Indian Foreign Minister, Mr. Pranab Mukherjee during his state-visit of Afghanistan on the invitation of his Afghan counterpart, Dr. Spanta, inaugurated the USD $150 million dollar project of Zaranj-Delaram Road which has been completed by the help of Indian Government. The road connects the capital of Nimroz Province with Kandahar-Herat Highway. It will bring revolutionary economic and social development to the people of Nimroz enabling them to have access to other parts of the country through a major Highway of the country. Besides, the road will boast Afghanistan's economic and trade ties with its neighbors. It may be mentioned that Taliban terrorists had killed a driver working on the Zaranj-Delaram Highway in 2005. Many of its engineers were targeted. But the Indian commitment to the development and reconstruction of Afghanistan didn't pause. Zaranj Highway is completed by India's Border Roads Organization.
The highway will link many major cities including Kabul, Mazar, Kandahar, Herat and Kunduz. The Highway was inaugurated jointly by Mr. Mukherjee and President Hamid Karzai, who had recently paid a two-day visit to New Delhi following the state-visit of Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari to Kabul. During President Karzai's visit, Indian Government announced to contribute 250,000 tons wheat to Afghanistan for the acute food shortage which has caused a humanitarian crisis in central parts of the country. Afghanistan needed 150,000 tons of wheat immediately to cope up the food crisis. The Indian contribution will help overcome the acute food shortage. This wheat will be transported from India through Pakistan to Afghanistan. We hope there will be cooperation from our neighbor in this regard. Foreign Minister Rangin Dadfar Spanta while addressing in a reception held in honor of the Mr. Pranab Mukherjee thanked India for the 250,000 tons of wheat and its commitment for reconstruction of Afghanistan. He said "India has been among our most generous and committed friend. India has contributed massively to the processes of stabilization and reconstruction of Afghanistanby allocating nearly 1.5 billion US dollars to date. India's assistance has been comprehensive and inclusive from building our new Parliament, to providing thousands higher education scholarships to providing 250,000 tones of wheat. Afghanistan is immensely grateful and proud of its enduring friendship with India." Beside, Zaranj Highway and many other construction projects, the Power Transmission Line from Pul-e-Khumri to Kabul Transmission Line will soon be completed with the help of India. We hope a friendly neighbor and strategic partner of Afghanistan will continue its commitment to Afghanistan.
