  • Karzai's Cousin Killed by Coalition Forces

Karzai's brother said Thursday that NATO-led forces mistakenly killed a cousin of Afghan President Hamid Karzai during operations in southern Afghanistan.

Provincial council chief Ahmad Wali Karzai said Yar Mohammad Khan was killed at his home in the Dand district of Kandahar province late Wednesday as coalition forces pursued insurgents in the area.

Afghan and NATO officials are investigating the incident.

Earlier on Thursday, the coalition said NATO and Afghan forces captured a Taliban leader, killed an armed individual and detained several suspected insurgents during operations in Kandahar city on Wednesday. It's unclear whether the individual reportedly killed in those operations is Karzai's cousin.

President Karzai has called the killing of civilians in NATO operations unacceptable. On Thursday, he urged the United Nations to put pressure on NATO to exercise greater care in protecting civilians while pursuing insurgents.

Mr Karzai last week rejected an apology from General David Petraeus, the top commander of U.S. and NATO forces in Afghanistan, after a NATO airstrike killed nine boys in northeastern Kunar province.

Meanwhile, in northern Afghanistan, German troops accidentally killed a woman during a gun battle Wednesday in the Chardara district of Kunduz province, police said. Coalition officials said Thursday they were investigating the incident.

he is doing lots of things that america would disapprove of, i imagine. meeting and doing business with with russia, turkey, iran. non acceptance of the apology for the slaughter of those chldren and other civilians, which gave it more international publicity. disapproving of the private security thugs.

No pain no gain...This reminds me of that Man On Fire movie. Angrakshak is the English version.
a bunch of people accuses karzai for allowing the americans to do as they wish and then his poor cousin gets killed. afghans are so naive, they will fall for anything. its ****ing frustrating...

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

karzai has always wanted bases in the country. the guy is two faced, he will say one thing with one group and something completely different with another.

wiki leaks already revealed that karzai offerent permanent bases to the americans.
There are people today who think that admitting God’s absolute greatness decreases the value and importance of humans in the creation, as if God and mankind are rivals competing in greatness and power. Meanwhile I feel that whenever our perception of God’s greatness increases, with it we become greater, because we are the creation of a great God.

Its become really difficult to judge Karzai's credibility vis a vis Afghanistan

One one hand you see him making some defiant remarks every now and then, you think that maybe he has some political insight and a plan when he attempts negotiations with taliban to sway some "moderate" elements to his side and ofcourse that he is a pashtun with considerable favor among other ethnicities as well..

But then you look at the fact that he has had about 10 years to put together a plan, and in nearly a decade Afghanistan today bleeds worse than it did when the Talibs were ousted and that there is greater corruption among the ranks that puts a big question mark for his continued support by the US.

At the end of 2001 you have just ousted a regime that majority of the Afghans couldn't tolerate any further and considering all the factors you should be able to gather significant support as you go in. And that is what happened, when the US first finished off the talibans everything was done and over with fairly quickly.

The US then made two mistakes, the put in-charge Karzai and they threw their support behind a government that not only lacked political clout and vision but it also intended to marginalize the pashtuns. The US thought that putting together a mix of ethnicities lead by a pashtun would create the "ideal role model" government. But it didn't, and there are two reasons for that

                        1. As the US got engaged in Iraq, their choices in Afghanistan automatically became discredited

                        2. Add to that their inability to govern, no political strategy, rampant corruption..the situation was ripe for the Taliban comeback which as the time progressed became a much more stable alternative for the Afghans

And now we are nearing the end of this war, what has changed ? nothing...The jirga itself has failed to establish a strategy, it seems as though everyone including the afghans is waiting for this end to the war.. But there is no idea of what is going to come after.

In my opinion i look towards the Jirga to come up with a coherent strategy and it is their job to absolutely prevent a repeat of the history..For that the must appoint a man who can lead Aghanistan and the afghans must realize this instead of falling for emotional sentiments of a failed crusader
