  • Kabul not to allow use of its soil against neighbours: FM

KABUL(PAN): Foreign minister Zalmay Rassoul, currently visiting China, on Tuesday said neighbouring countries not need to worry about the signing of a strategic accord between Afghanistan and the US.
"No one will be allowed to use our soil against any foreign country," Rassoul said during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart, Yang Jiechi, in Beijing, the foreign ministry said in a statement.
Rassoul said the international community should be honest in the fight against terrorism. He said Afghans wanted their country to be a developed one like others, so they could live in peace.
The foreign minister said militant hideouts, which are not inside Afghanistan, should be destroyed. He also thanked the Chinese government for its support toward Afghanistan's reconstruction. He exchanged views with Jiechi over the Afghan government-initiated peace process and the security transition plan, a process beginning in July.
Chinese foreign minister on the occasion renewed his country's commitment toward reconstruction of Afghanistan and cooperation in capacity-building of Afghan officials.
Jiechi said they were supportive of the peace process. He urged the international community to work for strengthening the capability of Afghan security forces.
He said efforts were in place to convince Chinese traders to take benefits from investment opportunities in Afghanistan.
Rassoul would also meet Chinese deputy prime minister and is expected to deliver a speech at the institute of strategic studies at the Chinese ministry of foreign affairs, the foreign ministry said.

Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

But that is the purpose of a strategic partnership. To gather information and intimidate.

Good talk, neutral posturing that is the way it should be. Hopefully things materialize.

This strategic partnership was first floated in the early 70's by Nixon who presented it to Daud. Since the Afghan government is a puppet and not truly independent, the whole agreement would be on American terms. We don't yet know what the terms are but the partnership in the 70's was to have US military bases in the country so they can spy on and intimidate the soviet union. This fear the Soviets had forced them to invade and was the direct result of the destruction of Afghanistan.
I doubt China, Iran, or Russia is naive enough to buy the BS that claims that any US investment in the country wont serve its interests to spy and intimidate its neighbors. Not one of Afghanistan neighbors want any permanent military presence in Afghanistan. Pakistan's main reason for its interference in Afghan affairs is a fear of Afghanistan having a strategic partnership with India because they are aware of what it means for its security.
That is what I mean when I say the purpose of a strategic partnership is to gather information and intimidate. Afghanistan is on its way to be used as a launching pad for further intervention in the affairs of others by the American imperialist agenda. This is no good for Afghanistan and it is no good for America.

What you are saying is a hyperbole at best, the fear of U.S. bases led to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. lol That is the most unique statement I have heard. You can do better than that, Khushal.

U.S. does't need Afghanistan to spy on China, Russia nor Iran. What spying, what are you talking about exactly? U.S. has bases all around China and even ones closer to Moscow than they would need in Afghanistan. Give me a satisfactorily postulated answer. No exhagerations and hyperboles, please.

Why don't you tell me why they want perm military bases so bad there. Do youthink they want them so US soldiers can go on vacation there once in a while. And also why did the soviets take such a big risk of invading afghanistan.

What could be better places than Gulf in event of any U.S. agression over Iran. They would be fools to do that from Afghanistan, now or if they every needed to in the next 10 years if their confronation was still on the roller coaster. They might even become friends, who knows in five years even may be.

That is a cheap shot Khushal, no personalising the debate. Thank you. I don't badly want them, just so you know. Let us discuss it for the benifit of mutual learning purpose. Agree?

Oh sorry, I misread your post. Apologies.

Well I don't think first and formost, from what is being said in public, that the strategic pact is not about permanant base. The idea is being ruled out by both Afghan officials and as well as the U.S. itself.

I think they might want to stay there beyond the 2014, for obvious reason to safeguard their interests and the investment made over the past 10 years. Meaning defending the government there and training its military. They may also fear that their influence may go with them after some time if they were to pack up and leave. Obviously keeping Afghanistan close to them through directly building its institudes and helping it economically will in turn serve their interests in the region.

U.S.S.R invasion of Afghanistan had many factors. Establishment of U.S. bases was not a concern on radar.

you are aware that several MPs of this joke parliament have said they will take up arms against US (not talking about the NA protest ), and most importantly, that the Afghan tribes have rejected this.

Their word will not change, and anyone who is trying to impose a will of a unwelcome view on Afghans is asking for more trouble than already exists.

btw, what standing do any of these so-called "officials" have anyways to talk? None.
