Sociologist calls Independence Day eve celebrations ‘psychological ventilator’
LAHORE: A sociologist has called the activity that takes place on the night of August 13, the day before Independence Day, a psychological ventilator which performs the function of flushing out anxiety and tension caused by social pressures such as poverty, injustice and inequality. On August 13, after evening prayers, the youth of Lahore set out to ride through streets and roads at breakneck speeds, hooting and chanting, to celebrate Independence Day. Several deaths and many more injuries in accidents and scuffles are reported. City streets and roads are usually engulfed in noise and vehicular smoke. Punjab University Institute of Social and Cultural Studies Director Prof Dr Muhammad Hafeez, a renowned sociologist, says that this problem is related to inequality, injustice, poverty and lack of recreation facilities, adding that the government should create opportunities for the recreation of the youth. shabbir sarwar
