PESHAWAR, July 29: Qazi Hafeezullah, an Afghan national, has set a record by getting a PhD degree at the age of 82 from the University of Peshawar.
He became one of the oldest persons in the world to have been recommended for award of PhD degree after he successfully defended his thesis in Institute of Islamic and Arabic Studies, University of Peshawar.
Prof Mohammad Omer supervised his research on ‘Mullah Ali Qari Al Harvi Tafseer on Anwarul Quran and Israrul Furqan’ while Prof Fazalur Rehman of the Islamic University Islamabad was his external examiner.
Qari Hafeezullah belongs to Nangarhar province of Afghanistan and has served in Khost University as teacher of Islamic Studies. He had earlier done MA and M.Phil from University of Peshawar. After retirement from service, he wanted to complete his PhD but couldn’t do it owing to financial constraints.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr Hafeezullah thanked his teachers and especially UoP Vice-chancellor Prof Azmat Hayat Khan, who waived off his fee and other dues for pursuing his PhD degree.
“Getting a PhD degree was a dream for me and it would not have been accomplished, if I was not supported financially by University of Peshawar,” he said.
Two other candidates Ihsanullah and Sohail from the Institute of Islamic and Arabic Studies also successfully defended their theses and were recommended for the award of PhD degrees. —APP
