Response of Amir al-Mu'minin Mullah Mohammed Omar to the questions of Al-Jazeera.net
This a transcript for the audio speech of Amir al-Mu’minin Mullah Mohammed Omar that was sent to Al-Jazeera.net, answering written questions that were sent to him. The recording was dated to 2001, during the rule of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan, before the American invasion of Afghanistan.

Dear respected,
Answering your questions won’t have great importance, because it would normal for the person to answer the questions of the questioner for his own interest. So if it was from his interest to answer with negatively, he will deny, and if it was in its interest to answer positively, he does so. But I will say words that you might find the answer of some of your questions, which will have cues and advice for the rest of the believers.

نحمده ونستعينه ونستغفره ونؤمن به ونتوكل عليه، ونصلي على رسوله الكريم،.. أما بعد،
I respected brothers will explain to you in detail and brief some of my biography, and what I have done of deeds, to take a lesson and Itti’az. Even if the lessons and Itti’az are originally from the Quran to that who Wants to scrutinize and ponder it… There is no cues better than it.
Despite this I say to you some of what I have:
Childhood and education:
I experienced orphanhood at an early age, when I was three years old, then I was raised by my uncles. I received religious education from childhood until I reached 18 or 19 years old.
When the communists did coup I participated in the jihad against them, after they went out from Afghanistan, I returned once again to continue my religious studies, in a Madrassa that we have established in our Jihadi center.
Emergence of the Taliban movement:
But the government of the Mujahidin which took over ruling the country after toppling communism, ended to what has been known and seen by the whole world.
Due to the internal wars between the Jihadi organizations, there was no ruler or government in Afghanistan. Chaos stroke the life of the people, and the Muslims suffered from the calamities and hardships, and corruption and injustice spread in the country and people were overwhelmed with catastrophes and hardships. I thought to search for companions, that are sincere to Allah in their worshiping, and having enthusiasm to jihad and pain for the situation of Islam, because such people can bare the hardships, and be steadfast in jihad for the sake of Allah. So I searched for them among the students of knowledge, and offered to them to do the obligation of changing the evils and lifting the injustice over the Muslims, so some of them agreed with me and accompanied me on this path.
We immediately began to act, and didn’t think about the scarceness of our numbers and weakness and not even about the food that we need, since there is a promise from Allah the most high, to those who aid His religion, that Allah will aid them with His power. So we kept our dependence and reliance on Allah. We began the work and we results were positive, and we reached to this end.
Who is behind the Taliban?
Now the whole world knows what is happening in Afghanistan, and know how were the conditions previously, and how is it now. These words are only understood by the people of the Aqeeda, but others won’t believe it, they even say that we are a political organization, like we have some one behind us, or how could we accomplish all these works in a short time, and few capabilities, and save a whole country from the evil and fitna, and succeed in this great confrontation!
The issue as I say, that this is not far or difficult for the capability of Allah the most high, since Allah aids and supports who devotes himself to serve the religion of Allah, and all that we did and do is from our religious obligation.
Stance of the Taliban from the embargo:
Regarding placing the embargo on us by Russia and America, that’s not a new thing, the embargo was placed on the messenger of Allah (peace and blessing of Allah upon him) for the same reasons that the embargo is placed on us now.
We will deal with this embargo as the Messenger of Allah did, nothing more and nothing less. The Muslims has to be patient over their religion and do their responsibilities which has been kept on them by Allah. Islam is not served with lying.
The Taliban and extremism:
Regarding what America and Russia is saying about extremists, we are not like that, overuse and negligence both of them are hated in Islam. Then overuse and negligence are determined by a Muslim who knows Islam, but the Kaffir who can he determine overuse and negligence in the matters of Islam?! This isn’t reasonable, its mere words that they say.
And who doubts our actions can come to us, and observe our actions closely, then present that on the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of Allah (peace and blessing of Allah upon him), so if we were on the straight path of the Islamic Sharia, then this is our path, and we won’t divert from it. And if it happens and we diverted we won’t be real Muslims, we will be only Muslims in our names.
But this is time, is the time of the media, who has many media outlets will find listening ears and acceptance of his works among the people, but our media outlets are few and limited and we depend on the support of Allah to us, and we didn’t go much to the media.
The source of the power of the Taliban:
The Taliban movement and system has a spiritual power and moral affect, look at Russia and America, it never happened in history that Russia and America were united in a stance in fighting a small state like Afghanistan, despite of the big differences between them, but they stood in one trench against Afghanistan and the Taliban movement. From that it appears that the Taliban have moral and spiritual power that scares Russia and America, all that they spread about us is a mere lie. In fact they fear from the affect of that spiritual and moral power. But our confidence in Allah and our reliance and entrust is big, even if the whole world stood against us we won’t leave our principles and believes and won’t divert from our march Insha’Allah, because what he believe in is our religion and we won’t leave it, because leaving our religion is similar to death of a Muslim. The real death of the Muslim is leaving or scorning his religion, or leaving working with it regulations, and the virtual death is nothing if compared with the religious death. If we wanted life, then our holding of our religion is the life, and if there wasn’t any life so let it be death, and death is a cup that everyone will drink from it.
So every Muslim has to reform himself, and be eager on the matters of his religion, and strengthen his belief in his Lord, then he will triumph and succeed in the Dunya and hereafter.
Future of the Taliban:
What I have mentioned about my personal life, childhood and orphanhood, and where our matter have reached, are all words that benefit the people of the Aqeeda and take advantage from it. Those who have proper minds must be aware that these matters are divine decrees, and Allah is able and nothing makes Him incapable, and He does what he wants.
Our future also is based on what we believe in.
What Allah decreed and wrote will be on us. The Americans and Russians won’t be able to do anything, or we won’t be able to do anything. It’s all divine decrees under the ability and vision of Allah, since this isn’t our work or the work of America in regarding the succeed or failure of what we’re doing, or what we hope. These are words that cannot be understood by a Kaffir, or who doesn’t have the Aqeeda of Eman.
The Muslims should be aware to the orders of their Lord that were mentioned in the noble Book, and they should seek to have an end on the religion of Allah. My words are all a cues and lessons for myself and the Muslims, and I have nothing more from that I mentioned.. I leave you in the Allah’s care.
