Interview with Allen Roland, online columnist, California
US President Barack Obama is expected to face serious challenges for re-election as the US war in Afghanistan remains deeply unpopular.
The following is a Press TV interview with Allen Roland, an online columnist in California, about the lack of American public support for the US-led wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, and the overall impact that the unpopularity of the wars has on Obama's chances for re-election.
Press TV: Fighting in Afghanistan, and at the same time approaching the militants is very hypocritical, isn't it?
Roland: Absolutely, it's more Kabuki theater. Let's take a look, a hard look here, first of all, at the cost for the United States; 50,000 American casualties in Afghanistan and Iraq, the real number is probably going to double from that. So, someday soon, the number of American dead and wounded in Afghanistan and Iraq will surpass the 50,000-mark, as of right now that's at 49,182.
Also, 5,998 troops have died; 43,184 American troops have officially been wounded. So, what's really going on here? You and I both know it is Kabuki theater; it is re-election time for Obama.
So, his decisions on Afghanistan and Iraq are going to determine his re-election chances. And, most, 75 percent of this country wants us out of Afghanistan; supposedly, we are out of Iraq, but we're not out of Iraq at all. What does this all mean?
So, we've got the United States and Britain pressing the United Nations sanctions against 18 former senior Taliban figures, not including the real major leaders, and what does it mean? What do they really want?
Let me tell you what they really want; they're looking for an excuse to proclaim victory and get out, and then blame the collapse on anything but themselves. We've already lost in Afghanistan, how can we save face and get out of there, and then let them crash on themselves and say we did everything we could.
This is how desperate the situation is for Obama, and the West; when I say the West, I mean Obama. So, this is Kabuki theater again. All we take with a grain of salt, because it's posturing, political posturing, while we triumph; and Obama is getting very desperate in regards to his reelection chances.
Because they have no base left, except for the hypocrisy, which is knee-deep in Afghanistan, so this is political posturing. And, you're seeing the first gunshots of political posturing, as the Obama administration tries to live-up to its promise, while Obama does his famous straddle, probably staying the course in the end.
