PESHAWAR: The ruling Awami National Party (ANP) will kick off its membership drive from April 15 in which the party is planning to register more than 100,000 women as its members.
This was announced by Provincial Vice-President of ANP and member of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly Shagufta Malik at a news conference here the other day.Central joint secretary of the party and member of the National Assembly Jameela Gilani, MPAs Tabassum Younas and Yasmin Sameem Katozai and female vice-presidents of various district chapters were present on the occasion.
Shagufta Malik said the party’s famale office-bearers would go door to door to create political awareness among the women and bring them into the ANP fold during the three-month drive. She said the women members would also set up camps in various districts where senior party leaders would come to encourage womenfolk to become ANP members.
“The camps would be set up at secure places that could be visited by women easily. Proper security measures would also be adopted,” Shagufta Malik added. She said the ANP chief Asfandyar Wali Khan had stressed the need for making women as members while speaking at the recent central executive council meeting of the party.
The lawmaker was of the opinion that the ANP considered women participation in political process as guarantee to improvement, sustainability and stability of the political system. She said the women members would help spread party message to every house. “This is the reason that the party successfully organised women convention on the occasion of International Women Day despite the wave of terror across the country,” she informed. Shagufta Malik said women members of the ANP also played an active role in relief and rehabilitation of the internally displaced people and flood affected people.
