Our sincerest condolences go out to the family and friends of Engineer Abdul Latif Ashana, deputy governor of Kandahar, a man who was working selflessly for the people of Kandahar Province. His death is such a loss for peace loving citizens of Afghanistan. Deputy Governor Ashana faced danger throughout his public service career from the insurgency, but he never let that interfere with his service to the Kandaharis. In 2009, he survived a deadly suicide attack by the Taliban that killed a number of high ranking government officials and members of the Kandahar Provincial Council. Despite this attack and constant threats to his life, the deputy governor continued to serve and dedicated himself to the people of Afghanistan. U.S central command strongly condemns the barbaric attack of the Taliban and pledge to work with Afghan partners to bring those responsible to justice. Such heinous acts of terror committed and then proudly claimed responsibility by Taliban never comes to our surprise, it only adds more to the willingness of Afghan citizens and international communities to redouble their efforts in the fight against terrorism. Did Taliban not claim responsibility for last week’s indiscriminate attack on civilians in Kabul in a market place which claimed several civilian lives including women and children?
