Record 46.2 million Americans live in poverty, Census Bureau says - latimes.com

High joblessness and the weak economic recovery pushed the ranks of the poor in the U.S. to 46.2 million in 2010 -- the fourth straight increase and the largest number of people living in poverty since record-keeping began 52 years ago, the Census Bureau reported Tuesday.
The share of all people in the U.S. who fell below the poverty line rose to 15.1% last year from 14.3% in 2009. That matched the poverty rate reached in 1993 before falling steadily to 11.3% in 2000. Since then the poverty rate has risen, accelerating after the recession began in late 2007, and is now approaching levels not seen since Lyndon B. Johnson launched the War on Poverty in 1965.
Last year the share of children under 18 living in poverty jumped to 22%, from 20.7% the previous year.
The Census Bureau’s report also showed an increase in the number of people without healthcare coverage rose to 49.9 million last year from 49 million in 2009, though the percentage of uninsured was statistically unchanged. And there was a further erosion of incomes at the middle of the middle class.
Inflation-adjusted median household income in the U.S. fell 2.3% in 2010 from a year ago, to $49,445.
Taken together, the data all point to the severe and widespread financial strains of a nation in the throes of an economic crisis. And the report, coming shortly after President Obama’s proposed package of $447 billion in tax cuts and spending to revive job growth and the recovery, is almost certain to intensify the debate over the government’s role in helping the poor and unemployed at a time of budget deficits and painful cutbacks in public services. Extended federal unemployment benefits, for example, helped some people rise above the poverty line.
Analysts had widely expected the poverty rate for last year to edge higher, given that the nation’s unemployment rate averaged 9.6% in 2010 compared with 9.3% the previous year. The latest jobless figure, for August, was 9.1%.
By the Census Bureau’s latest measure, the poverty threshold last year was an income of $11,139 for one person and $22,314 for a family of four.
The government’s official poverty rate doesn’t count food-stamp benefits and low-income tax credits as income. If those programs, which totaled about $150 billion last year, were included, many more people would have been counted as being above the poverty line.
At the same time, analysts say other factors understate the real level of poverty in the U.S. Many more young adults have stayed or moved back home because they can’t find jobs, and others have doubled up with friends and relatives. Moreover, experts agree that the poverty thresholds, designed in the early 1960s, doesn’t capture people’s spending and living needs in today’s economy.

lets not forget that what is considered poverty here would be like upper middle class in a place like afghanistan.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

This article is about growing poverty in the United States.

Secondly, what you said is so far from the truth, you apparently seem to be unaware of high number of people that have lost their homes due to default on haraam mortgages, and as a result, are either serial renters, or homeless.

Many are unemployed, and unemployment benefits don't even suffice for survival. Studies have shown that this increasing poverty will correlate with an increase in unrest and violence.

Poverty is poverty. Consider when people are worried about whether or not they will have a dinner, and government programs like food stamps only last for a certain period of time for people- this type of poverty is then same everywhere.

actually, alcohol use becomes more rampant with an increase in poverty in these type of societies. It is a method to escape the looming depression for those without faith.

poverty does not equal poverty when it comes to different nations.

the UN classifies poverty lines in different countries, for example in afghanistan they will say that something like 50% is below the poverty line for afghanistan. in the US they will say 10% do. but those classifications of poverty are not the same. the 10% of americans are not living in the 50% of afghanistan style poverty.

hell, americans on wellfare are better off than most of the world.

this is not to say that americans are special, but what americans complain about in terms of poverty, others have it worse beyond their worst dreams. reminds me about that thread about black people in the US or something. people blaming their trashy culture on poverty whereas i pointed out that afghans have it far worse than welfare receiving african americans but don't degrade themselves like they do. and they sure as hell don't make ignorance and debauchery into their popular culture.

what I am saying is that there are people, many people who are starving and don't have a roof over their heads. Shelters are full.

This type of poverty is the same, and it is right here in the US.

One of the curses of capitalism that will always backfire after a certain point.

                      its simply not comparable.

look at this from your article.

$22,314 for a family of four.
the average afghan earns a 2-3 dollars a day.

                      and this

The government’s official poverty rate doesn’t count food-stamp benefits and low-income tax credits as income. If those programs, which totaled about $150 billion last year, were included, many more people would have been counted as being above the poverty line.
i know lazy ass afghan refugees who have been living here since the 80s and havent worked a day in their lives and are living in suburban homes from benefits.

in afghanistan there is no such thing as food stamps, disability, unemployment benefits. or for even the worst off, homeless shelters, soup kitchens and all the other benefits that the "poor" in america receive.

i can say that as someone who works in a major city downtown most of the days, most homeless here are drug addicts. the average american who loses their home because of the bad economy just moves into a small apartment, they don't starve.

This is just a disheartening report, Americans below poverty line is highest number since records began. More and more Americans are giving up their fight to stave off poverty in a tenaciously stubborn economy. IMO, it is not so much about income. I might be considering myself poor, if I had no good free medical care, good urban that lets me live without a car etc., Well, I think Robert Rector don't get this..

it is true, ashraf, there are the super poor in america and some even live in their cars and go to work but a health problem or job loss has sent them broke. what i am talking about, is the average of what is considered poverty. in australia it is if you can't do what the average person does, like send your child on school excursions, eat out, go to the movies. but most of the people on the poverty line probably still have all the mod cons and may even be driving a car. we have a lot of benefits here also.
america had the most amount of beggars that i had ever seen, outside of india, when i was there in 1996. i was really shocked. i also hung out with and had conversations with a lot of street people and most of them were drug takers or alcoholics.
