Ok a pakistani friend of ours have question me regarding my edits
And ask if I can expand regarding Tajiks.
Well Here it goes 2 years in our summit meeting, (University Donation for Afghanistan) I was asked to explain myself because I was chosen to speak on behalf of Afghans in university of York (Ontario Canada).
Question was asked What ethnicity I belonged?
My Answer Afghan.
Repeated No What kind of Afghan
I answered the "Ones speaking Dari".
Again questioner responded "You mean Tajiks"
I look paused and Asnwer "Yes That's what they called us"
After some time a Pashtun friend my came and asked me to explain people "why Was not a Tajik but a Pashtun"
My respond
I don't speak Pashtu therefore I am not a Pashtun
Off course I was right but my Pashtun friend wanted me to say that I am a Pashtun Persian speaking.
Now I gave you guys the time to answer this question.
What does a Pashtun mean?
To me and to my grandfather when he was alive here in the west noticed that his grandchildren who arrived from Iran had Cards given by Government of Iran, stating their Ethnicity "Tojik" Which was shocking to him, asked how it happened. The answer of my uncle was very simple.
They asked us what is our mother tongue our answer was "Dari" they stamped "Tojik"
Which is true for those leaving for Iran are aware of this fact. The Shia Gov of Iran simply asked three questions.
What is your first name and what was your sir name (Family name)
What city/town you were born?
What is your mother tongue?
This is how the world categorize people
It many countries they don't ask you for your ethnicity. You mother tongue represents your ethnicity, this is true for Nations of Pakistan, India, Iran, Middle East and central Asia..
So I am a Pashtun Persian LOL I don't think it would make sense because Persian is an linguistically defined as an ethnic group and Pashtun is another linguistically defined Ethnic group, some people argue how come we have Punjabi Pashtuns? well because Punjab is region-nation and its ok to be Punjabi-Pashtun, but linguistically you cannot be a Urdu-Pashtun, because urdu (Defined a language, just as we cannot say Farsi Pashtun or Pashtun-e-Parsi etc.
Imagine world ethnic groups defined as Azerbijabi Persian LOL
Or Pashtun Persian, or Uzbek Persian, or Tajik Persian, etc etc.
Dari speakers of Afghanistan in total may represent 35% of the total population who consider their mother tongue to be "Dari only" in majority belong to same Race AS Pashtuns ie tribal roots/name, looks, culture, dress, Code of honor and livinghood same as Pashtuns. Both Pashtuns and Farsiwans take pride for being "Afghan" you may have witnessed users in social networks such as youtube with signatures from non-pashtun users quoted as "Afghan for Life" or AFG4L or A4L. For a very long time I didn't knew what A4L stands for, well LOL. Not Afghanistan for Live, and once a while Pashtun for life comes around, but mainly Dari speaking of Afghanistan comes to claim themselves as Afghan, just as a Pashtun. Because they are lost into what to call themselves a fantasy which was created by Russians got famous in Turkistan, supported by Iran, mixed with Kufari/Western and ISI propaganda is now filled in the mindset of few Afghans who lost their identity, or just don't know as much as they should of been known. Afghan=Afghan, if anything lets place Afghan=Pashtun. Afghan also pronounced Apokan, Awghan, Arghan, Aoghan, and Avgan, all same meaning, and needless to same these pronunciations came from history books.
Afghan is the modern version of those past identities. Thus these Youngsters are not aware enough that you cannot be an Afghan, if you are a Tajik, Uzbek, or Hazara etc. You are either Afghan by which you defend your honor, take pride as an Afghan, and defend for Islam and Afghanistan, or you are not an Afghan.
The question can you be an Afghan if you were an Uzbek, This question is not asked by Afghan nationalists but also by Uzbeks themselves? In your Passport you are lucky cause national identity of Afghanistan you are Afghan, something which Pashtuns really get pissed off at. But in reality if you are an Uzbek, you belong to Uzbeks, speak Uzbeki, share Uzbek culture, and acknowledge for Uzbeks, and defend your Nation (which in this case arguably Uzbekistan). If you were to be an immigrant, refugee, and came to a non-Uzbek nation, where people welcomed you with warm arms due to kufars occupying your land, and depressing your people, and we as muslim brothers said this is your new home, our government provided you with land, and 100 years later you saw a weak government, or saw the country under occupation, you cannot just use this opportunity to claim your newly given land as part of your Uzbekistan. In other word don't be trader.
