Deadly Taliban suicide attack targets Jalalabad bank
At least 18 people were killed in a Taliban attack on a bank Saturday in Jalalabad. Police collecting their paychecks were among the wounded, including the provincial police chief, in the third attack targeting Afghan police this week.
By News Wires (text)
AFP - Eighteen people were killed and over 70 others were wounded, including police chiefs, Saturday in a Taliban attack on a bank in Jalalabad, eastern Afghanistan.
Police collecting their salaries were among the casualties including Alishah Paktyamwal, police chief of Nangarhar province where Jalalabad is located, and his deputy.
The incident is third major attack in a week targeting police in Afghanistan, who alongside the army are due to take control of the war-torn country's security from 2014, allowing most international troops to withdraw.
It happened when seven Taliban suicide bombers burst into a branch of Kabul Bank in the city and detonated their devices. There was also a hail of gunfire as the attack unfolded.
"Unfortunately, 18 of our countrymen were martyred and more than 70 injured," Gul Agha Shirzay, provincial governor of Nangarhar province, told a press conference.
He added that seven suicide attackers armed with guns and grenades carried out the attack.
The casualties included police, bank staff and civilians. One of the dead was a police officer as were 14 of the injured.
One man who was in the bank when the attack started, who gave his name as Ewazullah, told AFP that the gunmen were "killing indiscriminately".
"I was in the bank to withdraw some money when several armed men entered, fired some shots in the air and then told the people to gather to one side and then they started shooting," he said.
"They were killing indiscriminately, I was hiding in a corner."
Baz Mohammad Shirzad, regional health director for eastern Afghanistan, said he had asked for extra army security at the hospital where the injured were being treated amid fears of a possible fresh attack there.
Although the fighting is now over, a curfew has been imposed across the city by local police banning cars from the roads, an AFP reporter said.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai condemned the attack.
"People were there doing business deals and to receive their salaries," he said. "This attack once again showed the cruel actions of the terrorists who do not want the people of Afghanistan to live in peace."
A medical source speaking on condition of anonymity said the police chief of Nangarhar province where Jalalabad is located, Alishah Paktyamwal, plus his deputy and the city's criminal police chief were slightly hurt.
Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahed said the militant Islamists, who have been fighting international and government forces in Afghanistan for nearly ten years, were responsible.
Eastern Afghanistan is seen as volatile. Nangarhar province borders Pakistan, where the Taliban and other Islamist networks keep rear bases that Washington wants the Pakistani military to destroy to help suffocate the insurgency in Afghanistan.
A total of 12 people including police officers died in attacks in the region Friday, including nine in a car bombing near a district police headquarters in the eastern city of Khost.
Afghan security forces are frequently targets of attacks by the Taliban and the latest incident is the third significant one against them in Afghanistan in the space of a week.
Last Saturday, 19 people including 15 police and an intelligence agent died when suicide bombers armed with guns, grenades and car bombs targeted police headquarters in Afghanistan's de facto southern capital, Kandahar.
The Afghan police and army are due to take responsibility for security in their own country from 2014, allowing the bulk of international troops to withdraw.
A limited withdrawal of foreign forces is expected to start from more stable provinces of Afghanistan from July.
There are currently around 140,000 international forces in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban.

He was part of a bigger group. Plus Faye, do you seriously think the public and the police are going to allow a Talib into a bank. Of course, this was a four month planned out attack, he used the police or army uniform to avoid detection.Originally posted by faye View Postthat is really disgusting but also really weird. did they rob the banK? don't taliban have beards? anyone could say it is taliban over the phone. did they commit suicide? article says suicide bombers.
Please use your common-sense, these kind of attacks are not video game like, they are planned for months before they are ordered. The only people who are allowed weapons are security guards, armymen and police. So please post a better comment than that, sounds so childish
Afghan Intelligence has found out, that the attack was planned by the Haqqani-Punjabi Jihadists in Pakistan.

i am an amateur sleuth.
so they cut off their beards to attack people in a bank, when they most probably could have killed people in a million other places. perhaps it was for the footage. they wanted to go on film.
this brings out the b.s. detector. so who did you say you are working for????
please appease my childish curiosity.

