Taliban killed a tribal elder in the central Logar province Wednesday night while they were planting a mine near his house

The incident happened when Taliban militants were trying to plant a mine near the house of Mohammad Nasim, a 55- year-old tribal elder in the province's Baraki Barak district, local officials said.

Nasim was killed when he tried to stop them, officials added.
In another report, two police were wounded when their car was hit by a road-side mine blast in the district's Baraki Rajan village, Mohammad Rahim Amin, the sub-governor of Baraki Barak district in Logar, told TOLOnews.
Road-side mines are an easy tool for insurgents to target Afghan and coalition forces, in which civilians are the main victims.

The report comes after unknown gunmen shot dead three High Court judges on Kabul-Logar highway and wounded 12 others on Tuesday.

JALALABAD, Afghanistan (AFP) – Taliban militants kidnapped 21 tribal elders in Afghanistan close to the Pakistani border whose relatives apparently work for the Afghan government and NATO, an official said Monday.
The incident happened eight days ago in Marawara, in the eastern province of Kunar, which borders Pakistan's lawless tribal district where Taliban and Al-Qaeda-linked networks have carved out strongholds.
"The Taliban first called them for a meeting at a mosque and after a discussion, the Taliban took all the elders away to an unknown place," the local official told AFP on condition of anonymity.
"Negotiations have started with the Taliban for their release, but have produced no result so far", he added.
Taliban militants have been leading a nine-year insurgency against the Western-backed Afghan government and foreign troops since the 2001 US-led invasion brought down their Islamist regime in Kabul.
A local Taliban commander identified as Qari Zia-ur-Rahman claimed responsibility for the abduction by SMS to an AFP correspondent.
"The reason behind this act is that some relatives, sons and close family members of these men, work in the Afghan army, Afghan police and some with NATO", he explained.
"Unless these people do not resign their jobs with the army, police and NATO, we will not release the hostages", he added.
Afghan police and other local authorities refused to comment.

Pakistani Taliban kill over 20 pro-govt tribal elders

IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
Islamabad, June 25, IRNA
Pakistan-Taliban
Pakistani Taliban have shot dead over 20 tribal elders of peace committee in the restive South Waziristan tribal region, witnesses said Wednesday.
Supporters of Pakistani Taliban commander Baitullah Mehsud captured the tribal elders on Monday after a battle with pro-government tribesmen, according to officials.
Taliban had made hostage the elders at Jandola town, the gateway to Waziristan, after they seized the town, killing four tribesmen on Monday.
Two militants were also killed in the fighting.
"Taliban threw bodies of kidnapped tribal elders at Jandola Bazaar this morning," a witness said on phone from the town.
"Taliban also made announcements through loud speakers to remove the bodies," he said, requesting not to be named for security concerns.
Correspondents in the region said that death toll of tribal elders in Waziristan has risen to 40 in three days.
Witnesses said that authorities and relatives took away the dead bodies for burial as the killing plunged the area into shock.
Waziristan is base of chief of Taliban Movement Baitullah Mehsud, who have strong ties with Afghan Taliban and al Qaeda. He is accused of masterminding suicide attacks across the country and killing Benazir Bhutto in December.
"The killing action will invite strong reaction from tribesmen," a local said. The incident will have bad impact on the peace process in the region, he said.
Pakistani Taliban have intensified in Pakistan's tribal region as well as parts of North West Frontier Province in recent weeks.
The federal government has also admitted that Taliban are knocking at Peshawar, the capital of North West Frontier Province.
Interior Advisor Rehman Malik told the parliament on Tuesday that the security forces will launch targeted actions against the militants within a week.

MOHMAND AGENCY: At least 40 people were killed and 70 others wounded when a suicide bomber attacked the office of a political agent in Ghalnai on Monday.
The bomber hit the office at about 2:00pm, killing 40 people including two journalists. About 30 injured have been shifted to Peshawar, the provincial capital of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. An emergency has been imposed at Lady Reading Hospital, Peshawar. Two bodies have also been taken to Peshawar’s hospital.
The political administration of Mohmand Agency told SAMAA that several injured people are in critical condition.
While talking to the media after visiting the injured in Lady Reading Hospital, provincial Information Minister Mian Iftikhar Hussain said that the government was taking all possible measures to curb the menace of terrorism from the country. But, he added, peace in Pakistan is linked to peace in Afghanistan. He bitterly condemned the suicide blast and directed the hospital administration to provide better facilities to the injured. Mian Iftikhar Hussain was of the view that this situation will continue in the country for the next 14 years if proper steps are not taken against terrorism. (Source)
