Let the apostates and infidels bark. Our Amir is in Afghanistan. And may Allah protect him. And if Allah wills that the Amir becomes a shahid, there are enough qualified and competent ulema and mujahedeen who can take his place.

Mullah Mohammad Omar disappeared four or five days ago while moving from Quetta to North Waziristan, a spokesman claimed.

Lotfullah Mashal, spokesman for the Afghan secret police, dismissed an earlier report quoting intelligence officials that Omar had been killed, but added "maybe an incident has happened along the way".

Speculation over the one-eyed leader came as insurgent commanders hiding in Pakistan have told Afghan officials they now feared his betrayal by the ISI spy agency which once harboured him.

Senior Taliban leaders are preparing for either special forces raids against members of their Quetta Shura ruling council, or to be exiled from their safe havens.

Deep American anger that bin Laden was found living "hidden in plain sight" close to a high profile Pakistani military academy has intensified pressure on Islamabad to act against the Taliban leadership believed to be hiding in Quetta, Peshawar and Karachi.
Factions of the ISI which have long supported the Taliban as an asset against Indian influence inside Afghanistan will now reconsider their backing, insurgents fear.

The ISI is particularly keen to avoid the humiliation of another unilateral United States' raid finding Mullah Omar inside Pakistan.

Since the May 2 killing of bin Laden, a number of insurgents have made approaches to the Afghan government, a senior security official told the Daily Telegraph.

"They are bringing reports that the ISI now has divided thinking on Mullah Omar. Some want to protect him and some want to hand him over. He has been told to move house several times since the bin Laden raid," he said.

An Afghan power broker with links to the Taliban in southern Afghanistan, said the movement was "expecting some important losses".

"They fear that a few heads will be cut off. I heard that some even suggest finding a way to make a political offer." "The ISI support is fading for them and sooner or later there will be an exchange in the political game," the power broker said.

One adviser to the US State Department said claims of commanders approaching the Afghan government after the raid were probably propaganda, but the Taliban leadership was genuinely concerned about its safety.

The Taliban also denied the report of Mullah Omar's death, condemning it as propaganda.

Zabiullah Mujahid, a spokesman, said: "He is inside Afghanistan and he is busy directing military operations with his commanders."
