If you say '9/11' in Chile it holds a completely different meaning.
Watch this.
This was the day on September 11, 1973 when the democratically elected leader of Chile was murdered by the American administration because his socialist policies were a threat to America's commercial interests. The president Salvador Allende along with his cabinet was killed in a bombing campaign and the troops & tanks were advancing on the presidentail palace but he did not flee.
"I don't see why we should stand around and let a country become Communist due to the irresponsibility of its own people"
- Henry Kissinger (Secretary of State at the time.....also you won't be surprised to know he is a winner of the Nobel Peace Prize heh)
Allende was replaced by General Pinochet. A Fascist oppresive dictator backed by America. As commander-in-chief he was in office from August 23, 1973 all the way up until March 11, 1998. Innumerable human rights abuses were committed under his regime with countless torture camps set up around the country. America knew this and and infact supported it (the officers in the torture camps were trained in America). Some of the forms of torture are mentioned in the video.
When the ambassador to Chile complained about this torture, Kissinger replied "tell him to cut out the politcal science lectures".
The domestic economy was good under Allende. People were employed and the standard of living was relatively high. Even while Chile was being bombed by the CIA the people still strongly supported their democratically elected leader.
Let me make it clear that I am not a Socialist or a Communist but I will speak out against blatant hypocrisy when I see it.
After the twin tower attacks Bush said in a speech "All of this was brought upon us in a single day, and night fell on a different world, a world where freedom itself is under attack."
Indeed Bush, indeed.
