Pakistan would work better in pieces

    Lawrence Solomon
    The National Post

Pakistan would be a more stable and peaceful place if its four component nations were unstitched from one another.

Since Osama bin Laden was found living unmolested in a Pakistani military town, debate has raged over how to deal with this duplicitous, faction-ridden country. Should the United States and others in the West continue to provide Pakistan with billions in foreign aid, in the hopes of currying at least some influence among elements of the Pakistani leadership?

Or should we get tough, and declare it to be the state sponsor of terrorism that it is, knowing this course of action could cripple our efforts to fight the Taliban in Afghanistan and drive Pakistan further into the Chinese sphere of influence?

Neither course would be satisfactory and neither should be adopted. Instead, the West should recognize that the muddle it faces stems from Pakistan’s internal contradictions. This is not one cohesive country but four entirely distinct nations, having little in common save their animosity toward one another, a predominantly Muslim faith and Britain’s decision to confine them within the same borders in partitioning the Indian subcontinent more than a half century ago. The West’s only sensible course of action today is to unstitch the British patchwork, let the major nations within Pakistan choose their future, and negotiate coherently with new national administrations that don’t have impossibly conflicted mandates.

The first A in the word “Pakistan” represents Afghania, a province (since renamed North West Frontier) predominantly inhabited by Pashtuns, the same tribal peoples who live in much of adjoining Afghanistan. They mostly share the same Pashto language and culture as well as religion, and they trade among themselves largely as if a border didn’t separate them.

And, they look out for one another, leading Pashtun factions within Pakistan’s intelligence service to serve interests among their cross-border brethren. In fact, a chief source of conflict between Pakistan and Afghanistan stems from the separation of the Pashtuns by a British divide-and-conquer stratagem. The North West Frontier should be hived off Pakistan and allowed to vote for independence or union with Afghanistan, a more natural home.

South of North West Frontier lies Balochistan (the “t-a-n” of Pakistan), the largest and poorest of Pakistan’s four provinces, despite providing the country with 40% of its natural gas, as well as oil, copper and other minerals. Balochs, a largely secular and proWestern people with their own language and customs, have repeatedly tried to break away from their forcible incorporation into Pakistan.

The most recent attempt, begun in 2005 with rumoured assistance from India and the CIA, has to date been suppressed by Pakistan’s military, by Pakistan’s intelligence agency, and by the many Taliban fighters that Pakistan hosts in Balochistan’s capital, Quetta. Human rights reports, which detail numerous instances of torture and the disappearances of some 5,000 Balochs, peg the number of internal war refugees in Balochistan at 240,000. Balochs, who consider the federal Pakistani govern-ment to be an occupying force, would welcome independence and freedom from their religiously militant Taliban oppressors.

Sindh (the S in “Pakistan”) is one of Pakistan’s two industrialized states, literate and economically developed. With a 7,000-year history, one of the oldest on Earth, Sindh also has its own language and customs, profound grievances with the federal government and a separatist movement. Like industrialized Punjab (the P in Pakistan), which likewise has its own language and customs, an independent Sindh would be a coherent country that could develop without the many contradictions that come of needing to live within an incoherent federal structure.

With the possible exception of Punjab, which is now the top dog in the Pakistani pack, the new nations to emerge from a breakup of Pakistan likely would soon become more prosperous as well as more free, leaving them better off. This breakup of the Pakistani federation would almost certainly be preferable from the West’s perspective as well.

Under the status quo, the monstrous hybrid that is Pakistan for decades has been one of the greatest forces for instability in the world. Apart from its role as a breeding ground for terrorism, Pakistan has been the single biggest proliferator of nuclear weapons technology, its A. Q. Khan network having made or helped make nukes available to North Korea, Iran, Libya and Iraq under Saddam Hussein.

In dealing with a Pakistan that has careened from one unstable government to another, most of them dictatorial and with no genuine national interest, the West has had no effective basis for diplomacy apart from bribes, aimed at securing short-term goals, in the form of foreign aid and military hardware. Once Pakistan is broken up into entities with true and distinct national interests, grievances that give rise to strife and terrorism would abate and the problems the West now faces in Pakistan would become more manageable.