Have not those who promote only their own interests again brought disgrace upon themselves? At least 120 people have been killed and more than 200 have been wounded by indiscriminate Taliban violence in the past week. Hypocritical Taliban leaders talk from their hideouts about protecting the people, even as they urge their reluctant commanders to commit indiscriminate murder, and then issue disingenuous directives claiming to shield Afghans from harm. Instead have not these terrorists, these enemies of all that is sacred, used indiscriminate violence to kill scores of innocent Afghans? Their rhetoric does not match Afghan reality. For example , insurgent violence against civilians includes a suicide bomb attack on civilians waiting in line to get their city identification cards; at least 31 civilians were killed and dozens were wounded in this vicious attack, Taliban spokesperson boastfully admitted responsibility for the immoral attack. Following Kunduz attack, Taliban attacked another crowd of civilians in Khowst province with a suicide bomb that killed at least 12 innocent civilians and wounded more than 40. Eyewitnesses accounts from the scene report that among the dead and wounded were government officials.

Three days ago Taliban and their terrorist Al-Qaeda partners proved how little regard they have for innocent civilian life by sending suicide bombers in to a Jalalbad city bank, killing 40 and wounding dozens of innocents. These Taliban common criminals were caught on a bank surveillance camera. Taliban spokes-person shamelessly claim credit for this inhumane and barbaric act calling the murdered innocents infidels. YouTube - Nangarhar Attack-22-02-2011-TOLOnews.comThe insurgents menace the Afghan population in many different ways -- from indiscriminate violence, oppressive practices, the imposition of an extremist ideology and in preventing the growth and development of basic services. Hardly a day passes by without roadside bomb explosions or suicide bomb attacks that killinnocent civilians. These cowardly insurgents do not have the courage to face brave soldiers from the Afghan army or International SecurityAssistance Forces. Instead, roadside bombs, and suicide bombers their weapon of choice, frequently caused indiscriminate death to innocent civilians.U.S Central Command strongly condemns these vicious, cowardly and inhumane acts of violent extremist organizations. Our heartfelt thoughts and concerns are with the families of those murdered by the Taliban. We will work with our Afghan partners to find those responsible and bring them to justice. The people of Afghanistan deserve --better than the Taliban-- the opportunity to live in a country that is free of IED suicide bombing death and destruction. For Afghans to get the Taliban free Afghanistan they want for themselves.

just as i suspected, that guy shooting was a paistani. who says he is officially taliban. he is a jihadist. one report stated that the taliban were surprised about this event and were going to investigate.
no, gi joe, none of the deaths of innocent people in an innocent land are acceptable. if the supposed terrorists of 9/11 were from saudi arabia, when are you guys going to invade and slaughter innocents there?

Faye,
According to the other thread about this attack, the Taliban did claim responsibility for this attack. the Taliban aren't saints but neither are NATO forces. The difference is that NATO has command and control and most of the resistance are a bunch of ragtag gangs that fight for different motives. Some of these groups are working with the government one day and are fighting against the government the next day. Some of these groups are fighting each other and fighting the government at the same time. They have no organizational structure and have no command and control, and that is why NATO has difficulty defeating them.
There is also evidence that some NATO forces bribe these gangs not attack them.
Rent-a-peace with Taliban
The British employed these bribing techniques, so did the Soviets. Point being nothing is really accomplished with all this except that the suffering of the afghans is prolonged.
My economic professor told me that these wars in Afghanistan and Iraq basically transfers wealth from poor people in rich countries(average working American joe) to rich people in poor countries(thugs and warlords), the poor suffer on both sides, and the poor fight on both sides. I reminded him that wealth is also transferred to rich people in rich countries as well.

i googled and found differing accounts including the one i mentioned where the taliban were suprised by the news of this attack. i realise there are different groups and from the views expressed it sounds as though, some places taliban were fair, in some places they were cruel and oppressive. i am not defending the taliban, i am just not believing everything we are told. a newspaper might label these guys taliban when they are not.
