Pakistan Taliban destroy two schools in north-west

Armed militants have destroyed two government schools in Mohmand tribal district in north-western Pakistan, officials say.

Three schools have been destroyed in the area since Tuesday.
Two primary schools for boys were blown up on Tuesday night in the Safi area of Mohmand, a local official told the BBC Urdu service.
He said both school buildings were destroyed. The Taliban has claimed responsibility.

An area spokesman for the militants, Sajjad Mohmand, told the BBC that...

Taliban Destroy Girls' Education, Pakistan Is Powerless

PESHAWAR, Jan 28 (IPS) - "My school was destroyed by (Pakistani) Taliban. I won't be able to go back to it," says Sumaira bibi, a grade 5 student from Matta in Swat district.

Scores of schools and other government buildings have been blown up over the past two years, in Swat, Bajaur and Mohmand, restive parts of Pakistan's North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) as the Taliban seek to impose a radical Islam and challenge the authority of the government.
In late 2007, Islamabad retaliated by launching military operations that have led to an exodus of displaced civilians.
Eleven-year-old Sumaira and her family now live in a tent in Kacha Garhi, an erstwhile camp for Afghan refugees in...

'60 per cent of Swat's schools destroyed'

Sixty percent of the schools in Swat in Pakistan's restive northwest, where the military is currently focussing its anti-Taliban operations, have been destroyed, the UN says, quoting government officials. "In Swat, the district ...

Taliban takes aim at school buildings

PESHAWAR, Pakistan – Militants have taught Pakistan some tough lessons. Among them is that the country’s education system is a prime target for militants trying to coerce the people and undermine the state

senior police official in Peshawar said such destruction is designed to pressure the government to “stop action against the Taliban or surrender to their dictates”.

To date, al-Qaeda and the Taliban have destroyed some 800 schools in the Pashtun belt, which includes Pakistan’s North West Frontier Province (NWFP) and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) bordering Afghanistan. Such action literally leaves the government picking up the pieces to continue education programmes.

Azra, 14, a 4th-class student, shook as a cold breeze hit her face at the site of her destroyed school in Kabal, in the Swat district. “It is very cold to sit in the open”, Azra, said.

Authorities provided tents for classes, but the weather has rendered this ineffective. Besides “tented schools”, the government is running double shifts at schools that are still usable.

Such conditions make the already difficult task of education that much more difficult, raising the prospect that already low literacy rates may slip. Government figures for the NWFP indicate literacy is 26 percent for females and 45 percent for males.

The Swat, Buner, Upper and Lower Dir, Shangla and Malakand districts have 273 destroyed schools; another 367 are damaged, according to data from the Provincial Education Department in Peshawar.

“Some 401 schools have either been fully or partially damaged in Swat Valley alone”, said Qaiser Alam, an education department official. Of those, 214 were for girls. The Afghan Taliban publicly oppose girls’ education. When they ruled Afghanistan, from 1996-2001, they barred girls from attending schools. In Pakistan, the Taliban cite different reasons for bombing schools.

“They say (they) destroy the schools because the military use them as bases or check-posts and attack us from these facilities,” said Ziauddin Yousafzai, a Mingora-based educator. “The conservatives, when they were not as armed as they are today, used to say whoever gets modern education will find a place in hell”.

The destruction of schools began in 2008 and still continues. A militant spokesman, Ikramullah Mohmand, in the Mohmand tribal district phoned local journalists February 21 to say another school in Lakaro region has been destroyed.

Some 100,000 students in Swat alone have been affected by the attacks.

“These (militant) forces are against Pashtuns getting an education. They do not want the Pashtuns to prosper like others. The destruction of schools is continuation of their hatred of education”, Sardar Hussain Babak, the provincial minister for education, said.

Tribal areas along the Afghan border have also suffered losses. The Bajaur district reports 74 schools destroyed; the Mohmand tribal district, bordering Bajaur, has lost 35 schools.

Surprisingly, militants in North and South Waziristan have not been destroying schools. “The Taliban in Waziristan have not been destroying the schools; rather, they use them as bases”, said Dilawar Wazir, a journalist in South Waziristan’s Wana town.

The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) used a government high school building in Kotkai, South Waziristan, to train suicide bombers. Former TTP chief Baitullah Mehsud, who was killed in a missile attack last August, used the same building to talk to journalists in May 2008.
A preliminary damage assessment report by the Provincial Disaster Management Authority in Peshawar said reconstruction of the schools will cost US $68.1 million.

There are serious concerns about when the schools will be rebuilt. In areas where militancy still prevails, reconstruction is difficult to start.

But the money is elusive. The government is quick to make commitments but slow to release funds. About one-third of the money needed has been pledged by foreign countries and donors.

“Naturally, we cannot bear these losses alone. The federal government and international donors must honour pledges to reconstruct these schools”, Sardar Hussain said.
