Jamaludeen always finds unusual materials not available in
    the pathetic mass media.
I appreciated the one on the Shah by the way from some months ago.

This one I have mixed feelings about.

I was one who believed the Soviets would stay longer,

having examined all the benefits of occupation they
were anticipating : such as the vast mineral resources
which apparently have yet still to be tapped by any others either.

for sure Dan Rather & CBS were up to some tricks.
I mentioned this in one article but did not name them
for fear of the same phenomenon experienced by the WSJ reporter
    Mary Walsh as described here.

Dan Rather's epic trip "to Afghanistan"
was revealed to me by an Afghan much later
    as having been completely faked.

It was in Pakistan's Tribal Areas, now called FATA,
    never across the border.
    Or near to it.

All the battle scenes and firing were STAGED.

If that had gotten out earlier, imagine the
    embarrassment for CBS...

As to this theory that the Soviets were angling
to dodge out from 1982 - I'm not at all convinced.

    The evidence is only fragments.
There is not much to support this theory as of yet.
Perhaps more Soviet documents will come to light some day.

I think it was only mavericks who floated the idea to
Harvard Negotiator Fisher of both sides withdrawing..

    I didn't like Fisher's face at all.. I wouldn't trust him.
There would have to be alot more proof to convince me
that the Sovs were hoping to get out.

    They are not stupid.
They float trial balloons every now and then too.

The guy who dropped this hint to Fisher could have
been some sort of KGB / GRU [Military Intelligence]
type assigned to bring this idea up.

I would say, though, that truly independent reporting
    is SO valuable.

Perhaps Kabul WAS calm at that time.

As for Wild Wilson, his role has also been way overrated.

He did not himself force the US to enthusiastically support
    Afghan Mujaideen, after all.

    His role was much smaller.

This film seems to believe everything said in
the sensationalistic and inaccurate film Charlie Wilson's War...

Charlie wilson gave mass appeal to america's war against communists using pakistan as the funnel and used afghan people's momentum against russian transgression.

      america dominated it's anti-communist propaganda - check
pakistan (military and army govt) became flush with cash (check) and strengthened its destabilising stance against afghansistan (check)
NA mujahideen gained prominance, ie AHMassoud cult status (check)
Afghan pashtun mujahideen gained nothing (check)

charlie wilson should be remembered as a manipulator of afghans, pakis and ignorant american people for his publicity.

        ^Excellent !

I think Charlie Wilson was a fraud himself, too.
Maybe it's cruel to say this, because this could happen to a
        good person possibly too.

But he had heart problems which symbolized lack of HEART -
TRUE CARING about Afghans and their future.

Same with many Reagan Administration and other govt officials -
their HEARTS were not involved with suffering Afghans.

If so, another road map entirely would have been pursued,
with enduring help -- REAL help, not the lies they tell about today
what they are doing to "help" Afghanistan this past decade of brutal takeover of the country by force.

The real reasoning appears in this video and many others which highlight
the raison d'etre for the assistance to the Mujahideen in the 80s.

What appealed to all these infantile mentalities of Congress and CIA etc
was to "get the Soviets back" for their assistance to the Viet Cong fighters
        against America in Vietnam.

With a rationale like THAT, no heart is ever involved.
Afghans could have been anyone : it didn't matter to these teenagers
ruling America....just "Carpe Diem" - Seize the Day - to
"wound the Russian Bear" - but just a little.
Not enough to make them leave Afghanistan on a dime.

It was a malicious game when seen from a spiritual and psychological
        perspective.
Hardly the cool operation it was made out to be in massive
        propaganda.
Neither was it that successful as it should have been.
        That's another story.

Back to the video, I am going to check perhaps with a knowledgable
source to see if any of this rings true about the Soviets supposedly
having been willing to withdraw after only 3 years of occupation.
        It does NOT ring true.

Plus this video cites Selig Harrison, who is a leftie type, not credible
in my personal opinion. Though I know he is popular with BLS...

The Soviet Generals were interviewed and have said that they were advising as far back as 82 for the Kremlin to leave Afghanistan. In 84 they declared to the Kremlin that the war is unwinnable.
It was the US who wanted the Soviets to stay and bomb the Afghans as long as possible so the Soviet economy and its peoples morale could be destroyed.
