjshir province Armed attackers have attempted to blast their way into an American base in eastern Afghanistan, striking before dawn with rocket-propelled grenades and a vehicle packed with explosives.
The attackers failed to breach the gate of the base in Panjshir province's Rakoha district, though they did hit a security tower with a rocket-propelled grenade, a local police chief said on Saturday.
Three of the men attacked on foot, shooting, while a fourth detonated the explosives-laden vehicle outside the gate, General Mohammad Qasim Jangalbagh said. All four attackers were killed and two Afghan security guards were wounded, he said.
It was the first time in 10 years of war since a US-led invasion that a suicide bomber has struck Panjshir, the Reuters news agency reported. The Taliban claimed responsibility and said the bombers were Panjshir natives.
A NATO spokeswoman confirmed the attack but said there were no American deaths or injuries and no significant damage to facilities.
Panjshir is one of the provinces that transferred control over security affairs from American to Afghan hands this year.
"It comes as a surprise, because this is a very peaceful part of [Afghanistan], and security is very tight here," Al Jazeera's Jennifer Glasse said. "Security guards at the entrance to the valley said they don't understand how this happened, and that maybe the attackers came from the other end of the valley" opposite the capital Kabul, our correspondent said.
"There was a complex attack attempted, but it was repelled,'' Capt. Ebony Calhoun said. She said the guards' wounds were not life-threatening but they had been evacuated to a larger US base for treatment.
The base houses a provincial reconstruction team, a mix of military and international civilians who work to improve provincial governance, services and infrastructure.
The attack in Panjshir comes a day after a suicide bombing in southern Afghanistan that killed three Afghan border police officers and one civilian.
The bomber blew up his explosives-packed car Friday afternoon while it was being inspected at a checkpoint.
The explosion happened in Spin Boldak, near the Pakistani border, in the early evening, said Gen. Abdul Raziq, the head of the border police in the south.
The checkpoint had been set up because of an intelligence warning that an attack was imminent, a provincial government spokesman said.
Three NATO service members were also killed Friday in separate attacks, according to statements from the military alliance, taking the number of international soldiers killed this month to 11 and at least 464 since the beginning of the year.

Since Panjshir is Masood's home district, I don't think there is much Taliban support there.
