  • Afghan rivers

From what I have heard, we have rivers in Afghanistan that are providing water for free to Iran.

what are your thoughts? How serious is this? Has this been blown out of proportion? The thing is, I haven't found any authoritative sources on this matter. I hope most of our members can provide their insight.
Even Adobe Photoshop can't change me.

A line[Durrand line] of hatred that raised a wall between the two brothers -Hamid Karzai

For generations, the Hindus of India prayed for deliverance from "the venom of the cobra, the teeth of the tiger and the vengeance of the Afghan."

The men of Kábul and Khilj also went home; and whenever they were questioned about the Musulmáns of the Kohistán (the mountains), and how matters stood there, they said, "Don't call it Kohistán, but Afghánistán; for there is nothing there but Afgháns and disturbances." Thus it is clear that for this reason the people of the country call their home in their own language Afghánistán, and themselves Afgháns. The people of India call them Patán; but the reason for this is not known. But it occurs to me, that when, under the rule of Muhammadan sovereigns, Musulmáns first came to the city of Patná, and dwelt there, the people of India (for that reason) called them Patáns—but God knows!

Can you tell me more about the rivers? How much are we losing in lost revenues?

lolz, water will become so scarce soon one day that there would be little surprise if a world war 3 occurred over it.

i wouldnt dwell over it admin khan. at this time, our country is already screwed in every possible way as it is.

i dont know if it can be expressed in dollars.

But the fact is, our rivers are not regulated. Instead of channeling the water to serve our own soil for farming, it just flows into foreign territory. And Pakistan and Iran use it to grow crops which are sold in Afghanistan for very cheap prices. As a result our local farmers are unable to grow crops and sell them in the market. Because water is scarce and the soil is difficult to work on. This pushes the price of local produce go up.

This is simply sad. A lot of this has to do with our corrupt leadership in our government.

Yea, but just something to think about it. We have farmers complaining that we have no water, but here most of our water is outsourced for free.

Water is the new oil by the way.

Water also goes from the mountains of Nuristan, into Pakistan for free.

Produce grown from the east are sold to Pakistan for dirt cheap. Then sold back into Afghanistan, for a premium price.

kunar seen goes into pakistan and they produce electricity with it in pukhtunkhwa an dhtis electricity is channeled to poonja.

so this means on both sides pukhtuns are screwed.

okay here is the truth. when i was in panjsher, i saw the river roaring it's way in to kabul and when i asked where all the water went, i was told that it made it's way all the way to pakistan and truth be told i was no happy at all.
now, when i was on my way to nangrahar and pakistan, i saw this very sad looking stream making it's way towards pakistan and all of a sudden i was not as angry.
i remember naghloo and mahipar being a sight at one point of time. the water dams used to cast rainbows in the air when you looked at it... now they are all dried out.
it was a violent sight in panjsher...just to see that water crush against the rocks with such intensity but towards nangrahar, there is nothing in there... when i go back this coming summer i will show you guys this in pictures.
it's not something worth arguing over. that is how God intended for it to be. kabul's river inside kabul has become a garbage dump. i remember people drowning there every year. now people dump their garbage in there. may God give us so much that we spare the rest to pakistan and india.

I am no bird, and no nest ensnares me.

non commercial would cost less if he was in charge himself which he plans on doing. right now it's n herat but soon it will be in qanadahar.

Kabul river actual merges with much more massive Konar river before runing to Chatalistan.

                      Admin,
I was part of a group that did a study on issue, but due to copy right and not wanting to reveal my real name i can not share the document. Water is the 21 century oil and Afghanistan has plenty of water. All our rivers like Amu, Helmand, Kabul, Punjshir, Konar flow to neighboring countries...Hilmand to Iran, Amu to Uzbakistan/Tajikistan and Kabul river(marging with Konar) goes to Pakistan. Except Helmand water treaty with Iran we have no water treaty with any neighbors. Per Hilmand water treaty which was inked by late Mosa Shafiq(later murdered by Pashtun Khalqis) iran must buy water from Afghanistan. In late 2003 Iran and Afghanistan had agreed to participate a river common commissioners sessions… the purpose of commissioners were to try to solve problems about Iran water rights based on monthly table of water distribution and also other common activities in the river. Later under Dr Spanta a afghan/international(Polish and German engineering’s) expert community were established to study legal and technicality of Helmand treaty. The commissioners find major breach of Helmand treaty by Iran, which included a drinking water processing factory which ships bottle water to gulf state.

Here are some links that might be helpful about AmuRiver.

“A top long-term need is the restoration of the water resources technical and institutional capabilities. Afghanistan has untapped water resources such as the Amu DaryaRiver that provides vast quantities of water not being used by Afghanistan. More worrisome is the fact that countries bordering Afghanistan’s north have developed treaties on the use of the Amu DaryaRiver and Afghanistan wasn’t represented. To improve the current situation in Afghanistan, it is imperative that these and other critical issues involving water resources development and management in Afghanistan be examined.”

As there is no proper government, all agreements are invalid and will be dissolved, and you can take that to the bank.
I’m not aware of any agreement Kabul regime with any neighboring countries yet...free feel to inform me of any... for a record I think Karzia regime no matter how corrupt has been upholding Afghanistan interest than any other regime in past 30 years...that includes the savages you cheer for.
At the end I think we people of Afghanistan must relaise our common interest, rather then worry which gov post is hold by which person from our ethnics…as if it really matters…for over 250 years 85% of all gov post were owned by Pashtuns and yet today most Pashtuns of Afghanistan are as backward, as miserable as any other ethnic group.(if not more.)

So yeah Afghans should take it back only if they could build a dam on it with the help of India.
I belief rivers from Nuristan also flows their as well. It's not fair for the Afghans to give water for free to anther country, which was apart of them. Either get paid, or get back. Am sure Afghans can build it with American help, or with Pakistans favorite buddy, the Chinese.

(oh wow, my dad is so anti-Pakistan, that it is rubbing off to me)

It's more like Pakistani rivers (the Kunar which becomes the Kabul) flows into Afghanistan and then back into Pakistan. Maybe Pakistan should damn the Kunar in Chitral?
