    Afghans stage anti-US demonstration

PressTV - Afghans stage anti-US demonstration

Hundreds of Afghans have staged a rally in the eastern province of Paktia to protest the killing of innocent civilians by US troops.

The protest rally took place in the town of Jaji Aryub on Thursday after an Afghan civilian was killed and ten others were injured in an exchange of fire between American soldiers and Taliban militants, a Press TV correspondent reported.

Residents said the incident occurred when a rocket fired by US troops hit a house.

Demonstrators chanted anti-US and anti-government slogans and vowed to continue their protest until the perpetrators of the attack are brought to justice.

The NATO command in Afghanistan has so far remained silent on the incident.

The first half of 2011 has been the deadliest six months for Afghan civilians since the US-led invasion of the country began in 2001, the United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA) said in a recent report.

More than 1,462 civilians were killed from January to June, indicating a 15-percent increase compared with the same period last year, UNAMA said.

The US-led NATO airstrikes have also been a leading cause of civilian causalities, leaving more than 79 Afghans dead during the period in question, the report adds.
