  • Journalist missing in Pakistan

A journalist, Syed Saleem Shahzad, has been reported missing from the federal capital since Sunday, leading to speculation of him having been picked up by intelligence agencies for his article suggesting that last week's terrorist attack on the naval airbase, PNS Mehran, was retaliation to the Navy's crackdown on al-Qaeda operatives and sympathisers within the service.

The first of Mr. Shahzad two-part article appeared on May 27 in the Asia Times Online, of which he is the Pakistan bureau chief. He has been missing since 5 p.m. on Sunday, when he left his home in Islamabad to participate in a programme of the Dunya news channel.

A parallel narrative on Mr. Shahzad's disappearance was he had been picked up by the intelligence agencies on suspicion of writing for the al-Qaeda and would be released by Monday night. Meanwhile, Twitter was abuzz with “Free Saleem Shahzad” messages though there was accompanying scepticism on whether he had been detained by the intelligence agencies.

In the PNS Mehran case, a former naval commando who had been court martialled has been taken into custody along with two others from Lahore as part of ongoing efforts to get to the bottom of the 17-hour-long siege that is widely believed to have been conducted with inside information.

Amid indications of a possible operation in North Waziristan to wipe out terrorist havens, the Chinese news agency Xinhua reported that helicopters of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation had swooped into the tribal agency from Afghanistan to take away five Taliban leaders.

This was almost immediately denied by the U.S. embassy in Islamabad and neither was there any word from the Foreign Office on such an incursion — a particularly sensitive issue now following the unilateral U.S. operation in Abbottabad on May 2 to get al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.

This caught my attention because Syed Saleem Shahzad was a little more even handed than most who cover this war.

I remember he went to swat to interview a Taliban leader there and tried to be fair in his writeup, it seemed to me.

Recently I have not read his articles.

Let us know if there is any further news about this bureau chief.
I thought when I saw the headline he had been kidnapped by
false flaggers pretending to be Taliban.

I bet it's not the services as immediately thought.

5 Pakistan Taliban leaders arrested by NATO forces in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, May 30 (Xinhua) -- Unconfirmed news from intelligence sources said on Monday that five Pakistan Taliban ( TTP) leaders were arrested Monday morning in the Gorvait area of North Waziristan by NATO forces and later taken away by two NATO helicopters to Afghanistan.
According to the sources who asked to remain anonymous, the action was taken by the NATO forces without informing the Pakistani government. If so, this is another Abbottabad-like operation taken by the foreign forces on the Pakistani soil without the knowledge of the Pakistani side.
Political agent of North Waziristan also confirmed the news.
So far, there is no official report about the Monday morning's operation taken by the NATO forces in North Waziristan, a tribal area in northwest Pakistan, which is believed to be a stronghold of militants in the country, who often launch attacks on the NATO forces in Afghanistan across the border.
On May 2, the U.S. forces conducted a raid in Pakistan's northwestern city of Abbottabad, during which the former al-Qaida chief Osama bin Laden was killed in his compound. As the U.S. side did not inform the Pakistani side until the raid was over, it led to a strong protest from the Pakistani side as Pakistan considers the unilateral action taken by the United States has seriously violated its sovereignty.

He grassed up the ISI for letting Mulla Baradar go free when he grassed up OBL's hideout. The deal which would give Taliban transitional control when the yanks leave Afghanistan. He also had an article on Mr Kamran ( the naval commando, accused of helping the TTP destroy the planes and equipment at the base.

He was asked to withdraw his article and name his source he did not and was " picked up" from Islamabad by "Unknown" people some claim to be ISI ( it was after all Islamabad blue area).

There is nothing in this or any world which could justify one single bullet which ripped into any of the murdered people. But you don’t blame until you know the full facts of the case.

The 2 policemen are at blame, they killed them. They TOLD the military to kill them. Not to glorify military but as an army man you don’t use your head much, its a case of well shoot um and then ask questions later It’s as simple as that and as PAKISTAN bangs on about Islamic law then please lets implement the ****ing thing and kill the *******s. Quite simply and very effective deterrent in my eyes.

Fears are growing for the safety of a well-known Pakistani journalist who has been missing for 39 hours now and, according to an international advocacy group, is believed to be in the custody of Pakistan's controversial Directorate for Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI). Human Rights Watch declared that Syed Saleem Shahzad, a reporter working for the Hong Kong–based Asia Times Online and Adnkronos International, the Italian news agency, could

this guy was a good journalist who criticized na pak slave relationship with the US.

I think this Pak nation is truly finished. It serves its American master for dollars, and then allows its own people to be killed, and then also kills people within its borders.

nothing can be taken at face value. there are, from the last report i read, about 400 private security agents, whose backgrounds were not checked by the pakistanis because america requested that. these people are probably there to cause chaos so that pakistan looks bad. there is supposedly, mossad, raw and cia as well. who knows what is really going on there? certainly, not us.
look, osama bin laden, the invisible man, no photo, no video, no body! this is the crap they feed us.