In Afghanistan before 1940s or lets say before spread of Russian demographics data, at the beginning named as "Master piece" because it was the first such thing in which the Westerners keen to learned as to what Russian wanted them to learn. This Data spread in afghan society deep in the books of under schools of Communism of 1950-60s. The Russians at that time had a well organized and systematic rules of categorizing groups of people, because they were to consider them "Pure Socialist nations" they did not care nor believed in Race, Tribe, Culture, Tradition, Honor, or Pride they only considered mother tongue to be significant or important enough to categorize people.
In Afghanistan you Afghan first, Muslim second and 3rd your place of birth, and that's how people went doing their everyday thing, from one village to another during 19th and 20th century due to massive number of immigrants or refugees from Turkistan ie Tajikistan and Uzbekistan, Afghan society had developed a change, mixed with politics. Afghan 1st, Muslim 2nd, Farsiwan or Pashtuwan 3rd and Place of birth 4th. By the end of 20th century Afghan 1st, Muslim 2nd, Farsiwan or Pashtuwan 3rd, what kind of Farsiwan and Pashtun (Tribes became important ie English influence) 4th, and Place of birth 5th. In the 21 Century Major changes came to our society. Afghan 1st, Muslim 2nd, what kind of Muslim 3rd, Tajik/Uzbek/Hazara/Turkman/Pashtun 4th, Place of Birth was no longer an Issue since people moved back and forth. By the End of 21 Century Afghans are scared that we will have this
Tajik/Uzbek/Turkman/ etc first, Place of birth 2nd, shia/Sunni 3rd.
As I mentioned traditionally we considered ourselves by our language, two major linguistic groups Farsiwan, Pashtuwan, only Pashtuwan became famous, also pronounced as Pachtun, Pushtoon, Pashtuon Pachitun etc. The Farsiwans did not get throught as famous as Pashtun because of their disunity. Also because Russian wanted to make sure they have a chunk of Northern Afghanistan, since a chunk of Turkistan was also Farsi speakers, they wanted a unity between two different races based on their language, Turkic Farsi speakers and Afghan Farsi speakers. Pashtuwans got fame because Pashtun unity was strong, and well defind themselves to be pure Afghan, after all Pashtu is the only language dated as far as 3000 years old ie Saka Language 1200 BCE-200 BCE some historian placed Pashtu to be directly rooted of remaining Pakhtrian language, the language in which resembles book of Gathas 3000-1500 BCE.
Afghanistan is 75% purely Afghan, Pinch myself for the word "Pure" but its a perfect word to say we are one in majority. Otherwise If Afghanistan was 38% or 47% Afghan and not 75% then a question must be asked how did we survived 30-40s without a Government, a king, or a true political leader? This was why I mentioned that if Pakistan has one day without a government, the next day Pakistan is out of Map. To conclude my views out of 38% Dari speaker, deep in the Afghan society we know we the Tajiks of Afghanistan are related with people of Tajikistan and we are not Tajiks because "The Tatars, sometimes known as Tajiks, were once called Hazara Tatars and are considered physically and culturally similar to the Hazaras. The Moghols (Mongols) of Ghor, although probably related, are considered ethnically distinct from the Hazara." http://www.everyculture.com/Africa-M...st/Hazara.html
Yes its also true that out of that 38%, 40% are afghan by tribe, and 20 % are mixed afghan and some 30-40% are not related to Afghan but rather to Tajikistan. Because 150 years ago during early Russian invasion we had huge number of people coming into Afghanistan mainly Farsi speaking people of Turkistan, Over 600,000 of them alone came in 1800s http://www.migrationinformation.org/...lay.Russian influce 626, during the Russian civil war of "1917 to 1921 affected Tajikistan as an estimated 200,000 to 480,000 people, many of whom participated in the basmachi uprising, fled to Afghanistan, substantially shrinking Tajikistan's population" http://www.migrationinformation.org/...lay.cfm?ID=411
and another 500,000 tajiks came to Afghanistan during 1990s ie Tajik Civil War http://www.hrw.org/reports/1996/Tajik.htm
So Yes We know that out of all population one can estimate some 5-7% of Afghanistan are true Tajiks but all 27% or 38%. If we work with historical data which is what I did I got a number as close as 75%, and if consider those Mixed we could reach 80%. In fact a western source places the percentage of people don't consider their language to be as important as their race "Afghan" by 72%. (Page 12, http://abcnews.go.com/images/Polling...nistan2009.pdf)
Anyways Sorry If I went to far into History but please respond in here to what you think of my answer, Afghan is our ethnicity, BTW If you need source I will bring up some things.
And ask if I can expand regarding Tajiks.