How so? pakistan would work better if it was a true confederation state like Canada, for example alberta is the richest province in canada because of oil, same could have been for baluchistan if pakistan were to function like canada. That was the original goal of the pakistani state when it was created, however the governments/ISI/military never let that happen since the beginning

Facts were well outlined but this is not something new in Pakistan/Afghanistan or Islamic world. The western world leaders, political individual, as well as some of their educated analysts and researchers. Despite all west specially United States of American where people work hard, send their kids to day cares don't see their kids for certain hours or days just so that they can make money and some of their money under so called "Tax" without their permission is send to corrupted Pakistan on the monthly bases as well as yearly and occasionally. However on the paper the amount of X dollars only considered to be the bill of "war on terrorist" war on freedom etc bull**** the fact that even Pakistanis are not happy about their state leave alone the Aid they get, they only give back hate to americans specially people of NWFP and Baluchistan.

We in the west living amongst Americans specially individuals like Taramona native of NWFP actually most individuals in pashtun forum living in the Americas are amongst few individuals who like the rest pay Tax yet cry, and saddened upon States' Aid and support for this artificial British created country called Pakistan.

The Question is when will this drama end? Until when our tax money will be send to these blood thirsty dogs? If that amount leave alone the rest of expenses just the amount received to Pakistan (Since 9/11 up to now which exceeds 7 billion more than Pakistan's 2010 total exports, an amount which was once total GDP of pakistan in 1980) was send to poor people world wide there would of been no poverty in world for the next 20 years.

you are aware Pakistan has sold itself to America and has no soul. They lost all their honor and dignity.
Its not about the man, its about the way Pakistanis are.

"however the governments/ISI/military never let that happen since the beginning"

What you said makes no said to me at all. Yes I understood to what u said in terms of history since Pakistan was created excluding punjabis and sindhis many other ethnics groups or tribes suffered big times. Pakistan=Israel in many ways however you missed one thing its Pakistan's Government/ ISI/military that has kept this Pakistan alive for the past 60 years. Karachi pick your words intelligently "Government/ISI/Military" are big branches and blaming them over what's happening today. Pakistan would of been wiped out in the first 5 years after British left in 1955. But no British created a Government (Although ISI was created in 1939), and a Military that u should be proud of that has been lasted Pakistan for over 60 years.

Please don't blame Government/ISI/Military over failure of your country because this country is build and stand because of these organizations. These organizations are perfect and functioned in every means to complete their jobs. Pakistani Government is far better in the region when it comes to policy making, governing and ruling. ISI is a perfect monstrous agency with millions of agents working around pakistan to protects pakistan, and her existence, spread Propaganda, created idiotic extremist groups unfortunately took lives of million of its own people since 1956. Moreover Pakistani military is by far 2nd strongest in the region South Asia and amongst top 10 in the world. The problem is not Pakistani government, Pakiistani service agency or pakistani military but rather its Pakistan itself. That's what you need to blame creation of Pakistan the biggest mistake ever since it was already broken in 1970s and Pakistan also had to be easy in west of indus but since 1979 up to 9/11 some over 20 years of peaceful Pakistan and golden era of ISI. Things when wrong in 2004 when ISI overestimated their influence and brain washing of non-indic people, assuming that their military mission will be successful if they continue to go by the propaganda of playing double standards.

Comparing with Canada lol Canada is amongst the world top 10 countries. Canadian politics is free from their own ISI like agency. Canada is free nation and I am proud of Canada and their policies, governing and peaceful lives. Don't even dear to compare Canada with corrupted Pakistan. Canada would not even dear to injure a single citizen of theirs even if they are separatists. Canada mostly white Lol I can never imagine Canadian military bombing non-white majority like Toronto or any of their regions. Once and for all this should be said clearly that Canada is a strong and stable country, that has no such of any form of nationalism. People here practice whatever religion, language and culture as long as we work, be good citizens keep our neighborhood clean, safe, pay our taxes and vote to whomever promises us a better future in terms of health, education, better jobs, street safety etc. Pakistan would never be like Canada even if US gives Aid increase by 10 times realistically speaking even if USA transform this old British system wipes out IsI etc to more suitable to today's system proposed by MQM, or Nawaz sharif or world's famous cricketer Mr Khan. Because Pakistan its self a problem.

Shahbaz Khan Pakistan is near to crumble to very soon by its own devious actions. Bin Laden, Support for Militants, its long history of corruption and supporting terror in other peoples countries, plus its just made the hand that feeds it very angry by taking 18 billion dollars only to build villas for Immy Khans and Hamid guls.

Pakistan will divide and crumble. If you was a Wise-Person, you would construct a contengency plan of what we will do once Pakistan is finished.
