The claim of the FBI about nearly total victory over American hackers is proved wrong again as the infamous hackers group Anonymous attacks NATO database and makes offensive remarks about the FBI itself. Using its Twitter account, Anonymous stated it had successfully breached NATO computer network, obtaining extremely confidential documents. According to The Fox News report, the stolen data is so substantial that even the cyber criminals found it “irresponsible” to publish the whole pack, contenting themselves with posting links to only two of the stolen documents. The message delivered by hackers is clear and simple. In the wake of US promises to consider cyber attacks the acts of war and the numerous arrests of the alleged Anonymous’ members, the group demonstrates that it is not afraid of any types of persecution.
"We are not scared any more. Your threats to arrest us are meaningless to us as you cannot arrest an idea," says the statement of Anonymous. Recently the FBI put enormous efforts into curbing the hackers’ activity. Anonymous – a group known for its wide support of WikiLeaks and successful attacks against government and corporate computer networks worldwide - became the main target.
The FBI soon claimed that the threat is about to be eliminated as American hackers’ community is almost under total control of authorities. According to the experts, cyber policingunits managed to create an army of informers, using the tactic of intimidation. Every one in four US hackers is an FBI informer, analysts said. "We have already begun to see Anonymous members attack each other and out each other's IP addresses,” said Kevin Poulsen, senior editor at The Wired magazine. “That's the first step towards being susceptible to the FBI."
The recent arrests of sixteen suspected members of Anonymous during a federal raid across America should have proved the claims. In total more than 60 arrests have been made in connection with persecution of Anonymous and their splinter group LulzSec. In the wake of the operation, the most daring and devastating attack of the group is to become a total embarrassment for the global authorities.
"NATO is aware that hacker group released what it claims to be NATO classified documents on the internet. NATO security experts are investigating these claims. We strongly condemn any leak of classified documents which could potentially endanger the security of NATO allies, armed forces and citizens", a NATO spokesman said in a statement while the Twitter account of Anonymous states: “Yes, NATO was breached. And we have lots of restricted material. In the next days, wait for interesting data. We are sitting on about one gigabyte of data from NATO now, most of which we cannot publish as it would be irresponsible”.
The breach could be seen as a sarcastic answer to the recent report for NATO made by a British politician Lord Jopling, who suggested that the hackers present the most serious modern threat to society. At the same time Anonymous issued a warning to NATO not to “make the mistake of challenging Anonymous”.
“Do not make the mistake of believing you can behead a headless snake,” hackers said. Now they believed it’s time for the snake to attack.
Once believed to be in total decline, Anonymous is not afraid to challenge the FBI, delivering its message loud and clear. "Governments lying to their citizens and inducing fear and terror to keep them in control ... corporations aiding and conspiring with said governments ... lobby conglomerates who only follow their agenda to push the profits higher," say hackers in their statement to the FBI and personally to Steven Chabinsky, FBI deputy assistant director. Some call them criminals. Some praise them as heroes, but the fact that the world’s top organizations turn out to be absolutely helpless in the face if cyber attacks prove that hackers are to play a distinctive role in the future of modern world.
