    You tell 'em, Kakargirl !

    Yes that rings true.
The SUPPOSED poll sounded silly [was it even a real poll? I wonder]. I don't remember if they listed the NUMBER of men who were asked.
Sometimes it is shockingly small, like 50 or 100, too.

Even IF they aren't literate, that does NOT make them "primitive".

The tone of condescension is revolting.

These people could never get away with such talk if they described homosexuals as primitive - !
Imagine the trillions of furious phone calls from gay rights groups which would instantly bombard the station.

So they just pick on those whom they feel are powerless to defend themselves with these characterizations.

Notice the hidden message in that one powerful word.
If Afghans in the South are "primitive" - then GUESS WHO is "civilized/advanced"?

Therefore, the logical completion is: Americans must have a Divine Mission to civilize these
    primitive tribes.

It's recycled colonial slogans about the darkened locals and the enlightened Westerners coming to "help them".

I say that it's better for Afghans to NOT know about the rest of the world and assimilate the evil stuff from the West especially.
They should stay with their own ways that have worked for millenia, as those are their
    source of STRENGTH.

Programs like this imply that Afghans are woefully "out of it" and need to be
indoctrinated with Western everything before they will be respectable citizens of the world.

I say: better to keep to one's own self and to stay pure from bad influences.
    That's just I, though.

Others here on PF are sure to emphatically disagree.

colonisers always represent those invaded, to be primitive or less civilised. in australia, they even called australia, terra nullis, uninhabited. the aboriginals were naked but they had an amazing and complicated system already in place about individual tribes land use and borders, rituals for others visiting, religion and a setup to avoid inbreeding of tribes. they virtually, if not actually, came under the same classification as animals. convenient classification 'primitive'.

        VERY INTERESTING, Aseer Jan !

I was starting to wonder if the polls are either sloppily conducted, or more likely,
the results are made up completely !

What you said lends evidence to the latter possibility.

Good, I'm SO glad that's why they won't go.
You said it right: the brutal killing of Pashtuns - that's ALL the NATO forces
        are doing.

They paint all these lovely pictures of a civilizing, stabilizing "mission" to
        Afghanistan.
Only a fool would be taken in by that, especially when confronted with the realities.

You know it would be a revealing study to compare the proportion willing to
grovel by doing these translating jobs under both times.

Also to see whether the Russians had already some language experts with them.
I doubt the Americans planned ahead a lot for that particular angle; though
I know the Monterey Language Institute in California has had a fair amount of
        Pashto courses offered since then.
There can be only one reason for language training in Pashto...
Before the 2001 invasion, I have no idea, though.

I didn't know a thing about Australia, so that's very useful, faye !

I have been studying how the Russian Empire had just the same language
when conquering the Caucasus and Central Asia.

The example of the US and the local Indians here is famous.

How many other places too : the French in Algeria in the early 1800s, the Italians in Libya, etc.

            same old, same old....

going in to save the 'primitives'. i like this one, 'but look what we've done for them, how can they be complaining?'.....stolen their children to be incarerated in homes run by churches, where they were abused, physically psychically, and sexually, brainwashed to be christians and trained to be domestic servants for the whites. had land stolen and then forced or manipulated to work for nix or a bit of flour, blankets and sugar, to help destroy their own land ie; chopping down trees.in some places they were paid with opium and sometimes alcohol. they were forced from the waterholes, which is where they used to camp on their nomadic journeys because these were now for cattle to drink from, not allowed to hunt, not allowed to speak their own language etc, etc, etc.
these people were in australia for more than 40,000 years. in 200 years we (the dominant culture)have poisoned the rivers, chopped down most of the trees, polluted the air and ocean. stolen and profited from that stolen land and virtually destroyed a culture.
            how dare they complain

I had no clue about any of that, thanks --
How did you learn about it?
Did you spend time with these or do research?
Perhaps this is somewhat common knowledge in Australia ?
Good for you to be so sensitive about this terrible injustice.

That's it about the 'how dare they complain' :
              ALL these colonizers whine,
"Why aren't those natives GRATEFUL to us after ALL we have done and
              sacrificed for THEM -?

I'm sure the US is sniveling like this too behind closed doors: "To think those ingrate Afghans have the AUDACITY to resist OUR "superior civilization" and we had to go shed our precious blood for THEIR security, boo hoo hoo "

catya sher, yes i did work with aboriginals, as a carer in an old peoples home in the north, of western australia, where there are mostly aboriginals living. a lot of the people were full blood aboriginal and differ dramatically from mixed blood aboriginals. i loved those old people. their knowledge of land and culture goes, when they die as young ones are westernised. some of the oldest folk at the aged care centres had worked with the cameleers (probably afghans) one old boy, jimmy james, got me to paint a camel on the wall in his room.
i have done a fair bit of research and have close friends who are aboriginals.
