Is this normal in Peshawar for people to not know what tribe they are from?? i mean they speak pashto and everything, but they had no idea about their tribe.

Imran Khan was telling the audience at the mosque where I saw him that he was threatened on several occasions, and warned at first not to participate in politics.
There are two type of Pukhtoons, NANG and QALANG. The NANG Pukhtoons are associated with tribes, and the QALANG Pukhtoons are urban folks. The QALANG are either Pukhtoonized, or descendants of tribes or regions that no longer exist in large numbers. Throughout generations, one Pukhtoon tribe has either displaced, or assimilated smaller tribes. Those who fled, settled in urban areas. There are also instances of migrant of various tribes.

Belonging to a tribe is primitive concept which has no place in modern statehood. It is also not that hard to fake belonging to a tribe, as anyone can adopt any tribe and region. However, more and more Pukhtoons disassociate from their tribes for various reasons and differences.

This might be a big issue to some one who has not lived in Watan for a great length of time, or experienced with internal affairs. But it is not uncommon to find people who belong to a class, but not tribe.

Many people, and social classes, are presumed as "outsiders", like khar-kars, nayan, daman, kazabgars, chowarai etc, etc, they are considered as "none Pukhtoons", and the reason for that is because they don't belong to tribes. However the truth of the matter is that many of them are the local indigenous people that were either displaced, subjected, annihilated, and forced into these professions by much larger and stronger tribes. Later adopted as hamsaya etc. So they are Pukhtoons in every sense of the word, however, since they don't belong to the tribes that control a certain region, they are "NONE PUKTHOONS", and by that they mean "THEY DON'T BELONG TO OUR TRIBE". This is why through out generations, one Pukhtoon tribe considers another Pukhtoon tribe as KAAM ZAAT. Only because the other tribe doesn't belong to their group. Not based on actual lack of Pukhtoonyat, but lack of direct blood connection or affiliation.

For example, Maseed and Wazir are at odds as to who are real Pukhtoons, midst them they consider the Burki/Urmari as none Pukhtoons. The Bunusee are considered none Pukhtoons, the Wardak and Laghamani are considered none Pukhtoons, the Nuristani and Kunari are considered none Pukhtoons, the Khattak and Yousafzai had a history as well, read Khushal Khan poetry. The Bangash, Shinwari and Apreedi call each other NONE PUKHTOONS.

Not because they aren't ETHNIC PUKHTOONS, but because they are not part of their CLAN, GROUP. It's politics, it's about inheritance and right of ownership.

To each tribe, their world of PUKHTOONYAT revolves around them. Each tribe in it's own essence think they are the REAL PUKHTOONS, while the other is KAAM ZAAT. Like the DURRANI would say that GHILZAY are the sons of GHAAL ZOY, not REAL AFGHANS. While the GHILZAI will say that DURRANIS are the seed of Persians or BANI-ISRAEL. This is why some tribes that are considered Sadozai/Durrani, are very much of the idea that they are Jews i.e. like Yousafzai and Afghan amirs claiming to be from the tribe of Benjamin.

Just like them, you too are infected by this diseases. So now you are surprised that there are Pukhtoons that don't belong to a tribe. What's so shocking? Not everyone lives in the 7th century.

On the other hand, I have come across Adbalis, Durranis, Ghilzai, Yousafzai, Apreedi, Bangash as far as Fiji and Bangladesh, who belong to TRIBES, but don't speak a single word of Pukhto or practice Pukhtoonwale.

Maro par dada Abdalay tee, assan be Afghan Fatan aaan, chaak de paate!! lollllllll

But, you have a chance to educate your people, your tribe, and your elders at home who have been brought up with this primitive concept of tribalism that is detrimental to our national interests as citizens of a cohesive STATE as Pukhtoons.

Tribes should play a role, but a uniting and positive one. Not a dividing and separatist one.
